I always liked the BHP, wanted one for a long time, but while I could spring for $1400+ for a used gun, the $1000-$3000 upgrade and accurize packages wasn't justifiable. But I sprang for this one, and 400 rounds in, I'm very pleased, SA took care of a lot of the big issues.

Unfortunately, Pachmayr isn't making bumper pads for the Browning mags anymore. I have had a BHP since 1987 and bought a pack ofnthr bumper pads and installed them on the bottom of the flush fit BHP mags. So when I got the SA35 with their flush fit magazines, I pulled the base pads and now i have 5 mags with bumper pads. Bumper pads really help eliminate the failure to seat and lock magazines, a feature you can see with every manufacturer making extended base pads for their magazines. The SA35 does not have a firing pin block as in thr Mark III of BHP. The barrels used in the Mark III wwre 2 piece braised barrels. The SA35 uses 1 piece cold forged barrels. Much better improvement.

I remember back in the late 80s I attending an airshow here in Western Canada. There was also a Canadian army recruitment booth displaying the C9 LMG, C7 rifles and the Hi-Power pistols. Here it is 35 years later and the Army is still using them all. Either they're that good, or Canadian equipment procurement is that bad. I think it's a little of both. ;) That said, I loved how the Hi-Power felt in my hands. Great gun for the time - true testament to John Browning's genius. Cheers!

It's honestly amazing the hi powers in current CAF service work at all, due to all of them being of vintage WW2 era manufacture. There isn't to many 80 to 90 year old guns that still work mostly reliably after bring used and abused for that length of time.

I think the Canadian military spent too much time and money on a study or studies on what firearm to procure to replace thd Hi-Power. Well, since the SA-35 is already here, why won't the Canadian military continue using this platform? The most important difference is the elimination of a magazine safety on the SA-35.
@burnyburnoutze2nd
@burnyburnoutze2nd 2 жыл бұрын
@@rexhinlo3398 it's a combination of a few things: 1. The Canadian forces wants something more modern than a pre WW2 era designed, single action, hammer fired, steel framed handgun with zero provisions for attachments. Times have changed, and it's time to go with a more modern handgun. 2. The hi powers in current service are geriatric and ancient by service gun standards; we've been using them longer than America used the M1911A1s after WW2. 3. Browning no longer makes the hi power. The ones in service were all manufactured during WW2 by the John Inglis company, which no longer exists. And even if we did opt to just simply buy more hi powers, there would be parts compatability problems; since the ones we use are all first generation hi powers, while all the commercial ones are mostly mark 2 and 3s, it would become a logistical nightmare to keep both sets of hi powers maintained, as their parts are not 100% interchangeable.

I’ve always liked the High Power. I carried one in place of the M9 in Desert Storm, an original Browning. I liked the M9 a bit more than a Raven, and given the unit that I was in my team sergeant said that I was free to carry it if I wanted as long as I had the M9 stuffed away somewhere that wasn’t too far out of the way. I’m glad to see that someone is making a nicely updated version.

I was very excited about this pistol when it was announced and couldn’t wait to get my hands on one. It took a while but finally one came into my local gun shop. One day I happen to be at my local gun shop and they told me they had gotten the S 35 but couldn’t sell it to me. It was very disappointing to see how scratched up it was. They told me that when they unsealed the package and opened the box they couldn’t believe the scratches on it. So, they sent it back to Springfield Armory. Couple weeks later they received another one. The second one was equally as scratched as the first one. Scratches were in different places so they did not send the same one back. This second sample was returned as well. A few more weeks after that a third sample came in and this third sample had the front sight shoved into the dovetail at an angle so the corner was sticking out of the canal. This third sample was returned to Springfield as well. My enthusiasm for buying one and testing it has diminished dramatically. Thank you very much for your video.

I just fired mine (low 4,000's S/N), and used a couple of ProMag 15 rd mags in addition to the factory (MecGar) mag. I had some FTF issues - even with the factory mag. The FTF happened near the end of the mags - that is, it fired about 12 or so rounds without problem, and then the slide would lock to the rear like the magazine was empty. However, when looking into the open chamber, there would be one or two remaining rounds. Removed the magazine, reinserted it and then let the slide go fwd again and fired the remaining rounds without problems. I only fired about 200 rounds, and I can't recall going through an entire magazine (15 rds) without it happening. Otherwise no problems - no FTE (as mentioned in many KZbin videos). I have some MecGar mags on order (13 rds) - seems BHP magazines are hard to find. Thanks, for the great video.

