Rush is a legendary Canadian band; a power trio. Lead singer/bass player/keyboard player is a man, Geddy Lee. The guitarist is Alex Lifeson. Geddy and Alex met in junior high and became best friends, and then bandmates in one of the most renowned rock bands ever. Drummer Neil Peart joined them in 1974 and that lineup remained until the band's final tour in 2015. He also wrote their lyrics. Sadly, Neil Peart died of brain cancer in 2020. He was known as one of the premier rock drummers; the whole band was virtuosos on their instruments. I highly suggest checking out some live performances from them. Specifically, check out 'Working Man, Live from Cleveland. Also, I suggest the music video for 'Subdivisions', where you can see how Geddy Lee moves from synth work to bass to singing, something he did often. Rush is a deep rabbit hole, as they had a 40-year career and spanned so many different sounds.

You should also check out Xanadu (live) Exit Stage Left on the StickHits YT channel. It has been remastered and truly shows how versatile they all are. Alex plays a double neck guitar (12 string on top, 6 on bottom) and plays bass pedals with his feet here and there. Geddy plays a double neck (4 string bass on top and 12 string guitar on bottom) along with keyboards and synth plus bass pedals (singing too!) Neil has a massive drum set that is surrounded by every imaginable percussion instrument and he plays all of it. Amazing!

The pirate radio image is a reference to a Pirate Radio station set up on an old Cargo ship in the North Sea in international waters by a group of Disgruntled DJ's who were sick of being told what to play by their stations. Radio Caroline it was called, there have been films made about it!

Neil wrote The Spirit Of Radio as a tribute to local radio station CFNY, which he'd often listen to on his morning commute; the changeups were meant to simulate listening to the radio in 1980, when you could find many different genres of music with just a turn of a dial. Rush is a trio made up of Geddy Lee on Bass, keyboards, and lead vocals, and yes it's a he. Alex Lifeson on Guitar, and Neil Peart(RIP) on Drums, Percussion, and he was the awesome lyricist, writing many of their tremendous hit songs. It's always been mind boggling to me that three guys could make such incredible music that seemed to be from an entire symphony orchestra.

- As a kid of the 60s, we could call the local radio station (WINX 1600 AM) (on a rotary dial, corded phone), request a favorite song, then wait for the DJ to announce your request, along w/ your name - you could even dedicate the song to somebody special :) - Of course, kids of today will be reminiscing nostalgically 60 years from now about something they enjoyed that is no longer a thing. I've never felt as old as I do right now. My first concert was Rush on the Signals tour, March 4 1983 with Golden Earring as the opening act. I'll never forget they opened the show with The Spirit of Radio, it was truly a life changing moment for a 14 year old. You've got a LOT of catching up to do, enjoy the ride!

If you are a reader you could Get a book Geddy Lee wrote last year called "My effing life" a book of memoirs about his personal life, his 40 year career with Rush, and his relationship with his band mates. All starting with his jewish history and parents who are concentration camp holocaust survivors. GEDDY (real name Gary) is currently on tour promoting his book.

I first "discovered" Rush in 1976, and saw them for the first time, in the first rock concert I ever attended in 1977, when I was 15, on their "A Farewell to Kings" tour. I've lost count of the number of times I saw them live, between 20 and 25 times, including their final tour in 2015. Rush concerts were unbelievable, their energy and power, combined with their music, and a healthy dose of three best friends doing what they loved, along with terrific senses of humor, made the concerts amazing events. At the end of the concert, EVERYONE came out exhausted, feeling excited, and amazed at what we saw. Nobody put on a show like Rush, where they left everything on-stage. Though Rush has retired (RIP Neil Peart,) there are many examples of their live performance recordings to enjoy, along with their recorded albums, over their 40 year career.

