Not sure why people would be upset by that. I don't have GOG, but there's older PC games they offer that I would like to buy and run on my Steam Deck. If GOG officially supported the Steam Deck, I'd create an account and they'd get my money.

I don't think that's asking too much, but if they did they'd be supporting their competitors product. While also getting some stuff working on linux/contributing to proton, which is kinda a steam product as well (not technically, but their a hugge contributing force) They have a bit of a fickle relationship with Linux to an extent people made things like heroic launcher and lutris. I think people get a little too overzealous and passionate sometimes and they're worried about something getting framed in a bad light that they love.

What Valve are doing with Proton on Steam is nothing short of a miracle and it will take years/decades for their whole library to be tested and working under SteamOS as well as it does on Windows. The GOG store is just too big and even if their launcher gets ported to the device, just the thought that they can do the same about their game catalog is unimaginable. However as Linux goes, where there's Wine there's always a way.
@spicydeath822 жыл бұрын
yes, to be deck verified it would take forever to go through gog's library. but since proton doesn't always need per game tweaks, there's a good chance most of the games will work but will need a keyboard and mouse plugged in to play, or special mappings set up in steam.

Idk about your timescale. Like technically yeah, but basically every title people care about will be tested in months as it's community sourced. I'm sure some stragglers will go under tested or just not tested full stop, but valve aren't testing every single title in house

The Steam controller was a bit of a flop though, good idea/intentions, badly executed. I mean I got mine for a couple £ because Valve were trying to get rid of their inventory(along with a Steam Link) One mistake they made was talking about how the touchpad would be better for fps games than a 2nd analog stick, and it just isn't, if you've ever played an fps on a laptop using the touchpad rather than an external mouse, you'll know what it's like. They should have spoken about how they gyro makes it easier to aim in fps games, but they either didn't realise or didn't care until it was too late, and the ABXY buttons were too low on the pad.(and too small, and to the left instead of the right of the secondary pad)

Valve really knocked it out of the park. I'm a primarily PC gamer, who mostly uses steam, so this console feels like it was made for me. Most my library is there, and everything has worked flawlessly for me (except sonic mania, which was defaulting to a weird aspect ratio, but I fixed it in settings in 5 seconds sooo). I hope Valve continues support and reiterates on this idea, because I think it's one of the best things they've done in years
@HiPlayerProdigy2 жыл бұрын
Yep a lot of the fixes are very easy but I think my problem is when people start doing comparisons to OneX and Aya devices whicb have WAY more issues running games that people hardly mention. On VSD sometimes all you need to do is change Proton.
@wickersticks2 жыл бұрын
@@HiPlayerProdigy I just don't think people understand how manufacturing works either. A company like Valve is making considerably more Steam Decks than a company like Aya of Ayn. Valve is producing around 20k a week vs other companies making around 1k production total. It's the same thing when people call the Steam Deck a Nintendo Switch killer. Nintendo production capabilities are considerably higher than Valves. It is physically impossible for Valve to outsell the switch and it is physically impossible for Chinese alternatives to outsell the steam deck. That isn't even getting into how important steamOS is for making the experience GOOD. Making a portable machine is half of the issue, the OS experience needs to match, and Valve is the only company providing both. Not to mention having such a high install base for the product means you are more likely to find online resources for your issue and how to solve it. Inevitably someone along the way encountered the same bug and shared the solution online

Even though all of the DOSBox games in their library would be dead simple to make compatible with Linux (there's DOSBox for Linux), I guess their primary market by far is still Windows based, and as a business I guess it would be hard to say "only certain titles have Linux support". Personally, I think judging the steam deck for its ability to run Gog, Windows, or emulation games is a bit unfair. Steam is being very consumer friendly to allow competitors to run on their device. Yo have to jail break other devices to do the things it lets you do freely. i think the steam deck should be judged for how well they are getting their steam library to operate, and everything else is icing on the cake. There is plenty on steam to keep you occupied.
@SherrifOfNottingham2 жыл бұрын
The fact is the games run fine, it's just that GoG is not supporting Linux so Galaxy can't be installed in any capacity. It's just a reminder that GoG is a business and not your friend, fact is their website only pushes the "DRM Free" aspect because it's good for marketing, thus the reason that these days it doesn't really push that hard on it because the sentiment is that "lightweight" DRM is fine. (Fact is GoG has DRM too and that's kinda my point, requiring you to login to prove you purchased software in order to download it is DRM, HumbleBundle is more DRM free on the titles that have DRM free available). The fact that this company that is all about shedding the shackles of DRM doesn't have a linux client is pretty telling that it's all business decisions. Developing for Linux isn't "profitable" for them, so they're not going to bother. Supporting steam deck will only end up helping them in the long game, but in the short term it will be a cost to benefit customers that have already bought games, and they sure as hell don't care about them. The fact that once I got steam deck set up I was able to hit the power button to switch it to "desktop" mode was amazing, I wish the desktop mode was better built for being a mobile platform but hey it was there and doesn't take too much effort to piece together and get emudeck running, hell I can even download all the illegal roms I want directly to it, no jailbreaking or routing necessary. Steam made something special here, and the only reason gog says they won't support it... is because Steam is their competitor, what they want people to do is not buy the steam deck, and by the time they realize they would profit off of supporting the steam deck, it will be too late for them as a company. Dealing with steam.dll DRM has and always will be fundamentally more worth it than dealing with buying games on GoG.