I picked up a Hungarian PJK-9HP back in the 1980s for two hundred bucks. It is still my favorite pistol. My complaints are sights that are mostly invisible to guys my age and a rough, gritty, tiny safety. The trigger pull is nasty but the HiPowers are known for that. Mine is extremely accurate. It has the rounded hammer. The machining inside is kind of rough, but it is just fine on the outside. I would sooo love to get an SA-35, but I doubt this will ever be sold in California with our wretched laws. Great video, thanks for sharing!

One of the guns I regret selling the most was my Belgian made Browning Hi-Power I purchased brand new in 2005. It had beautiful bluing and wood grips. I later went to college, was broke, and needed the money, so I sold it regrettably. I can't remember how, but I removed the magazine cutoff feature from the pistol, and the "mousetrap" springs from the magazines and that made it a lot nicer to shoot.

I have had two of these. In both cases, the guns had serious failure to extract problems. In the first gun, it could simply not be made to run reliably, and the second gun was a warranty replacment.. The second gun was made to work, but... Well, I'll get to that in a minute. The cause of this, as I learned from my gunsmith, in both my SA-35s, the cam pin was located a few thousands of an inch out of where it was supposed to be, and this was causing the gun to unlock too early, while chamber pressures are still too high, and the extractor claw simply couldn't hang into the rim of the cartridge. The second gun was sent back to Springfield Armory, and it came back working, and I thought the problem was fixed, so I sent it off to my gunsmith to have the frame stippled and a gold bead front sight installed. He decided to check and see what Springfield had done with the extractor, and I'm glad he did, because he discovered a solid steel pin had been inserted into the center of the extractor spring. This pin was limiting the travel of the extractor, basically "locking" it in place, in order to prevent it slipping off the rim of a cartridge. This didn't fix the issue; it put a band aid on it. The underlying issue -- that the barrel was unlocking from the slide early, while chamber pressures were still too high -- remained unresolved. Springfield had just found a way to force the extractor to stay on the cartridge rim. This worked, but it meant the extractor, and the roll pin holding into the slide, were now taking a lot more stress than they were ever designed to take, trying to pull a cartridge case out, while high pressure was pushing the brass of the cartridge case tightly against the walls of the chamber. He was worried this was eventually going to cause the extractor to break, or the roll pin to fail. I will try buying another SA-35 a few years down the road. Springfield Armory has been getting a lot of returns for this failure to extract issue, and hopefully they can improve their QC, and get that cam pin in the frame located correctly. Other than that, the ones I had were great pistols, with an outstanding factory trigger, and great accuracy.

I have one on the serial range of 5500. It’s still has all the issues that the early ones did. The ejector fails to grab empty cases incredibly frequently, and the hammer is off center and is repeatedly hitting the right side of the frame resulting in metal peeling from the hammer. Mine also had a bunch of bluing salt crud around the front of the slide.

Years ago I had an old German occupation high power and I also had a newer FN that I carried on duty for a while in the early 90s. High powers are pretty nice but they do have their quirks. Saying that this pistol made the 1911 obsolete is a bit of a stretch. They’re different. Designed for different calibers. I prefer the 1911 because the of trigger. I have both single and double stacked 1911s so capacity is irrelevant.

Besides the fact that this weapon should be blued, it is a great pistol from the nostalgic reasons and standpoint. I'm sure it shoots like a dream and still very formidable. But in this day and age of pistols that average 18 + rounds in the magazine on a probably 25% lighter it's kind of a foregone time as utilitarian practicality goes. I tested about 50 rounds of reloaded ammunition, it worked perfectly, but the accuracy disappointed me. I'll test it later with it supported. My biggest practice is with strike-fire pistols. Suddenly I'm the one who's wavering, but my fear is that the finish on the barrel crown isn't perfect (just a suspicion).

