As a truck driver, I am not interested in one. The route that I run aka 700 miles per day, it wouldn’t work with dot hours 11 of drive time that drivers are working with. Most long haul drivers wouldn’t have the time or access to mega chargers to make it work. It will be better for short haul with the ability to charge along the route. Your comment about diesel particulates in exhaust has long been a thing past. Diesel exhaust filters (DPF) that traps particle (and burns them off) and low sulfur diesel has been a requirement of diesel engines for a long time. The requirement of diesel exhaust fluid that is injected into exhaust (DEF) that lowers NOX emissions that went in effect in 2009 is super clean. You can at stand near a new truck exhaust while it’s idling and not smell diesel exhaust smell or diesel particulate matter. I can fill my tanks (190 gallons) in about 10 minutes for 1500 miles of range. Class 8 trucks (that’s truck, trailer and total cargo weight) have total weight limit of 80k lbs over 7 axles. There’s a been a trend over the last 20 years to make the trucks lighter for more cargo capacity. When the trucks start gaining weight, the profitability goes down. It’s a very complex problem! Going electric isn’t a fix all solution. It has to be a more competitive and a net cost savings to be total replacement for diesel trucks. The energy density of batteries will have to be significantly increased ,battery weight will have to be massively reduced and lower purchase costs for a ev trucks to make it competitive with diesel trucks. Many of the people watching this video are ignorant to the new diesel semi trucks that are clean idle emitting no fumes. Our electric grid is stuck in the 60's and can't handle what these electric vehicles require on a large scale.

So what I hear is that you actually do want an electric truck, you just want to wait until the batteries are more energy dense and cheaper, which is fair enough and I think, the actual plan with all electric heavy goods vehicles and planes. Although postal services in the days of dashing highwaymen did, in fact, solve this theoretical range problem a long time ago. Not to mention, why is anyone driving loads that far, they should be on trains in the first place. So glad no government thought it'd be a good idea to rip up perfectly good train lines in favour of the automobile.

@@AC-ir3odExcept that isn’t true, there’s literally 3x the capacity on the electrical grid compared to the 60’s and coal is a much larger percentage of that output compared to today’s grid. If anything we are easily adding enough capacity to the grid to cover the electric vehicles coming online. Look at the EIA statistics.

Recharging a 900 kWh battery pack overnight could need a 70 or 100 kW charger, especially if avoiding peak hours.

What is your take on charger freeze on new locations as relates to semi. The semi needs a different charger than auto and most current stations can’t physically handle trucks. One of the earlier stated obstacles was the need to build new infrastructure quickly as semi hit road. Most would have chargers at start and delivery point but still inadequate. Any ideas?

Tesla ate so far from the first m9ver on semi trucks. There's, Renault, Mercedes, I believe a couple of US companies lord knows how many Chinese companies not least of all a now well established Electric Bus companies all over, these are basically semi working out of a home base. But I agree Tesla Semi is so cool. They need now to go large or go home

There’s nothing dumb about that opinion. But ultimately the Tesla semi is a fail and it proves this year after year. Just like the solar roofs are a fail. Neither ‘product’ has any meaningful impact in the real world or on the balance sheet.

There are plenty of batteries that can be purchased in the open market. There’s another reason Tesla isn’t producing them in mass. Probably has more to do with cost.

@@makisekurisu4674 the Chinese may be subsidizing their cars and the profit margins are much lower than Tesla. The semis probably aren’t as cost effective as their cars. On a related matter Musk really screwed up when he made the decision to not pursue a cheap BEV. His $50B pay package. Would pay for a dozen new factories and the development of several new car models. Absolutely ridiculous.

I mean, does need for megachargers suggest that Tesla hold on infrastructure will only be relatively short lived until semis are on road or Tesla will sell magacharger units to others who will install like Tesla selling superchargers to others (BP Electrify America ) as been suggested.

I would not automatically jump to Tesla slowing down anything regarding the megachargers based on what we know or anecdotal information. Way too much of that going on with this layoff. The semi is a bright spot where Tesla does not have to compete with countries willing to buy the EV market. As far as I know.

