With nearly one billion eligible voters, India is the world’s biggest democracy. Beginning April 19, with voting staggered over six weeks, they will decide their leader for the next five years. Narendra Modi aims to consolidate power with his third term as prime minister, as a coalition opposition looks to unseat him.
Sanjay Ruparelia is an associate professor at Toronto Metropolitan University and Jarislowsky Democracy Chair explains why India’s elections matter for democracy - and the balance of power for the rest of the world.

Why should India take Muslims in Pakistan who openly call for its conquest back into it’s borders? It is a huge existential risk. Secondly, why would India want to re-litigate the partition? The Muslim who live in these countries did not want to live with Non Muslims anyway. The non-Muslims in the same country are citizens we left behind due to the chaos of the partition. It’s not India’s responsibility to care for Muslims in those countries. They made their choice, the exclusion respects that.

The original constitution had no reference to religion or otherwise, meaning, 'secular democracy'. This was included in an amendment by Indira Gandhi when she declared a state of emergency, when she came back to power after she was arrested by PM, Morarji Desai's Janata party govt. Neither Hindu nor Secular was worded in the original Constitution of India.

The Congress trampled democracy by changing the constitution illegally without putting it for a vote in parliament. Now these very crooks act like paragon of virtue and upright democratic values.

This is so sad those people who left India in fairly congress regime for better future and taken up citizenship of different countries are now bs about India when India is in path of growth, self reliance, resurgence of civilisation and reclaiming of forgotten pride.

And the most funny thing is Mr. Sanjay described Trudeau as liberal president when world is concerned about Freedom Convoy and other numerous instances. That says everything about his credential being a professor at some random university.

Modi inherited a declining economy in his first term. In 2013, India was amongst the “Fragile five”. He restructured it, it was painful but he pulled it off.

This is such a hit piece. The idea that they don’t describe what these “family laws” that UCC would do away with, or that the reason for CAA was to reinstate citizenship for those that are being religiously persecuted in Muslim majority countries or even that why it is right that a state deserves special rights. This guy can’t even pronounce the names of the people or places right, he is freaking joker.

just make sure you see both sides of a story before you make up your mind. For example, a murdered Canadian "Sikh activist" reported on as such and nothing else by Canadian media might miss out data from overseas (wanted for blowing up a cinema with 42 victims in Punjab), or even Canadian data like how citizenship was provided after Canada rejected 2 fraudulent applications - once refugee, and after a fraudulent marriage based application...and then there's the Canadian data that guys like Sam Cooper have tried to get public about the RCMP's doubts about said individual's connections with organised crime. 1984 dystopia here friend...for you and me both.

And the stakes for Indians in Canada in the next election is to elect a conservative govnerment and see if that wil prevent Canada's status as the country with the most attacks on Hindu places of worship in the world with not a single response from the polity...by Jughead's boys, hand in glove with traffickers and our parliament. What a joke it is to comment on others when the emperor has no clothes.

@@Scotian6444 International Relations 101 - threaten to extend a military alliance to a great power's borders and they will react. Too bad NATO's luminaries didn't understand that while they interfered in Ukrainian elections. As for Canada - nobody anywhere in the world cares what this country thinks about anything.

@@Scotian6444It really goes to show how far Indias misinformation campaign reaches. When Canada (rightly) accused India's government of nixing someone on our soil, indias disinformation campaign was so strong many immigrants here got texts and calls from their family back home asking them if they were okay because "the rise of attacks on Hindus had increased in Canada." It's bizarre, but unsurprising.

Modi titled central government schemes under the name of the prime ministership (pradhan mantri yojanas), while the previous congress governments named monuments, schemes, playgrounds after the Nehru-Gandhis. Takes immense dishonesty to frame this as modi taking credits for central government welfare schemes when in reality he changed it for better. Very one sided discussion, just unfortunate that media are incredibly partisan and embrace untruth these days.
