I love Dr. Bloom's swift elegance in representing complexities with clarity, while not dumbing them down. It's also refreshing that he's able to have bold opinions without being an asshole. A rare feat!

42:15 "So, before we call people stupid for their views, ask what are they trying to maximize? What's their goal, here? I think when we do that, we find they're smarter than they look." God Bless You, Dr. Bloom

Skinner did not outright reject thoughts and feelings; rather, he argued that they are also behaviors. Skinner's perspective emphasized that all aspects of human experience, including internal states, can be understood within the framework of behavior. By considering thoughts and feelings as behaviors, Skinner aimed to provide a comprehensive account of human functioning. It's important to note that Skinner's approach doesn't deny the existence or significance of thoughts and feelings. Instead, he sought to examine the functional relationships between these internal states and observable behavior. Skinner believed that by understanding how thoughts and feelings influence our actions, we can gain a deeper understanding of behavior as a whole. By characterizing Skinner as completely dismissing thoughts and feelings, I feel there's a misrepresentation of his nuanced viewpoint. Skinner's approach provides a valuable perspective on the interplay between internal states and external factors in shaping behavior.

I use Pinker's How the Mind Works when I teach undergrad Cognitive, and Sopolsky's Behave when I teach undergrad Physio Psych, but have struggled to find a good popular science book for Intro. Maybe this is it? I'll check it out. Students love pop science books, won't remember 1/100 of what is in a textbook (even if they did read it), and an intro class should be a view from 30,000 feet. I'm hopeful.

Priming: after a hijacked airliner from Los Angeles, investigators worked out how the hijacker managed to get a weapon in luggage on board. Security was lax. I assume they'd wandered around rooms with LAX baggage tags.

Great job Rob. I think I will get the audiobook. I wonder how Blum would approach the Donald Hoffman style of hypothesis that natural selection did Not give us the faculties to see the workings of reality at all? That our psyches are a tool to interpret, and behave, within a fictional construct. My guess is thaat Blum would dismiss Hoffman's line of thought.

By the way, I wrote what he said about phantom limbs and the existence of a plan in the brain that represents the exquisite details of entire human body many years ago, and he talked about language in other video, I wrote that too in more details on closer to truth many times since years ago too, take a look at chomsky, I recognised that since I was a little child (about 8 years old) that there’s built-in grammar ready to adapt any language and that language is just a symbolic representation of human thoughts,…etc if that’s new then this one is a thief too..
