While the Queen looked dazzling at this event, Princess Diana stole the show that year! It was her first State Opening of Parliament, and she looked super gorgeous! With her white satin and chiffon gown, as well as her tiara, she now looked like a true Royal!

It looks so strange that the Queen carried her handbag into the Lords Chamber; nowadays she always leaves it in the Robing Room. Also, noticeably more members of the Royal Family. And I am starting to see why they stopped this walking backwards thing: Jack Straw made it look easy, but poor Lord Hailsham seems to have found it much more taxing.

Royal peers (including the Prince of Wales) were all members until 1999, but they attended only at the State Opening and certainly did not speak in debates. The Princess Royal, on the other hand, is not a royal peer. She used this chair of state on the Queen's left, though, in any case, being a member is not a prerequisite for being allowed to sit on the red benches for the ceremony: the benches nearest the throne on the Spiritual side (to the Queen's right) are occupied by foreign diplomats.

"State" here means "formal" or "official", as in "state visit" or "state apartments".
