The U.S. Navy is already operating the Triton drone boat near Iran, and more Tritons could soon be used to counter China and other adversaries in the world’s waters.
The autonomous sailboat-turned-submarine can carry various payloads, and since it’s powered by solar panels, it can sail autonomously for months at a time. Military experts say drones like the Triton could be used for various offensive and defensive purposes, from defending ports and monitoring underwater pipelines to laying sea mines and attacking Navy ships.
WSJ’s Shelby Holliday got a closer look at the stealthy ocean drone.

The D.o.D just invested into a Rutgers project. It's a UUV (unmanned underwater vehicle) that dispenses drones that can swim and fly. So the UUV dispenses the drone, it swims to a dedicated point, then breaks the surface to fly like a normal drone.

A few years ago Rutgers set loose a glider which sailed from New Jersey to Spain. Every few hours it would surface to take a position fix and recharge its batteries. Haven't heard much about it since then.

For what it's worth I have a degree in Fish and Wildlife Management but I'm also a US navy submarine vet. I'm a bit pragmatic about the military industrial complex. You have to have a safe country if you want to do any meaningful environmental research at all. There is no doubt that a sacrificial weaponized drone will make a lot more money than a few research platforms and the military budget is much higher than the budget for research. They are really cool little machines and I'm glad they are out there in any capacity.

Here’s an idea. Maybe design it so that if someone tries to grab it, and they don’t have some kind of late authentication device or something on them, the craft basically overloads its batteries and blows itself up. Or at the very least completely destroys its internal circuitry. After all, you can’t learn a whole lot from Chard remains. I can definitely see these things working as everything from a obvious spying unit to maybe even a kind of mine laying device. And if we could develop them, maybe it could deliver some small torpedoes or something. But again, I feel this thing should have some kind of self destruct system. Because I can tell you without a doubt there are probably countries out there right now that would look at this thing and they are probably salivating at the possibility of trying to grab one.

The things could be awesome for surreptitiously minesweeping before you enter an area. Minesweepers can't move quickly as it is. Or just providing 24/7 surveillance outside your own ports. It could actively ping for enemy submarines, and the only way they could remove it would be to waste a torpedo worth more than this drone, announcing their presence as they do it.

Their 5 knot speed could be a handicap. If the target ship is travelling at 18 to 20+ knots there’s no way it could catch up; so they are more akin to passive observation platforms that can keep track of ship movements through a certain area. They had better have some kind of low emission radar so that they can detect oncoming vessels and go into submerged mode to avoid detection. The ocean is pretty large so the chances of a collision are slim, but if it was hit by a vessel at speed who knows if it could survive the impact, even if submerged.

What about unmanned remote and/or AI controlled subs with a 'device' on board? Hug the bottom and then go vertical underneath a ship. If AI aligned, one moment in time a country has a powerful Navy, next moment in time, not so much. Could also take out bridges and/or disrupt ports. Cost benefit analysis: cost of the sub versus cost of let's say an aircraft carrier. Good deal.