Is the firing pin not titanium? Dan Wesson and other 1911 makers tend to use titanium firing pins with stiff fp spring to pass drop safe test without a mechanical fp safety (e.g. Shwarz or Colt S80 style). The super lightweight fp doesn't have enough mass to overcome spring in a 5' drop. I have two BHPs 40S&W I bought ~2003. Both were modified for modern concealed carry. I just recently had one fitted with a 357 Sig barrel. SA-35 looks great.

Good video overall, but I always chuckle at the ridiculous statement when someone says that the hi power made the 1911 obsolete. A lot of U.S. soldiers were carrying that “obsolete” handguns in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and even some units still today with fantastic success. Both the 1911 and the hi power are great guns and designs. That’s why both are still being produced today (1911 design more widely than the hi power). To say that the 1911 was obsolete when the hi power was introduced in the 1930s is simply not accurate.

If you can get a Browning factory ambi safety it will fit. I swapped my ambi safety from my Browning HP to thr SA35, but it wqs a bit stiff. The factory ambi safety is round with serrations so trying to work it on and off abridged thr skin off my thumb. I swapped it back to thr SA35 factory safety with a shelf/gas pedal design and not just a rounded half cylinder with serrations. Or order an ambi from Cylinder and Slide.

It took forever for me to get one, but I got it this week. Hopefully the extraction issues are fixed on mine, but I don't even care. It's a classy looking gun, and I need a classy leather holster for it. Got it on sportsman's for MSRP (definitely better than what they go for on other sites).

Sportsmens were completely out. I also shop at a local chain hardware store that carried fishing clothing, boots, and guns. I placed my name on a call list and about a year later I got the call. $50 below MSRP. I had shot maybe 100 rounds with oth any issues. My serial number is in the 25,XXX range so I think they got the bugs out. The early runs in 300s-600s range serial number had some problems. All parts interchange except the sights. I swapped the safeties from my BHP to thr SA35, tried it out. Didn't like it. Swapped it back. I did swap the sear and hammer from thr BHP to the SA35 as the original sear and hammer were tuned up by Terry Tussey Gunsmithing. Zero creep while the SA 35 trigger had a good bit of creep. But the tuned trigger wqs spot on BANG. Just a tiny bit heavy.

I've never owned a Hi-Power and was really excited to pick one up. However last year, when I tried to order one, dealers either marked them up, or fiends bid them up to $1200 on Gunbroker. So, I looked at alternatives, and picked up a CZ Shadow 2 for the same price. Think about that... A Hi-Power clone or a Shadow 2... For the same price.

The weak point of the orginal design was the feed ramp. It was designed for FMJ not HP. I bought a brand new Browning in early/mid 80's. Despite polishing and slight modding the ramp remained unreliable for HP ammo. I was disappointed after all the money dumped into improving the trigger and sights. I really like its slim profile and ergonomics and overall cool factor. Ended up trading it to someone who wasn't concerned about good defensive ammo. I was hoping for a closeup shot of the ramp to see if it was re-designed. It kind of looks different than the older Browning HP ramp. But I'm not jumping back on that wagon.

A pistolsmith in San Antonio modded two BHPs of mine for carry in 2005: modern sights, magazine disconnect *hazard* deleted, replaced hammer, new safety, smoothed trigger, etc. feeds JHPs no problem. He did work on ramp, but they were also 40S&W to start with, so maybe the 40 bbls were good for HPs from day one.
@ms.annthrope415

If you have the straight feed ramp, it will feed hollowppints. However, there are two sharp corners from the frame supports on each side of the feed ramp that will catch the hollowpoint. On my Browning, I used a Dremel tool with a small grinding stone to polished the sharp corners away. Thr SA 35 also polished the sharp corners away from the factory. The old hump barrel ramp is FMJ only.
@LuvBorderCollies

Once you take up the trigger the trigger pull is crisp on properly fitted guns. You can polish the trigger safety that rides on the mag body. Can also polish that portion of the mag and add a touch of oil if it bothers you that much. Designed as a military pistol they didn’t want troops shooting someone or themselves in the knee or? The way to carry these is cocked and locked or you could fumble and be too slow. Nice to see someone making these other than Turkish. I don’t send my $ to nefarious actors.