They’re in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Alex Lifeson is a guitar God, Neal Peart one of the best drummers ever and Geddy Lee (real first name Gary) one of the all time amazing bass players. Geddy also plays keys and is the vocalist. His mom has quite an accent, she’s from Poland and so Gary came out sounding like Geddy. Lee is actually his middle name and his parents are Jewish Holocaust survivors. They were born in Warsaw and later grew up in Wierzbnik. They survived the ghetto in Starachowice (where they met), followed by their imprisonments at Auschwitz and later Dachau and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps during the Holocaust and World War II. They were in their teens when they were initially imprisoned at Auschwitz. After a while his mother was transferred to Bergen-Belsen and his father to Dachau. When the war ended four years later, and the Allies liberated the camps, Morris set out in search of Manya and found her at a Bergen-Belsen displaced persons camp. They married there and eventually emigrated to Canada.

Growing up in the 80's I was a Rocker, saw AC/DC live, as well as Judas Priest, Metalica, AC/DC, Megadeth, Van Halen, ZZ Top, KISS, Pink Floyd, but after about 1995 the ONLY band I ever paid to see live was RUSH. Saw them about a dozen times live. Amazing experience.

John Rutsey was drummer on their first album (which featured "Working Man"), but his diabetes was giving him problems to where he wasn't going to be able to tour, so he resigned. The band quickly found their new drummer and primary lyricist - Neal Peart.

This is not the whole story. While diabetes had a play, John was not interested in going in the direction of progressive music that Geddy & Alex were. They were listening to Yes, Genesis and King Crimson. John was listening to Zep and Bad Company. I think Geddy would site musical differences as the number one reason for John leaving the band.

🤭 Picking a favorite Rush song is like picking your favorite child, 🤗 so instead, I'll pick 3 Rush songs that left a mark on me after being a fan for over 40 yrs & seeing them pretty much every time they played NY/NJ area. 1) Anthem: Played 1st time I saw them when they opened for Kiss 2) La Villa Strangiato: 1st time I 🤯 paid attention to Alex for an entire show 3) Headlong Flight: Performed live by a bunch of old guys who look like my bus driver, but sounded like they did 🤯 when I saw them open for Kiss. This song off their last Album sounded like it would fit perfectly on their 1st and/or 2nd Album. (Special Mention) The Garden: For reminding me Rush could still be pretty as well as gritty. 😍 And Alex Lifeson plays keys Live on this, instead of Geddy Lee. 🥰🐰

For one, the singer Geddy Lee is a guy. Neil Peart is one of the best drummers of all time, Alex Lifeson is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. One of the best rock bands of all time who have made a big influence for many other artists. The singer is also a master class bass player. Must do more rush. My favorite songs by Rush are: 1. This video was planned as part of the fortieth anniversary of the album on which it was the first track. By the time it was made their legendary drummer/lyricist, Neil Peart (pronounced P-ear-T, rather than P-ur-T) had succumbed to the invasive brain cancer, glioblastoma. So, what you've seen here is essentially a biographical look at Neil's career in music (which included a two-year false start in England before he auditioned for Rush and spent the remaining almost-50 years with his musical brothers, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson). Geddy and Alex grew up in suburban Toronto and Neil grew up about an hour's drive to the southwest (not too far from Niagara Falls). Given their talents and technical abilities, this trio was a super-group before super-groups became a real thing. Three songs only? That's impossible, given how Rush published 19 studio albums plus another dozen live albums to boot. In fact, when we include the various compilation albums that came out from time to time (typically to remind fans of older albums), Rush stands 3rd (behind only the Beatles and the Rolling Stones) for most consecutive gold or platinum album releases. Michael, welcome to the amazing band called Rush. The original album just hit 50th anniversary on March 18th. Titled RUSH. The Band formed in Sept. 1968. Michael, I recommend listening to Working Man from this album. It's the first Rush song to be played on the Radio by a female D J in Cleveland Ohio in March of 1974. Donna Halper. Donna is friends with Geddy and Alex to this day. She helped them get a Star on the Walk of Fame. Donna was at the ceremony and did a speech. Donna helped in getting Rush inducted into the Rock in Roll Hall of Fame. I've been a Rush fan for 45 years. Geddy Lee is the Lead singer & Bass player, Keyboard player. music writer. Alex Lifeson & Geddy Lee have been best friends since they were 15 years old. John Rutsey was Rush's original drummer. Rutsey is only on their original album. John left the band in June of 1974. Neil Peart audition for Geddy & Alex and nailed the audition. Top 3 Rush songs. 1. Natural Science 2. Jacob's Ladder 3.Freewill. 4. Anthem 5. The Garden. 6. Between Sun and Moon. 7. Bravado. 8. U need to watch Neil Pearts 9 minute long drum solo live in Frankfurt Germany. He is not only considered the greatest rock drummer of all time by many. He also wrote all the bands lyrics and also know to include at least 9 time changes in every song.