The original semi announcement was full of promises that seem like vapourware by now. The one I remember that I thought was really important for its success was that Tesla was supposed to build the chargers and they were going to guarantee a rate that was ridiculously low to make the operation cost really cheap. That seems to have been forgotten.

I just don’t see how we can keep using road infrastructure the way we do today. Electric cars and trucks, as much as I love them, can’t save the planet alone. We need massive investments in rail infrastructure, and moreover is needs to be federalized as the major private railroads have proven they do not care about running railroads effectively, they only care about profit squeezing.

Electric passenger trains are a common thing on east coast. It would be cool if we could do the same with freight trains. In the early days of transportation there were electric/battery electric trolleys. The trolleys would go on overhead electricity when in the city but used batteries for gaps in the lines or to reach out to areas just outside the electric lines. Did you know that home electricity typically followed out from the electric trolley lines. If you didn't have a trolley line you most likely didn't have house hold electricity.

@@joelado Ireland is going to be introducing BEV trains in the next few months to a year for their major train network. It'll be interesting to see what happens, considering there will be less friction with steel on steel contact with the wheels and rails, maybe they'll have better range than private road vehicles or Semi's. With the torque that electric motors can provide maybe would be even better for hauling long freight trains.

@@techbysteff4829 I'm sure they will. The reason why locomotives went with a hybrid as its standard. The diesel/electric train was because of the powerful torque that electric motors provided for uphill climbs, while diesel was chosen for its efficiency. Overhead wire freight just gets rid of the need for diesel to go long distances and batteries allows them to through areas that don't have the overhead wires. The Tesla Semi have lead to a discovery that larger heavier freight trucks actually make it easier to capture regenerative braking energy going down hills. I wonder if this will be the case for electric freight trains? Probably yes.

It will probably go as well for Pepsi as it did for Hertz. 500 mile range for a semi is nothing. Many semi’s have over 1,000 miles of range. There is a reason why EV sales are slowing dramatically as once the coolness factor is gone, it is just a bunch of hype. No way will I pay more for something less convenient. It’s not saving the planet.

The Tesla 18-wheeler is dead - stick a fork in it. Who will pay for the permits and zoning to bring in massive powerlines, and who will pay for the substation? and why would they? BEV 18-wheelers weigh much more than their diesel counterpoint and that dead weight has to be hauled everywhere all the time and it takes away from the useful load the trucker gets paid to haul BEVs are dying worldwide and hybrids are now the king. The elon 18-wheeler is another "solution" flailing around looking for a "problem" to solve.

I've seen several of them on flatbeds and on the side of the road here in Southern California. The reduced hauling capacity and range makes no sense. They're about 3x the price of the diesel equivalent. Before the fans attack, tell mw why Tesla wont post the MSRP and wont post the actual hauling capacity. Not the gross vehicle weight, the max weight that is cargo

Dude , have you ever driven a big rig ? All these Tesla trucks are doing cushy shuttles and light duty operations , and make no mistake , when it comes to heavy duty operations, they are no match for a good big diesel. You really shouldn’t gush over Tesla marketing. And let me tell you , a heavy truck being driven like a sports car is not , and never will be how handling freight should be. I’ve been an owner driver and a company driver and driven all manner of big rigs and heavy machinery….. I would not touch an electric truck run on 4 or 5 ton of batteries that are toxic to build , massively expensive to replace, and a handicap due to their weight. Go out and buy a couple of big rigs run them for a year , then tell us what you think. And I can tell you , no one I know wants an Electric truck for heavy operations or buses for that matter.

Really? Every time I read bus drivers talking about electric buses they love them. Mysteriously. I'm sure it has nothing to do with how smooth they are to drive, not having to sit breathing in pollution, the reduced noise and the improved cabin space. They're coming in in my area and it's wonderful, although my route will probably be the last to get them. You know they're making mining vehicles, which make your thing look like a toy for a toddler, that are fully electric, right? This is a solved problem. Your vehicles are going to be electric, there's no point resisting.
