So in the books, we don't know what happened to Theon since the end of season 2 (book 2). We don't read about all these torture scenes in season 3 in the books. So we don't know where he is, if he's dead, nothing. Then all of a sudden in book 5 we read a POV chapter of a character called Reek who is captured in the dungeons of the Dreadfort (Bolton Castle). This character is missing 4 toes, has only 7 fingers left, and many of his teeth have been knocked out with a hammer. His hair is white, his skin is gray and he looks like an old man. When you read his thoughts you realize that this man is broken and a little crazy. His psyche is at the end for fear that he might anger Ramsay. It takes you a while to realize that this old man is really Theon. You have to remember that the last time you read about Theon, he was an arrogant jerk at the height of his manhood. And then you realize that in the meantime, when he wasn't around, he became a wreck both physically and psychologically. George RR Martin doesn't show the torture that led up to it, but in the books you get a much better insight into what it all led to inside Theon's head. You get a unique look into what is going on in Theon's mind, why he is acting the way he is, his fears and so on, which a show could never convey.

Out of all the GoT reactors I've seen, you're the one who really shouldn't have been shocked by the fall of House Stark. You saw all the pieces coming together over the last two seasons, and called out every mistake Robb or Catelyn made as they made it. You said yourself that Robb was losing the war and you were right. You noted that it seemed far too easy to get Walder Frey to accept the apology. But we're trained by decades of more conventional storytelling to expect that the "Good Guys" will always win, and that some rather contrived plot device will show up to save them. The Freys coming back to help Robb just when that was the only way he had a chance seemed unrealistic, but so many people accepted it anyway simply because we all expect things to work out that way. Well, one of the reasons the series is so famous is because it doesn't play to standard storytelling conventions like that. You also correctly worked out what the deal was with Roose Bolton. Most people assume that he must have been a traitor all along, but that wasn't the case. At first he was one of Robb's key supporters. He just recognised that Robb was losing and when the Lannisters gave him a chance to switch sides he took it rather than get dragged down when the Starks fell. In many ways this mirrors what happened with Eddard and Baelish- I genuinely think that he hadn't made his mind up which side to support until the very end and turned on the Starks only when he worked out that because of Eddard's honour and naivety he was probably going to lose anyway. Great reaction anyway, as always!

Hm not really with Bolton, in the books it’s pretty clear he’s been setting up for a Stark betrayal (or at least scheming with the goal of an out from the war) from the beginning. The first battle Tyrion fights in book 1 has Bolton sending out other House’s troops to die on the front lines, then he fires arrows into his own troops and the Lannisters to thin the ranks of Robb’s army. I believe Robb and even the Lannisters comment on the fact that he didn’t have to engage them at all, but chose to in order to better his own position. And of course, he’s fine with Ramsay rampaging around the North and killing the Stark boys, before the Red Wedding or even book 3 or even before the Lannisters win the Blackwater. Great houses always have unruly bannermen (normally the next largest house) seeking to take their place.

From what I gathered from other comments in other reactions, I guess in the books it is known that Tywin LOVED his wife and was the only person he was "soft" for. Her death from Tyrion's birth turned him even colder and why he hates Tyrion so much. Glad you're back with another great reaction, Man of Winter!
@deiseabu2 жыл бұрын
Yes Tywins smile died the day Joanna died. Of course he’s probably going to hold a lot of resentment towards Tyrion because his birth killed the person he loved most in the world. It was probably a nail in the coffin then when Tyrion was born a dwarf and his personality causes so much friction with Tywin. I think if Tyrion was like Jaime, Tywin might have been able to accept Joanna dying for him but when Tyrion was such a disappointment to him it probably hurt twice as much. Obviously if Tywin was truly smart he’d be able to realize and get over his resentment towards Tyrion as it wasn’t his fault that his mother died.

@princeytron2 жыл бұрын
Another main issue is that Tyrion is all of Tywins flaws and his fears all at once. The thing he hates the most is mockery and laugher, because of how his father was mocked. He can’t stand it. The way Tyrion is mocked and Tywin for birthing him gets under his skin in the most savage way. Another thing is his lust. Tywin hates whores, he punishes women a lot, very severely. And he always attacks Tyrion’s way with women. The reason is because he himself has a great deal of lust. The secret tunnel to the brothel for “another hand” is heavily suggested to have been Tywins doing. Plus he hates Shae, after everything he said and did to Tyrion about it. Tyrion is brought face to face with his fathers absurd hypocrisy. The show never addresses it. Her being in his bed is just kinda a “oh that’s dickish” thing. In the books it’s much deeper. It reveals that for as strict and as hard as his father is, it is completely fake, lies. It makes Tyrion that the more mad over it.

