I ride horses for a living. The sport career of a horse is normally over by the time they are around 17 or 18 years old, but ponies (who belong to the same species) can last a lot longer. Up to 25 years or even more. That’s because their legs don’t have to support the continuous impact of the heavy mass that the horses have. Ponies are smaller, weight less and even with smaller and weaker legs the weight distribution that they support is much smaller so they don’t have injuries as often as horses do
