Netflix would pretty much buy every script that has been tossed for many years from studios to studios. Basically like Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro developing The Irishman, it took them decades to get the movie made cuz no studio is interested in working with them anymore which is honestly ridiculous but thank goodness Netflix was willing enough to take risk and show that the script that have been tossed for many years could finally be executed properly

I think Ali's character was one of the best, a sacrificial lamb character, innocent and pure hearted who gets betrayed in the worst way possible. Also like the immigrant in new country expecting kindness and all dreams to come true, just then to find that things are just as bad as where he has left before. Ali's betrayal scene was heart wrenching and shocking, like the innocent of child destroyed.

Just adding as a Korean, the title of the last episode; A Lucky Day is a homage to a famous Korean novel "A Lucky Day" by Hyun JinGeon. In the novel the protagonist, a rickshaw driver, happens to get unusually more customers than usual leading him to work until very late. On his way home, he remembers his sick wife's wish to eat Seollung-tang (bone-marrow soup). Hence, he picks-up a bowl of Seollung-tang only to find his wife had passed away

Yeah set is like unbelievable. I like how it all- the costume, set, and atmosphere everything suggested that the games were kid games and weren't like some heavy games, but also suggested that it was all a maze which you can't escape and which gives an eerie vibe. It's difficult tho think such things. The whole series filled with symbolization. The rides in park, so big, which showed how a small kid will feel coming to the park. The doll, looking so sweet and not deadly just how kids play with but is deadly.

"Sang-woo thinks he came all the way here because he worked for it and because he's smart. Gi-un thinks the opposite, that it was the others who helped him cross the bridge. I think the difference in beliefs is what makes this show stand out from other survival game shows."

@@banewade9579 I wouldn't say "big" but memorable enough. The ones I personally know would be: The Running Man and The Long Mile (first one an actual movie, second one a book, both by Richard Bachmann AKA Stephen King), The Hunger Games and Japan's Battle Royale. I think there's a few more for sure. And if you want to scrap the bottom of the barrel, there are ancient traditions of survival games in history, like the Aztec's Flower Wars and the Calcio Storico (which is one of the origins of modern day soccer). IMHO every time a society starts to face excessive income differences or class conflict, a survival game narrative will inevitably rise.

They picked the perfect actor for Gi-hun, his expressions are so sweet and child-like, he could have been a very unlikeable character, but it was impossible not to sympathize with him. i do think he is very unlikeable though. but i'm of the opinion that just because he's the main character, doesn't mean he's the "best" character. he's clearly a flawed protagonist and his faults are honestly never resolved. but i think it's okay for movies/tv to do that sometimes, have imperfect characters. makes it feel more real. i was really expecting him to sacrifice himself for sae byeok at some point though, her death seemed the laziest to me, so random.
@SinSinny
@SinSinny 2 жыл бұрын
@@dyl_out I honestly think his only flaw was that he’s a good person for all the wrong reasons. His motives for going back in the game at first are understandable but it’s his character wanting to stop the game forcing him to go back in the end that was horrible. I wish he had chose his daughter. His daughter is another example of his heart being in the wrong place. All he had to do was buy her chicken, instead he felt the need to gamble regardless of the risk because he wanted to give her something more when that’s not important. To me when they show first starts you think he’s a low life leech but as the episodes pass I realized he’s actually a genuine dude, his priorities are just out of wack because he’s focused on things that don’t and shouldn’t matter. Also he couldn’t have sacrificed himself for her, she knew she wasn’t going to make it and was already weak from her injury. Sang-woo would’ve killed her in the final game anyway (if he hadn’t killed her overnight) so his sacrifice would’ve been for nothing.
@RA-fw5yc
@RA-fw5yc 2 жыл бұрын
@@SinSinny I think he has tremendous guilt and big time pstd where he won’t be able to be fully present with her daughter, knowing that he has the opportunity to right the wrong and stop the game altogether, so he could be free from his guilt in a way. He probably thought, “oh my daughter is in good hands, but I cannot let this game go on”. To be fair, the second season would start a lot better if he’s involved because of his experience. After all, he’s our eyes and we don’t want a newbie to be our eyes in the second season when we already know how the game works.

The final shot of the last episode is one continuous scene that lasts for nearly 5 minutes, and I can't help but feel that every single second was so deliberate and so flawlessly executed. What a fantastic show.

Agree! He got so complex feeling because he is the smartest. He realized much quicker and deeper than Gi-hun that he will eventually kill everyone else when he chose to re-join the game. He tried so hard to restrain from his emotions and feelings. That's why Ali's death broke him the most as Ali is the perfect angelic figure that is everything opposite to him. It's like, even though Ali, who is not smart and with lowest social status, chose to be hardworking and kind. That earns Sang-woo's respect and envy while he tried to cut off human feelings. Eventually Sang-woo killed him and condemned himself as the definite evil in his mind.