Great, great (!) initial impression!! OMG, spot-on, sir! This song came out in 1980 and I was in High School and I had been a Rush fan since 1977. I. Will. Never. Forget the first time i heard The Spirit of Radio, on my Mom's rinky-dink radio, down in our kitchen! I was waiting for my ride to come pick me up for school and I heard the new Rush song on the radio!! Why was that so significant? Because, before the 1980 album "Permanent Waves", Rush was NOT in much rotation with the radio stations, except for one song -- called "Closer to the Heart" -- which you could catch every now and then, if you were lucky. But, all of the sudden, here is Rush crushing it all over the radio! I could not believe my ears!! I was so fired up that day, that it's something I will never forget! Awesome song, awesome band, awesome musicianship, song-writing, lyric-writing, live show, Bass, Drums, Guitars, Vocals, and Keyboards!!! They are the GOAT!

This came out in 1980. The whole album blew my mind. I had just started drumming the previous year and Neil showed drumming at s different level. Late 79s and early 80’s Rush were at the pinnacle of rock. Geddy Lee said the tried to throw a lot of influences at the wall with this song. Glad you noticed the reggae.

The holy trinity from Toronto are just next level both musically and lyrically, they were the real deal. 😊 Any of Rush's 168 song discography are worth a listen to, Spirit Of The Radio is pretty much standard fare for them, but the essentials for someone new to the band are Xanadu from Exit Stage Left, La Villa Strangiato the official version, Working Man Live in Cleveland, YYZ live in Rio and of course Tom Sawyer. Rush is also known for side long concept pieces like 2112, Cygnus X-1 book ll Hemispheres and The Fountain of Lamneth.

I have been a rush fan since 3rd grade, 1981. My top 3 Rush songs right now are: 1. Red Barchetta 2. Afterimage 3. The Analog Kid (live) To be honest you can do any song from moving Pictures and most songs from Permanent Waves albums, and you will be fine. I like all the songs on both albums, but a couple of PW might not be to everyone's taste.

Rush's career and output spanned from 1974 to 2012 (not counting some live releases). During that time, they constantly experimented with different sounds, styles, and influences. Yet somehow remained true to their core sound, which is....Rush. Alex, Geddy, and Neil are three masters of their craft. Everything you hear them playing on studio recordings they replicated live (Geddy plays bass, keyboards, foot pedals, singing all the while). Welcome to Rush! Three of the most talented musicians you’ve never heard of. Geddy Lee (is a male), vocals, bass guitar and keyboards. Alex Lifeson, guitar shredder, and The Professor, Neil Peart; in the top 5 best drummers of all time (RIP). Check out Tom Sawyer, The Trees and Limelight. Great introductions to Rush. My favorite tunes are probably Witch Hunt, Red Sector A, and Working Man. Though it’s impossible to pick just three!

May i suggest you checking out their live performances. Its crazy that Rush was three musicians but had the musical ability that you would have guessed it was a four or five piece. The singer balanced between bass and keyboards and the drummer wrote almost all their lyrics.

The three of them stayed together and made music for 40 years. They had all different kinds of styles to their songs. "The Spirit of Radio" is probably the one song that could represent them best. It has all the things they're known for: style changes, rhythm changes, quirkiness, thoughtful lyrics, high energy, great singing and playing, and lots of surprises. Must-listen to songs: Tom Sawyer, Working Man from the Live in Cleveland Concert, Limelight, Headlong Flight, and their 20-minute masterpiece: "2112".

