The Spyderco Resilience is another entry in Spyderco's lineup of budget pocketknives. It's, put simply, fine. It's not a great knife, not a great value, and doesn't stack up so well against the competition, but it's fine. So, if it's what you can get, that's fine. But if you've got choices, you're probably better off using them.

I love this knife for one thing... Food prep. I single handedly saved a 10 person camping trip with this knife, because every knife someone brought was butter knife dull. I keep a stupid sharp mirror edge on there, and sliced meats and veggies for 4 days straight on a wooden cutting board. At the end of this trip, the edge was (barely) duller than when it started, still easily shaved. I believe that spyderco Nails Their heat treat for 8cr compared to CRKT and Kershaw. I’m in a college dorm room, so slicing fruits and other snacks on a daily basis is normal. I have other super steel knifes but this thing still gets the most use.

Nico Albrektsen The flat grind is perfect for that sorta thing. The blade width between the edge and the spine also allows for a thinner flat grind. The only reason I don't like Spydercos is because they are clunky and knuckley when they're closed.

This knife for me is almost perfect .. The large flat ground blade is great for self defense or at the campsite .. I’ve prepped many a meal with this knife .. Pretty good for whittling as well .. I prefer larger knives .. I also like the fact that it doesn’t have a choil .. The price is great and really hasn’t gone up much .. Other Spydercos are skyrocketing .. The one thing I dislike about this knife is the blade steel .. I’d pay $10 bucks more for a quality knife steel .. D-2 is a pretty darn good steel and is relatively cheap .. It’s reasonably lightweight and is built very well .. You have your tastes and I have mine and I like this knife so much so I bought an additional one .. My two favorite brands are Spyderco and Benchmade .. Both are going up in price very fast due to inflation ..

I have shamans, manixes, nearly every seki city model in k390, ti frame locks, crucarta this and that, all sorts of expensive stuff…but I also have this knife and like it. This lives in the same category as my BD1N para 3…it’s a less expensive knife that I’m “not afraid to use”. It’s like someone crash landed a military into an endura for $50. Is 8cr great? No, but I don’t care…freehand sharpening is one of my favorite pastimes so I don’t always need a steel that holds its edge for an eternity. It’s good to have one or two beaters around and this knife is a heavy duty beater that won’t fall apart on you…or *shouldn’t* at least.

i like the black light version of this. looks like a very good overall knife. owning the serrated black light Tenacious too. its not that cheap in Europe, all prices for knifes are double here. i chose it over Yojumbo or CS Spartan because is less bulky and the handle is shorter. edit: i love Spyderco 8cr13mov, its very easy to sharpen, like the Victorinox. D2 is a pain compared to this.

One thing this knife was great for was learning how to sharpen. That's a lot of blade for practice, and you can lose some steel and still have a useful knife for camping food prep.
@jayweast1306
@jayweast1306 6 жыл бұрын
8cr13mov is a great steel for that. It can be found on cheap knives, takes a great edge, and sharpens quickly. I first tried using really cheap (under $5) knives with mystery metal when learning to sharpen and had a lot of trouble simply because they wouldn't take a good edge no matter what I did. Super steels are impractical for beginners because they take far too long to sharpen.

This is the second spyderco I ever bought .1st was a tenacious. Since getting it i'v purchased 50 more knives but I can't help carrying this one over most others even with better steels. I keep trying others but the action on mine is amazing the size ended up being my favorite thing about it. With the zip tie mod opening it out of my pocket it's awesome .I do admite though in public I grab my second knife so I don't scare people. I'm about to try the endura because I can't find any other big blades with this kinda flat grind.

Nick, this knife fills a very specific niche. Big, beefy folder, that actually cuts thing, on a budget. Find me one other knife that does that better and I will applaud you. As a 4+ inch knife there are almost no practical cutting folders out there, especially at a low-ish price point. The resilience makes for an excellent pocket camp tool. Not so delicate that is won’t handle reasonable camp chore, and it will cut food really well. Because of this, this ends up being the single knife that I carry most. Would I want a better steel? Of course. Did I add a sharpening choil? Sure did. Would I change anything else about the knife? Hell no! Think of this knife as a folding Temperance 2; a folding outdoors field knife. It makes allot more sense framed that way.
@Ryomichi
@Ryomichi 6 жыл бұрын
If you watch his video long enough, he is reviewing for himself, which applies to most people who live in a city and want to bring a knife every day. But you are absolutely right about it being the best cheap 4+ inch knife. Did a filter search in BladeHQ and it is the best slicer.
@macmurfy2jka
@macmurfy2jka 6 жыл бұрын
+Ryomichi the funny thing is, I end using this knife in the city as much as anyone of my other knives. The tall ffg blade really lends itself well to food prep. No apple or orange is too big for the Resilience to cut. The washer bearing and open pillar construction is super easy to clean and maintain. Like any good outdoors field knife, it’s beautifully multifunctional. If I could own only one knife for the rest of my life, this one in a better steel might just be that choice.