Isn't it the *exact* opposite way, though? The stray cat scene is actually incredibly effective to Gihun's personality and his relationship with money. He wastes money and goods at gambling. He has to beg people for money. You hate him for it. But when he does get a bit of money or something precious he flaunts it a bit or gives it away (i.e. the cat, the money tender girl) it gives him a sense that he wants to be a good and helpful person. And the best way he can think of is using money he doesn't even have.

I think the most realistic character in squid game are Sangwoo, Ali and Gihun. Sangwoo represent people who is smart but still can fail in life. Ali is that person who is always willing to help and kind but people around him will use that kindness to backstab him just like how people said that in this cruel world we dont need to be too kind coz people will take advantage of us. Lastly, Gihun represent a person who isnt perfect and street smart but despite his imperfection as a human, a son or as a father, he still had humanity in him and you see how his character develops per episode same as the other characters as well. Btw after watching SG, i watch Gihun's movie 'Deliver us from evil' and im shookttttttttt

Same. I, also, am surprised that the coffee picking scene was ad-libbed. I initially thought that this scene well potrays that even if Gihun was in the most difficult circumstances, he never forgets to help a person. That is what he did until the end. He was going to sacrifice the whole money for a person who tried to kill him and also even after he did what not to reach till that stage. I thought this coffee scene is a lot expressing 😂 But I can see why didn't the makers retake that scene and kept the ad-lipped one

I dont see anyone talking about this but I think sangwoo’s character was actually the most realistic for the plot of the story. The years of failure he’s had regarding money is the main driving factor in him wanting to win the game. He wants to be successful for once in the gamble he’s made in his life. He does everything to win that money, but in the end he couldn’t kill gi-hun because he came from a time before all sangwoos money failures began.

Whenever you have a death game show, you always have a few edgy people in the comments section saying "will if *I* was in the games, I wouldn't hesitate to sacrifice anything or anyone to win." Song-woo is *exactly* this kind of character, and not only that, but we see his character develop into the series' surprise villain. As a financial analyst, Song-woo only cares about the money. Over the course of the games the prize money becomes his obsession and he sees the other players as nothing more than statistics. In his mind he's just doing whatever he needs to win, but from our perspective as viewers we see how monstrous he becomes. It starts with him wanting an all-male team for tug of war, which isn't necessarily a bad idea, and ends with him killing Ali, the glass manufacturer and the North Korean girl in cold blood to get closer to the prize money.. And in the final game we see where this mindset gets him. He could have chosen to end the game with Gi-hun. He could have gone home with his old friend, seen his mother, and tried to pay off his debt. But he only sees the money, so instead he chooses to sacrifice himself to force Gi-hun to take it.

This is what Martin Scorsese meant when he said the trend of action, superhero movies is taking away from a cinematic experience, not dissing it but simply stating that the art of making a story has turned into a spread sheet of how many movies can we utilize this same formula with until the next phase? Squid Games as a series, takes care of itself. These actors are well informed of their characters and story, and they worked close with the art director to make sure things were rightfully executed, where Marvel actors are entitled to portions of a script and left clueless as to what may happen next. The tiniest things to even having a fraction of an outtake make it in a movie, it's refreshing to finally have an original story that takes you in many waves of emotion.
@jackriver1999

id ever go so far as to say the thing that overarches all of those is the simple fact that those funding and watching the games are ultimately the ones forcing them to choose between these things. those rich people could have easily helped them but instead, they funded a ridiculously expensive game on a private island where they turned the poor against each other and looked down on all of them laughing and betting the whole time. it’s just a more graphic representation of what already happened everyday i think it’s important to remember that the moral burden shouldn’t have been on the players, but the gamemakers themselves

It would have been also an immersive commentary session with the actors and directors in it.

Frankly speaking, everyone should have been there. Even the guy who played the game on the metro platform, the actor did an excellent job.

@@zubleo8590 It would've been a good discussion though.. I guess the background score isn't that important to them and only the production set.. the emphasis it's placed is more on the set pieces. The music is good too.

@@user-yc5fr8zu1m I think their real life is just as hell as in the game. They could never make the amount of money that would really change their life for the better. They will work tirelessly until the rest of their life and still struggling to survive on their own, not to mention their families. It’s an illusion that the poor being poor because they chose to, they die because they chose to, when in fact they never really have a choice.

It's pretty cool hearing about how Lee Jung-jae is a big shot in Korea. It's neat how he seems to talk differently than the others

Lee Jung-jae is definitely big. “The Thieves” (2012) was the second all-time highest grossing movie in Korean cinema history. A classic I love to rewatch even to this day. It’s pretty much America’s “Now You See Me” (2013). He also has “City of the Rising Sun” (1999), “Assassination” (2015) and “Deliver Us From Evil” (2020) under his belt where he won multiple best actor awards. He’s also a well-respected public figure that you see Yoo Jaeseok (South Korea’s nation’s mc) mentioning him from time to time.
