Two greats from back in the day. Patera was a power lifter and strong man who transformed himself from a bulky weightlifter to the streamlined wrestler as seen in this video. Don Jardine (The Spoiler) was a real bad ass -- great balance and very agile for a guy his size and build. Love watching wrestling matches from the past. Thank you, Rob D!

Instant classic for this Jardine (aka, Spoiler, Super Destroyer) fan. Liked Patera as a heel, also but Super D was my hero as a boy during his brief but very exciting time in Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling back in early - mid '70s.

Yeh, I loved this guy when I was a boy and he was Super Destroyer in old NWA territory known then as Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling in early - mid '70s. In 2004, I tracked him down online and found his web site. We had numerous exchanges between fall '04 and Dec '06, when he passed, not yet 70. The woman you speak of ran his web site and also was the one who informed me of his death. Sad thing is that he invited me up to the small town in Alberta that he lived in but I never made it. Would've been good to meet him ..and her. She had to love him to do that web site for him. It was pretty good. And time keeps moving on with things "I shoulda done."

Danny Hodge, Jack Brisco, Masa Saito, Harley Race, Blackjack Mulligan, Bruiser Brody, Bob Backlund, André The Giant, Billy Robinson, Bob Roop, Wahoo McDaniel, Tim Woods, Bruno Sammartino, Nikolai Volkoff, Tony Atlas, Ernie Ladd etc Don't see Patera beating any of them personally back in the 70's, his best chances would of probably been against Brody, Mulligan and maybe Atlas.

@@kevthegoat8774 if we're talking about a "unscripted" battle with any of the wrestlers you named... who knows ? Regular wrestling contests, Patera was a top star from this period to the mid 80's. All out shoot against any of the men you named would also be determined by one intangible...if Patera grabs anyone with the intention of hurting them... the fight could end quickly for almost anyone ?

I remember him in Carolinas like it was y'day (actually, c.'73-'75). Loved that guy. He claimed on interview maybe close to 20 yrs ago that Crocketts forced him out by leaking identity and claiming he had mask taken off in some backwater like Dillon, SC. Actually tracked Jardine down online in fall '04 and exchanged some e-mail with him til his passing in 12/06. His wife was a Canadian Mountie (RCMP) and she ran his web site. He wasn't even 70.

There's not enough stuff of Don Jardine aka The Spoiler online. Especially during his prime. Legit one of the toughest dudes in wrestling history. Also wrestled as the Super Destroyer in the Mid Atlantic and AWA during the early/mid 1970's (not to be confused with Scott Irwin who started wrestling as Super D in 1979). One of the first wrestlers I got interested in as a kid and still my all time favorite.

I always thought I would really like The Spoilers style but I didn't . He was too slow for me and didn't work his mask gimmick well . You have to master pantomime to wear a mask because you have no facial espessions to sell with .

Man, I must've seen you at the matches. I worshipped Super D, c.'73-'75, in Charleston, SC area. The guy was great. Per shoot interview I heard 15 yrs ago, Crockett's wouldn't agree with him on how to develop Super D's character further and wanted to keep it simple for humanoid fans. As a result of disagreement, per Jardine, Crockett's Pearl Harbored by falsifying claim that he lost his mask while double-teamed by clowns Rufus R Jones and his "cousin" Butthead (kid you not) Jones. I remember it all being announced on Mid-Atlantic one Saturday morning but the film they ran to support it was bad and dark and unclear if it was even Jardine -and wherever it was supposed to have happened. I still remember quote from Jardine to interviewer: "I'd never lose to a no-talent like Rufus Jones." But that scam pretty much ruined his plans in Carolinas. Sad, because as Jardine said, "Super Destroyer angles 'were making nothing but money'." Funny thing is that they brought Jardine and J. Valentine into Mid-Atlantic due to lack of great singles wrestlers... and they run him off. I moved on after that I was so pissed.

I have been a wrestling fan since the mid 1970s. The Spoiler was the first masked wrestler that I knew. I remember back in the mid 70s there was a feud between The Spoiler and Cowboy Bill Watt in the NWA wrestling area. There was a wrestling match between Cowboy Bill Watts and Killer Karl Kox. The Sooiler interfered in that match by jumping off the top rope and applied the the claw hold to Cowboy Bill Watts after Cowboy Bill Watts had put the Oklahoma stampede on Killer Karl Kox. Is there any other wrestling fan that remembers that match?
@SuprJoinT
@SuprJoinT 5 жыл бұрын
Yes that is one of my first memories. Around that same time (1975) is when Ken Patera put the Full Nelson on Bill Watts and made him cough up a lot of blood on TV. Patera was in a group with Kox, Spoiler, etc. It was his first or second year in wrestling. Patera and Spoiler would team with Kox, all the time against Watts & Dick Murdoch, or Buck Robley back then. Used to watch the show Championship Wrestling on WGNO 26 in New Orleans every Saturday at 4pm. Boyd Pierce, Leroy McGurk, and Bill Watts would usually do the commentating. Wish those shows were on tape.