Nick, Thanks for the thorough reviews. I am a huge fan and you are a go-to for me. Most of the time, I think your reviews speak to my own mind. You find all the little good and bad things that either delight or disappoint you. I am a very detail-oriented person so very much like this type of commentary. My only pushback is on this particular knife as it has proven to be the best cardboard destroyer I have ever owned. I have conducted paper and cardboard tests and it beats all of my expensive knives hands-down. The steel is certainly nothing special, and the shape of the blade is very Spyderco, but the long flat grind and the total cutting surface area are its superpowers. I love a cheap alternative that really performs and this one does not disappoint. This is the case here. The steel takes and keeps an edge in everyday use that is impressive and not at all what I expected. The bad: The blade is long and not particularly fidgety so not really an EDC for most. I find it a little harder to spydyflick due to the blade length. It is large, and a bit unwieldy but it has good balance and outperforms every knife in my considerable collection when it comes to slicing and breaking down Amazon boxes. Wow...this is an example of where beauty, materials, and price does not always tell the whole story. At about 50 bucks it is a great knife if you don't mind the larger form factor.

Hey Nick, you have been addressing the issue with part of the blade that is not usable due to finger guard 8:10 . That applies to most folding knife with the way you hold it. Just by changing the grip to pinch grip would solve the issue. But then, who EDC cutting board?

I could probably close the delica in my hand and not see it...open. That being said....for Pete’s sake... learn how to sharpen your blades. This is a medium knife for those larger guys....just got the TATANKA ...finally a knife that fits me. The steel of ANY KNIFE OF TODAY....far surpasses those of yesterday...how long do you want to spend at the sharpener? 8cr fits the bill of every possibility. Perfect? Not by far!! Just picked one of these big guys up on clearance for $25 (if you're reading this in August 2019, check your local walmart). I always balked at the $50+ price point, but absolutely couldn't beat it at $25. I have to say, after having it in hand (and in pocket) I disagree with some of your points here. The weight feels very reasonable to me. It's lighter than the Ontario Rat by a fair margin and it feels light in hand because it's so well balanced. After having it in the pocket, it doesn't seem to carry any worse than the PM2 does (which has been my daily carry for a while). Most of the size difference is in length, so it doesn't really effect me in terms of getting my hand past it to get to the other stuff in my pocket. In fact, it seems to hold everything in place a little better because it runs all the way down the side of the pocket and nothing can get caught under it. In short, I think I actually like it a little more in pocket than the PM2. Sure, it's a huge blade, but the people who would be interested in this knife don't see that as a bad thing. I bought it because I've been wanting a token huge knife for a while. After having it in hand (the ergonomics really are great) and in pocket, I might actually end up carrying it more than I expected I would. I agree on your other negatives. 8cr13mov is a pretty mediocre steel and the price was too high relative to the competition. I just cannot imagine a scenario in which I would pay $50 for an 8cr13mov blade. This would be a great knife at $35-40 and at the $25 I paid, it's a world-beater.

......unless you're. Cutting into cheese or something, you're gonna be alright.... When I first got this knife, blade....not absurdly large, I did think the blade was wider than it needed to be. 2 years of EDC with this Spyderco Resilience...9 out of 10. Clip sometimes comes a little loose, maybe a drop of loctite. And the blade is a bit wide, a more angular blade shape like the military would be great. THIS KNIFE HAS NEVER FAILED TO OPEN. It's solid.

PS, I own 12 Spyderco knives and counting. Some were very expensive and I really love them. However, only one can hold its own against this big slicer and that is the WATU that thing is a lethal weapon.

Hi Nick, you left out my one big beef with this entire series, and unfortunately it falls under the Ugly category. It's the way that the thumb interfaces with the lock and in turn its interaction with the edge. If one is not careful the edge will want to enter the thumb... Some years back I bought one and promptly opened my thumb up. After looking around a bit I noticed that a large majority of the instances of people getting themselves stitches after being cut by their Spyderco knives, involved this series of blades. Almost every other knife in the Spyderco line up are free of this problem, luckily.

