I do appreciate the message of loving ourselves, including our bodies, whatever size and shape. But my concern is that overweight and obesity can be a health issue. (My family has a history of diabetes and heart health issues.) Please understand, this is not a negative or a put down but a concern. Both my Mother and my Mother-in-Law struggled with loving and appreciating their bodies. My Mum weighted over 300 lbs and struggled with accepting her body size but she was the most loving mother I have known (yes, I am bias) and many others, beside my siblings, would agree. She cared about children, all children. My Mother-in-Law was slim and tall (an ideal size for a woman, size 6 and 5' 7") but she struggled with keeping on weight and felt that she was too thin. She told me (when she was in her 70s) that a boy teased her in high school telling her in a demeaning way she was skinny. Even decades later, she never was able to overcome that teasing about her body. My body size is somewhere in between my Mom and my Mother-in-Law and I appreciate this message of accepting ourselves and our bodies, especially as woman, and to be self-compassionate. My Mom died when she was 72 years old, (she was active in volunteering her church and community until a few months before she passed away) and my Mother-in-Law died when she was 90 years old. My Mum died early but she was a loving and caring woman, my Mother-in-Law lived a long live but was always complaining and unhappy in her senior years. We do need to be concerned about our physical health but more important is to be concerned about our inner happiness.