Dude, you've been introduced to the greatest rock threesome of all time. Their technical virtuosity, compositional genius, and philosophically deep lyrics (mostly written by drummer, Neil Peart, an innovative master) put them above all other bands of their time . . . that, and their loyalty to each other and their fans explains why their fanbase is so loyal to the band. My suggestion is that you start learning about Rush with "Fly By Night," their '74 album, and work your way forward through "2112," "A Farewell to Kings," "Hemispheres," "Permanent Waves" (from which Spirit of the Radio comes), "Moving Pictures," and "Signals," and continuing from there. They had a 40+ year career together, and were THE band with which I went from youth to adulthood. I hope you'll do more reactions to Rush in the future.

Great reaction!!! Rush is absolutely the best 3-piece band ever (quite frankly top five best band ever). Pure musicianship and artistry in each of them and their instruments along with the pure chemistry between them. Once you watch their early videos (mid 70's to early 80's) and live shows later in their career (2002 to 2015)...you'll really appreciate their style. The got better with age. How lucky you are to go down the Rush rabbit hole for the first time. I feel happy for you! This song does set the bar high, but I can tell you that nearly every other Rush song from the second album on will either meet this level or surpass it.

Best Rush songs? All of them... A passage to Bangkok... Witch hunt... The camera eye. Those three are eye opening and short introductions to the most complex trio in the history of rock. You can get into the 12-20 minute songs later.

Rush songs in this order: - Free will - La Villa Strangiato - Limelight - 2112 [Full album] - Red Barchetta As you probably have been told, Getty Lee is a male singer (and the bassist/keyboardist for Rush) with the most incredible voice. Listen to his voice isolated on tracks if you ever have the opportunity. It’s quite amazing. The drummer, Neil Peart, passed away in 2020 and was regarded as the best drummer in the world. I’m sure you’re getting an earful from many people. Enjoy.

RUSH has a deep catalog of excellence. They did this for 40 plus years. I saw them live in concert on 18 different tours over the decades. RUSH is special. That’s the easiest way to describe them. There are A LOT of really good songs. You’ll see. You will see.

People could buy albums. Mostly records, and cassettes around that time. But you mostly bought a full album usually with about 4 or 5 songs on each side. Also, there is a long list of Rush songs that are great.

Dude. Rush is by far my absolute favorite, and I love that you started with this song. It's not their most mind-blowing song, but it is one of my favorites. Released January 1, 1980. The singer is a dude, Geddy Lee. He also plays bass and keyboards and foot pedals. I love too many songs to have a meaningful top 3, so I'll give you 3 recommendations for what to react to next: La Villa Strangiato (studio version, not a live version), 2112 (this is VERY long), and A Farewell to Kings.

I saw them in October 1974 in the old Hamilton Forum (the Barton Barn); they were warm-up act for Nazareth. So because all the "cool kids" were outside smoking, my friend and I ended up 3 feet from stage centre. Seeing these masters even at the relative start of their time together (drummer Neil Peart joined the other two only at the end of July '74) was mind-searing. They never disappointed and are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...

I was working as a DJ at an album rock station when this album came out. This song quickly became on of my favorites to play. Rush is a band like no other. Their song structure and playing can be very complex, quickly changing style, tempo and riffs from one section to another. They used time signatures that were not used in straight rock songs. Legendary group.

Great reaction to my #1 favorite Rush song! I've always been a fan of drummers, and to me there's never been a more complete drum virtuoso in the last half century of my life than The Professor, Neil Peart. Watching a video of one of his solo drum performances will blow your fricking mind. Guitarist Alex Lifeson is also an amazing guitarist, doing some of the most amazing licks so effortlessly. Rush is amazing. And, yeah, as a kid in the late 70s and a teen in the 80s, the radio was the main source of music since the only way to get music on demand was to buy a 45 rpm single, an album, a cassette, or even an 8-track at the store (I can still tell you the first of each media I bought: 45: CW McCall's Convoy in '76 when I was 8. Album: Queen's The Game in '81. Cassette: Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in '84. CD: Tin Machine's Tin Machine in '88) and as a kid few of us had the money for much of a collection. So the radio was on near constantly as we waited for a great song. When one came on we'd dive over whatever was in our way to turn the volume up (until our parents complained it was too loud and we'd deafen ourselves). I still love listening to the radio for those feelings of elation when one of my favorites would come on. Radio was a constant in our youth for sure, and it was everywhere in the summers especially. 🙂