Also, a question: DO ALL GALAXIES EVENTUALLY COLLAPSE IN UPON THEMSELVES? a. Modern science claims that 'gravity' is matter warping the fabric of spacetime. b. There is a lot of matter in a galaxy which would put a huge dent in spacetime. c. How could a galaxy not collapse in upon itself if space and time were warped to make it so? d. Or, is modern science wrong as to what 'gravity' truly is? e. And what exactly is 'space' that it can be warped? f. And what exactly is 'time' that it can be warped? g. Modern science claims that from nubula clouds in this universe that new stars, planets, moons, solar systems and a new galaxy can form. h. Modern science claims that nubula clouds come from supernova'd stars. i. It must have been a huge star that supernova'd so as to be able to generate a nebula cloud large enough to generate more stars, planets, moons, solar systems and a new galaxy. j. Or, is modern science wrong about how all nebula clouds form? k. Is it at least possible that galaxies collapse in upon themselves, go supernova, thereby generating enough matter and energy so as to be able to generate new stars, planets, moons, solar systems and a new galaxy? l. Galaxy -> Collapses in upon itself -> Supernova's -> Huge nebula cloud forms -> New galaxy eventually forms. m. Possibly been going on throughout all of eternity past, is going on today, and possibly will be going on throughout all of future eternity? n. Possibly also why there are so many unanswered questions concerning the singular big bang theory, because the singular big bang theory is not really true? o. The universe always existed in some form, never had a beginning, and might possibly never have an end? No Creator necessary? Is that even why in part some cling to a singular big bang theory so as to be able to still in part be able to justify a Creator God existing (which probably does not actually exist in actual reality)? p. Modern science claims that an expanding 'space' of this existence will end in a 'big freeze'. But is it more correct that this existence will not end in a big freeze but just that galaxies and life just come and go in this eternal existence? Life just has to find a way to stay alive in outer space with galaxies that come and go, otherwise life ends one day from something, including possibly a collapsing galaxy?

The submarine's value is highly dependent on how deep and quickly it can dive. If an adversary's plane, helicopter or UAV spots the sub, it has to dive fast and deep enough that a strafing run doesn't sink it. It would also need to go deep enough that it's not readily visible, once an adversary's boat is in its area, looking underwater to depth charge it.

@@furchicken They are no sneakier than fish... and they catch fish by the ton. Ever see a haulback on offshore fisheries trawler? The ones they call 'factory ships"....... how huge are their nets and how deep they fish? Ever see a fishing fleet from here to the horizon, trawling? These things would have to avoid trawlers. Nuclear subs have to avoid trawlers, for that matter.... if they are transiting a fishing ground. Or so it seems to me.

@brietoe
@brietoe 6 ай бұрын
If you look at 1:21, you can see the Tritons out on the water as well as a mini yellow floatation device. The 'Rope' is a cable that attaches to the optional flotation device. This is used to provide wireless communication to the Triton, while they are underwater.

Hydrogen powered, electric drone propellers, plus: 'BATTERYLESS BATTERIES': To help power equipment in outer space: Potential endless energy source basically anywhere in this universe: a. Small aluminum cones with an electrical wire running through the center of the cones, cones spaced apart (not touching I'm thinking) but end to end. b. Electromagentic radiation energy in the atmosphere interacts with the aluminum cones. c. Jostled atoms and molecules in the cone eventually have some electrons try to get away from other electrons of which those electrons gather at the larger end of the cone, of which also creates an area of positive charge at the smaller end of the cone. d. The electron's in the wire are attracted to the positive end of the cone and the positive 'end' in the wire are attracted to the negatively charged end of the cone. e. Basically a 'battery' has been created inside the electrical wire itself, different areas of electrical potential. Basically a 'wire battery' or a 'batteryless battery', however one wanted to call it. f. Numerous cones placed end to end increases the number of 'batteries' in the wire. (In series to increase voltage, in parallel to increase amperage). * Via QED (Quantum Electro Dynamics) whereby electromagnetism interacts with electrons in atoms and molecules, one would have to find the correct 'em' frequency for the correct material being utilized for the cones. The shape of the cones could also come into play. The type and size of the wire as well as the type and thickness of the insulation between the cones and the wire would also be factors. * Of course also, possibly 2D triangles made up of certain materials with a conductor going down through the center of the triangle could possible achieve the same 'batteryless' battery system. * Plus possibly with the 2D concept, layered 2D's that absorb different energy frequencies, thereby increasing the net output.

@@user-vp9lc9up6v It would need to be very light, also the submersible mode probably wouldn't be able to work for very long unless they get new battery tech. But yeah I think they definitely have the budget for dedicated aerial drones

@@papajohnsuk5965 yeah not to mention that you'd need to somehow fit wings onto the thing and that'll lead to a whole host of drawbacks for the platform