The writers changed the timeline, but it was Tyrion who told her: A Storm of Swords - Tyrion VII: ( Sansa hoards her tears ) Tyrion dressed himself in darkness, listening to his wife's soft breathing from the bed they shared. She dreams, he thought, when Sansa murmured something softly-a name, perhaps, though it was too faint to say-and turned onto her side. As man and wife they shared a marriage bed, but that was all. Even her tears she hoards to herself. He had expected anguish and anger when he told her of her brother's death, but Sansa's face had remained so still that for a moment he feared she had not understood. It was only later, with a heavy oaken door between them, that he heard her sobbing. Tyrion had considered going to her then, to offer what comfort he could. No, he had to remind himself, she will not look for solace from a Lannister. The most he could do was to shield her from the uglier details of the Red Wedding as they came down from the Twins. Sansa did not need to hear how her brother's body had been hacked and mutilated, he decided; nor how her mother's corpse had been dumped naked into the Green Fork in a savage mockery of House Tully's funeral customs. The last thing the girl needed was more fodder for her nightmares. Unlike in the show, Sansa never shows her emotions or cries in public; nor does she bend the knee to the Lannisters even at her forced marriage.

Tywin never remarried because he really, really loved his wife, Joanna Lannister. She was also his cousin. In the books, his sister Genna Lannister, says that the first time that Tywin smiled was on his wedding. You could see the happiness in his eyes. Joanna was lady-in-waiting for Princess Rhaella, and lived on King's Landing. King Aerys had interest in her, it is rumored that he took her virginity the night of his coronation. When Tywin got married with her, Aerys also tried to sleep with her before Tywin because it was an old costume that the king could do that, no one knows what happened. When Aerys became truly mad and people were saying that was Tywin that ruled Westeros, he often offended Joanna to hurt Tywin. At a specific tournament, his offenses were so harsh that Tywin offered his resignation, but Aerys denied. From that point on, Tywin nurtured only contempt and hate towards his former friend Aerys, and we all know what happened after.

If memory serves, The Boltons and Starks only got along begrudgingly. The Boltons could not oppose The Starks as they had the majority of the north on their side. And as you correctly pointed out, Roose Bolton helped facilitate The Red Wedding since he knew Tywin had his back. I don't remember exactly when Roose turned traitor, but I recall it being towards the end of Season 2/beginning of Season 3. If I had to make an educated guess it would be when he married Talisa and Tywin won the battle of King's Landing. That took Stannis out indefinitely, The Starks had lost Winterfell to The Greyjoys, which was in turn taken back by The Boltons, and The Lannisters had The Tyrells on their side. He saw an opportunity and took it. As you also correctly pointed out, Ned is deceased, Rickon and Bran are presumed deceased, Arya is MIA, so therefore if Robb and Catelyn are removed from the picture, Sansa is the heir. If Roose could deliver that to Tywin, he had himself a fantastic deal. Plus he could win over House Karstark since their lord was executed for vigilante justice. Much as I loved Robb, he screwed himself over with bad decisions. It also did not help that Catelyn let Jaime go free. Don't get me wrong though, Robb and Catelyn were good people that simply made bad errors of judgement and more malicious forces like Tywin, Roose, and Walder took advantage of that.

Tywin only cares about "family" in the sense that he cares about the Lannister name. He cares about power, pride and glory, but he completely sets aside the wishes and needs of any individual member of his family. Every single Lannister can be miserable, so long as the Lannister name commands respect. That's no way to treat family, fuck that! He talks about setting things aside for your family, but he is the one who sets aside their needs for his. Tywin craves power and pride because people laughed at his father, and now everyone else must suffer so his needs can be met. What a hypocrite! And like you ask - why hasn't Tywin remarried? He demands that Cersei do, and she is the one who has to carry more children. Why hasn't Tywin made the same sacrifice for the family? Because he's a damned hypocrite.

