I've now gotten the chance to play a bit of the game, and first impressions are that it's solid! There is a bit of a delay on most actions, not input lag but like the Castlevania whip, so everything you do has to be very intentional and thought out, which I generally prefer over reflex heavy games. Some enemies don't seem like they were designed with that in mind, though like the ones who charge at you with their cone-scream attack faster than your movement speed. And the fact that they doubled down on resource gathering (and that you can only bring one resource gathering tool at a time) drives me absolutely insane. I have some other nitpicks, but most boons and moves feel good once you figure them out so combat feels good, which is the important part. So yeah, solid first impressions!

Here, I'll give you my review. I have 15 hours in the game: The game is great, a lot of what made the core Hades gameplay good is kept intact, but it truly does do its own things with a lot of unique mechanics. The new dash system is weird at first but quite interesting, and there are new charge moves called omega moves built around a mana system, both making Melinoe feel fundamentally different from Zagreus, and the weapons feel very unique and do not just try and copy the same archetypes the weapons from the original game had. Or how the biomes have much variation, with unique mechanics like wide open fields with multiple rewards rather then series of rooms, or a hub connected to various rooms where you have to disable power to the exit. The issue with a lot of sequels is that they are way too different from the original in an attempt at uniqueness and in doing so lose what made the original so great, or are too similar to the original and do not have enough merit in their own right that either makes the new game not worth to play, or the old game not worth going back to. Hades II hits the sweet spot, making it a truly worthy sequel, and in my opinion a better game than what was already one of the best roguelites of all time. On top of all that, the game is significantly bigger than the original even in its unfinished early access state, the art is incredible as always, and the unique twists on the old Greek mythos is always entertaining. This game has consumed my life, and I cannot recommend it enough. One of my new favorites.

Even after a bunch of looking into it this comment taught me some new stuff that got me excited. Cheers friend, I’ll probably buy it sometime this weekend.

I just wish the dash wasn't so delayed, it feels so unresponsive, in Hades 1 you could cancel out of pretty much any attack by dashing, Hades 2 forgoes that in favor of making the game feel a bit more different, the omega moves also really fuck with the flow of combat since you just kinda stop what you're doing in favour of standing still to charge a single attack, I think it's a good game, I do not think it's better than the first Hades, at least not for combat

@@The_Jumping_Box it feels really different but I think it works, Melinöe just fights very differently than Zagreus. It's also EA so there's probably going to be refinement but once I adjusted to the new dash timing I haven't had any trouble staying mostly out of harm's way with it

honestly i wish i could filter reviews by people who have the achievement that you get when you beat a game. people who have actually done the campaign and experienced the game for what it is.

That would be good. Hades 2 does not have achievements

I feel as an expert in another game I played for 5600 hours, my review of "it's okay" is very much precedented.

I would say that the devs did a great job of creating a distinct experience for Hades 2 compared to the first game, both games have different playstyles despite having the some of the same mechanics (Boons, tarot cards which are the mirror upgrades, heat,...). Melione is not Zagreus and her playstyle is different from him (mana managing, distancing, Omega attacks, build paths,...) but still similar enough (boons, basic abilities, tarrot cards which is the mirror,...) as to not throw the seasoned players off and to still allow for the freedom to build as they please.

Expect new weapons with different mechanics, a magic system where you can use more powerful attacks at the expense of consuming mana, more in depth resource collection mechanics, and a new and improved progression system that replaces the role that the mirror of night had in the original. The game still definitely feels a lot like Hades, and that's probably the reason why the reviews just say "It's Hades but 2!" Supergiant has always made fantastic quality games so its harder for it to be a 'here's the game but better' type of sequel rather than a 'here's more of the game' type of sequel. If you liked the original, you'll find the sequel similar enough to be more of what you loved, but varied enough to still be interesting. As always, story, characters, voice acting, art, and music are top notch.

as a massive fan of Hades 2 (30 hours in and have killed the final boss twice), I can most definitely say it is Hades but Two

The problem is that Steam asks every player to leave a review after playing a certain amount of time, these reviews have a huge impact on the ongoing sales potential of the game, and your average person does not have the necessary dedication and insight to write up an informed review of anything. Steam reviews aren't (generally) going to provide you with an in-depth analysis of the game's mechanics and features; they're going to tell you whether people who played more than 20 minutes of the game had a mostly positive or negative experience with it.

Yeah I've got 30 hours of play so far and I still haven't reviewed it

Expecting steam reviews to be sensible and be more like 'actual' reviews with actual information was your first mistake, there's a reason people can vote "YES, NO or FUNNY" when voting for if the review was helpful or not. And overlooking that a good chunk of the steam reviews on the top actually do give you information that'd you need prior to purchasing was your second mistake.
@trikkinikki68438 ай бұрын
I mean this issue is far from steam-exclusive, it’s always harder to get info about highly anticipated sequels because people get so feral over it. Also curious what you mean by “a good chunk” because I’d guess like 5-10% of people on steam have been giving actually helpful information, or at least definitely way less than normal.
@shanegale61438 ай бұрын
You can sort by negative reviews since most people i've seen there have laid out the constructive feedback essays that you're looking for, i just checked rn and there's dozens. its really not a big deal dude
@pubfriendthegreat12598 ай бұрын
Some of them are probably bots. But a handful of them are genuine reviews and probably don't have the time to make an essay of how good the game is because they just started.
@connorhenderson2348 ай бұрын
Man, I donno about that one chief. Steam reviews have always been like this. If you're after a thorough review you might want to ask a person to explain their thoughts and feelings on it, or if not, you can watch a review on it. Don't wanna rag on you or anything my dude but this video is a bit rich; the game is in early access with heaps of changes bound to happen. Look at the original Hades right, from beta to release the game is VERY different. I wouldn't leave a review even if I've beaten Chronos at this point. So to recap I'd suggest just asking a mate for a review or watching someone online review it.

Okay so on one hand I agree On the other, you're out here expecting proper reciews from steam users when the reviews are a variant of Me likey 👍😃 Or Me no likey 👎😡 Steam reviews are a joke and you're even more of a joke for thinking they're not.

Brother man, steam reviews are never helpful. I’ve seen destiny 2 reviews that are instructions on how to hang yourself, and I’ve seen naked women made of ascii characters. If you want more information, buy the game and play for a bit, or just look up an article or video online. Steam reviews have never been the bastion of truth you seem to think they’re supposed to be
