Thank you Guys ! The best and most detailed walk through of what the hell this Treads and Matter standard are all about and how Home Assistant will be supporting and adopting this technology !

Hi guys, very interesting stream. Matter/Thread was still a thick fog for me :) With these detailed and very understandable explanations about the network infrastructure and its communication, JLO has completely achieved its goal and I now finally know how to classify the entire technology and recognize the advantages. Many thanks.

Fantastic stream. I recently purchased a Home Assistant Yellow to begin experimenting with home automation. I need a technology-related project after recently retiring from the technology world. I now feel like I have a much better understanding of Thread and Matter. I guess I also need to join the discord!

Hi, Short info. In order to keep the user experience during commissioning at a high level, it would be helpful to show important informations in the menu windows.... For example, a Matter device can only be paired once using the QR code... so it would be helpful to inform in the menu window (in the video at 1:07:20) that the QR code can only be used for the first pairing and otherwise the way via “more options” must be chosen. f.ex.: [QR scan only for pairing with first controller, otherwise use "more options"] But the way you shown at 1:21:10 is awesome and a great improvement😎

Thank you for taking the time to explain how Matter works and give an idea of what is on the horizon for the standard within Home Assistant.

This is awesome, thank you so much for sharing this discussion! Keep up the good work! Maybe I've just not gotten to that part in the video yet, but I must ask: does Matter address the issue of providing firmware updates to devices? That has historically been a weak point of many IoT devices, with both the firmware itself and the upgrade paths being proprietary, when there is one at all. And for the few truly OpenSource products out there, there is no standard for it as far as I know… Would be a blessing if Matter took a shot at solving at standardizing the upgrade path for devices. Is that a thing?

i really wish this info was on the website or there was a link to this video on the website. I spent days trying to get thread devices to connect to skyconnect but nothing worked until I just got pointed to the part about syncing the android and HA credentials. I don't think think this is a well known issue.

The setup pop up also shows on iOS, but maybe you can't choose between the Home Assistant app and the Apple Home app, and it defaults to Apple Home.

I have an eve matter device that got a firmware update through the apple home app, it didn't seem to involve the eve app in any way, it was just like updating a homepod, entirely managed by the apple home app downloading firmware and transmitting it over thread in to the eve power socket switch thing.

I have been able to add a nuki smart lock (matter&thread) using an iPhone and Nest Hub 2. In HA I have installed the thread device and selected the nest hub network as prefered, not sure if this step was needed or not…

Yikes you need a full android with google play services ? Welp i'll have to wait another solution :D It's sad in itself to require a phone. Could Home Assistant do the commissioning itself, without a phone, with the on-board or usb Bluetooth antenna ?

iOS and Android both will commission Matter products absolutely fine. The iOS app actually is a bit better at it than Android App is, but Apple requires using an Apple Border Router still, like an Apple TV or Home Pod type device. Most people have a phone these days for all the smart home apps so using a phone for commissioning is not really a big deal. If you don't have a mobile phone, then likely you are not the type of person wanting to take advantage of the full power of home automation ior do it as a DIY project. All your voice assistant speakers require a mobile phone for setup also. But as I said, Matter does not require Android, you can do it absoltely fine with Apple iOS also

Why do we need Thread when you could just use WiFi like apple does with HomeKit? Usually you have good WiFi connection across your entire home?. (Should be mandatory to support WiFi for matter devices, thread could be an addition)
@Riboshom

As far as I can tell, mostly because Wi-Fi isn't meshed and devices running on coin cell batteries can't supply very high antenna power.

I’m just giving up with Home assistant.. I’ve tried pairing an Aqara P2 sensor with Matter and it just doesn’t get past “connecting to Home Assistant” and fails saying “Something went wrong”.

It looks like getting things to work, you have to do a few things that aren't entirely intuitive. Starting at 52 minutes, Marcel covers a variety of prerequisites (gotcha).

@BramWarrick Thanks for replying. I did get it working in the end. They currently have an issue with Matter commissioning but found a workaround. 😃

For how great 'implementation first' sounds (and should be) it doesn't seem to be doing much good, considering every Matter device I have tried to pair in any manner so far has not worked (with or without Home Assistant, just in general).

I have only one Matter device which Eve Energy with Matter firmware. I'm able to pair it with Homekit w/o problem, but no matter what I try I cannot add it to HA neither using the QRCode (after reset obviously) or using the paring code got from Apple Home. I don't think I'll be a huge fan of matter

i wish there was a better way to support you without forcing my information up into the cloud which I absolutely dont want. Can't you charge a subscription for the software or something? I want to support the development and the company but cloud home stuff is a hard no. :/