For a large handed person...ahem!! This knife rocks!! Great useful working knife thats easy to touch up. I use this when i dont want to possibly damage my military. Just try to imagine having big hands and it will make sense. More than saying pay $10 dollars for a delica, thats a baby to anyone needing this knife

A different perspective - as articulated by others. 1. every knife is a compromise. 2. unless you want to carry a fixed blade, this is a fine cutter as a camp knife. If you want a low end, quality camp knife, that is fixed blade, it would be the Ontario Old Hickory butcher knife within a $12 Mexican made, leather, ka-bar sheath and it is under $30 out the door. 3. people steal! if you want to carry the Spyderco Police model (I have 3), you will cry when it is stolen from the car, taken from you on a traffic stop and lost forever at the police station. This knife is as large. For that reason, my edc is a first generation Spyderco Endura with no clip. I would miss it, but not cry. 4. if you want a defensive blade, spend the money on skills training first before spending money for top of the line tools. I had the training in folder, khukuri, escrima, entrenching tool, etc. You do not get skills by just buying a knife. 5. don't be hypercritical about making choices. most people do not regularly clean their knives, know how to sharpen them, will never wear them out unless misusing them. if you want bragging rights, go ahead and spend big bucks. 6. really consider the application. i am anonymous. I don't carry a knife on a pocket clip -"LOOK HE HAS A KNIFE." I only open packages before shtf. If shtf while I am in the car, there are other tools available.

"....That doesn't even make sense" was just perfect. Good review of mediocrity. I enjoyed this tremendously, and found the quick moment about blade shape vs length (how much of the length is unusable except on something unsupported) a very good insight indeed.

bp69 Yes, was referring to the LAPG. I get that it's not a great knife, but my point was that the steel and milling can't cost more than $20 or so for the blade it they're selling that knife for $35. There's no reason to settle for crappy steel. There are dozens of knives available with good steel under $70 (S30, XHP, CPM-154, ect.) and hundreds of them for under $100.

Hello Nick from New Jersey. Bob here a ex USNavy vet with a question sir. I’m looking to upgrade my carry knife from a elderly Gerber, silver knife, Japan, two blade to either a Rat2, D2 or a Keyshawn divadvan (spelling), sucks. Is there a online store that will sell either already checked over before shipping? I don’t have the tools or resource to fix them out of the box new. Sucks being almost 80. Any help will be appreciated.

Robert Ellis The Kershaw Dividend is great, House of Blades, KnifeCenter, or BladeHQ will all have it. Maybe the Rat 2 as well, I’m not sure. I just bought a Dividend at House of Blades, with an upgraded steel (S35VN) for $87, and I am loving it.

rrp925 thanks for your nice reply. When in the Navy, to many years ago, I carried a big ole Buck in a leather case on my belt. Lost it in Hong Kong, fell in the water. Bought another from the ships store used it for years. To big if I remember. By looking at these reviews I like three. The Keyshawn dividend, the Rat 2 in D2, an the Steel Will 3” cutback. All came in at around $40.00, but can only afford one. So I appreciate any input. Fixed income an all that. Once again thanks..........

Robert Ellis Wow, yeah, those are all three good choices. Maybe for ease of opening the Kershaw Dividend is your best choice. The Rat 2 has a thumb stud which isn’t to hard to open the knife with, but requires more dexterity. The Cutjack is a manual flipper, and can take some getting used to, but it is a great knife. My opinion is the Kershaw Dividend’s assisted flipper is the easiest knife to manipulate, but everyone is a little different! Best of luck ;)

rrp925 Hello again, nice reply. Now to find a place with good rating. I’m going to a local Army/Navy store later today an check out my “ luck”. Hard to pick one but me thinks your kind of right. Where do you live? Do you collect or use. I plan on carrying as I can only talk my wife into one, an have carried almost since I left the Navy. Nice chatting with you.

I have heard legends that NJ was once part of America.....you can't carry that size knife here. In fact if you look up the law, you can't carry any knife unless it is for work purposes only. But you can carry copies of that law to hand to an attacker.....that's legal.
@macmurfy2jka
@macmurfy2jka 6 жыл бұрын
Reasonable use as it’s mentioned in the law allows for one to carry any knife that they feel fits the bill for the day. The problem is that the police officer is given disgresion to decide weather or not you were actually going to use the knife for that purpose. So depending on the officer a knife like this is totally reasonable, or no knife is ever reasonable. This leaves the law as something that the police are able to abuse by hitting others with if for personal gains...unconditionally vague. That being said, knives make for messy legal battles when they are used for self defense. Better to use a less lethal or more lethal option. They are just too grey area. This is the same in NJ as it is anywhere else. Don’t buy into the hype.