That is basically why this is one of the greatest shows. If anyone can die, even characters you grew to love, that means the writing is solid and the characters are solid. And, something a lot of other shows/movie franchises lose sight of: if there are no stakes, then there is no tension. Which makes any action boring. With this show, you get a legitimate concern that at any moment, your favorite character could die. That keeps ya invested. And while episodes like this hurt (and I wish I could say the painful episodes will stop), it makes the hero/justice episodes that much sweeter! This show is an emotional rollercoaster. Just enjoy the ride bro.

You're absolutely right about the show being highly addictive, at least for now (opinions vary for later seasons). And I think the low moments are a key part of that. Without those, we might not feel the same relief when things go right. We wouldn't feel the same tension, if we thought "Oh well, it's the main character so nothing will happen to them". You spoke about it here, about that sense that actions in this show have consequences, and that's what creates the intense tension in these early seasons.

Great reaction! As for why Tywin Lannister never remarried: The books are clear that he really loved his wife, Joanna. They had a happy marriage too. In fact, it was said that Tywin ruled the Seven Kingdoms but he "was ruled at home by his lady wife." This is because she was his very trusted adviser, confidant and counselor. While she was alive, she ran her own house well. When a maid had reported that she saw young Cersi and Jaime being intimate, she separated them by moving Jaime to the other side of Casterly Rock (their kingdom) and even placed a guard outside of Cersi's bedroom. In fact, she even planned on betrothing young Cersi off to a young prince of Dorne (named Oberyn Martell). Also: GO COWBOYS!!!

He done what he needed to do for his family, it was just a shame it was the Starks it happened to. My contempt lies with the Boltons and the Freys, they actually carried it out. Tywin was in boss mood again, giving Turd King Joffrey some facts - 'any man that has to say he is a king, is no true king!' When Joffrey answered back, I half expected Tywin to put Joffrey over his knee. That would have been fun to watch, but Tywin's look alone put Joffrey in his place. I can't help but rate the man.

I like the way that Gendry/Davos scene is shot so that you can’t actually tell who is in jail

You reacted exactly how I reacted when I saw the red wedding. I stopped watching for 3 mos after. I was done lol. But your reaction to this series is my favorite.

25:48 i’ve always really liked that aspect of the show. all the various connections characters have with each other and the way storylines intersect makes it feel so real to watch. plus its fun to see two characters you never expected to meet (like sam and bran) interact on screen

You're the first person that's caught onto that soldier-guy calling Ramsay a bastard, how true that was. I've been waiting for someone to catch that!!!!!!

Great to see you're sticking with it, it's worth it - btw, those who tell you the writing isn't so good at the end - truth is, the show needed to run to 10 seasons, not just 8, which is why some storylines are compressed and don't feel right. The writers certainly dumped on the show, however, as they got a deal to write the Star Wars sequels and had to finish the show early to get their deal, so, yeah, total blame to the writers.

Love the GoT content. I've read all the books, novella, history books and watched every episode too many times to count. I'm here for you. This will get better, but they will get worse too. Hang in there.

I was dead inside. Felt as gutted as if it was happening to my own family. It is still brutal to watch. I almost didn't re-watch it with you.

In books, Theon ate rats in Ramsey`s dungeons for 2-3 years. Feel bad for that :))

It’s all well written until a certain point. That being said, these seasons are some of the best literature ever made

So, keen eye readers have noticed that Roose Bolton likely swapped to the lannisters during season 1. Roose led the 2000 men against tywin when tyrion was knocked unconscious. Bolton was also up quick to offer his services to Rob, capture theon which would be a valuable hostage when he takes over the north. And to find Jaimie, who he sent to kings landing for tywin. And was pissed off when his man chopped his hand off. If you go back for a rewatch, you can see seeds of Bolton's betrayal all the way up to the red wedding.

Glad to see you back Major! 😎And you're right Theon did his dirt but watching him go through torture and be broken 💔...I did a total 180 and he ended up becoming one of my favorites

Theon to me has one of the greatest arches in the entire show. The dude was a young kid trying to be a man and made a huge mistake. then over time, he grew up and realized his mistake.

I absolutely *LOVE* watching the penny drop! When someone puts all the clues together, connects all the dots, and figures out what's what....Ramsey Snow...Lord Bolton's psycho bastard son. Theon was strapped to the sigil the whole time. 😉
