A new chapter in the Lindores story was opened on the 15th February 2023 with the first release from the Friar John Cor Cask Strength Congregation Batch, an ongoing limited edition series of whiskies bottled at full strength and featuring a marriage of casks that differ somewhat from the core bottling.
Chapter 1 utilised a blending of ex-Bourbon, STR red wine and Oloroso sherry barrels along with those that had previous held sweet and floral Monbazillac Sherry wines, with a strength of 60.2% ABV.
Chapter 2, launched on 12th July 2023, instead uses ex-Bourbon barrels and STR red wine casks but foregoes the Sherry casks to instead use those dubbed ‘Rum-Peat’ - casks that has initially held heavily peated whiskeis from Islay were then filled with rum, before being used a third time for Lindores spirit to draw out both influences. This is the first time an indiciation of peat in some form has been used in a Lindores release made available to the public, and is bottled at 60.9% ABV.

Brilliant review Ben! I somehow ended up with two Chapter one release for the price of one at an auction (take that you flipper!) and I really enjoyed it! Looking forward to trying the chapter 2 as I love peat and rum influence together in a whisky. Cheers!

Tomatin have a rather nice Monbazillac finish, which does add that hint of sweet fruit, similar to Sauternes. A very different moment to a sherry cask finish.

I'm confused: you were talking about Monbazillac as if it were a type of sherry, but it is a French 'noble rot' dessert white wine very similar to Sauternes (although usually cheaper!). Was the information Lindores sent you misleading or did you just misunderstand? Or did I just not hear you correctly?

A bit of everything! Lindores have talked about it as Sherry previously but I also got myself in a tizz - which is HIGHLY unlike me, I know!