the steamdeck battery is useless, the system itself is GIANT. the thing cannot be used at full power unless plugged in, so. it might as well not even be a portable handheld. a switch OLED is the greatest handheld ever. it has far superior battery, it has plenty of triple AAA games, like dying light, skyrim, friday 13th, evil dead, witcher 3 etc. AND tons of amazing nintendo games like mario odyssey, breath of the wild, mario kart etc. and it has a better screen actually, not to mention it COMES with a dock and is insanely cheaper in price. the switch can actually fit some peoples pockets and depending on the model you get, you could fit it into most pockets with the lite. it does not NEED to replace your gaming laptop or desktop PC. a handheld should just be an option you use when you need to go out, and the switch is perfect for that. with all the great games it has and ease of use and design. it just beats the holy hell out of a steamdeck. this steamdeck is literally offensive. valve has the balls to call this thign a handheld, but its actually just a less capable gaming PC with the gimmick of looking like a prtable handheld, even tho its battery only lasts max maybe 3 hours with triple AAA games. yeah yeah i know you can get battery banks etc, but why? whats the fucking point of doing that if your using a HANDHELD. you might as well take out the laptop and plug in. i just dont get why anyone is wasting money on this thing. i say we boycott valve and force them to make a better handheld and refund our money back. its theft. with those teir model prices, they should have added something worth extra money. like i dont know, BETTER BATTERY????

My real gripe is with the higher price I’d have some fear of analog drift or other potential controller issues you’ve seen as of late would render it unplayable or require specialized repair/service. So I would like the option to have easier replacement or even removable controllers. Doesn’t have to be “Switch like” that definitely solves that issue but maybe “pop out drop in modules” would be fantastic. Just my personal opinion.

I aim to try and use Moonlight very extensively when I get mine (including through Wireguard for remote play) so we'll see how things hold up, but it might be something to try since supporting them natively is a mixed bag it seems.

I wish my experience with the deck was as smooth, it's been more of a nightmare. I've been sent three Decks, forth on the way, and they've all been bad. I was apart of the Q2 Crew and got mine about two months ago. That one would boot loop on the initial update until finally the internal storage just stopped working. Got an RMA, sent that back, got a new one. This Deck got through the update alright, but it would randomly say the battery was depleted and shut down. This was fresh off the charger and at 100%. If I kept the charger plugged in, it would stay on and I'd watch the battery go from 100% to 0% to 60%, all over the place in a span of minutes. Got another RMA, sent it back, got a new one, same exact problem. Now I've sent this one back and I'm waiting on my fourth. And I know your first instinct is think I must doing something wrong. 1) Other people have reported having the same problems I've had and 2) I'm only taking the thing out of the box and plugging it in. I dunno, man. It works if I leave it plugged in, and I do love it. But the defeats the point of it being portable. I could return it, but I've already sunk so much time, energy,and money into this thing. And before anyone says it: If you're Deck is working perfectly, awesome. I hope you're enjoying it. I say that sincerely, no sarcasm.

Love this hands-on review on this fantastic machine. You go beyond the surface on this, and it opens up some pretty cool things to do with the Steam Deck. As if it wasn't already cool enough as it is! One comment, and I know I am nitpicking here. 13:35, Proton isn't an emulator. It is a reverse-engineered Windows runtime environment that runs the games natively by translating system calls into Linux-compatible equivalents. Translating calls is a lot faster and more efficient than emulating said calls. Emulation is mostly used when trying to run code compiled for one architecture on a different architecture. Specifically Wine (or Proton, which is Wine with a big beautiful cherry on the top), can't run ARM software since it simply translates Windows calls into Posix calls. But they are still x86 calls. Same goes for DX -> Vulkan. It's the same hardware running beneath it all. It's only the layout, so to speak, of the API that differs. So as long as that can be translated, it works pretty much natively. Which is also why so many games run really well with Proton. They absolutely wouldn't with an emulator. HOWEVER! In the case of GOG games, it sometimes actually IS emulation, since GOG games often use DosBox, which uses an entirely different architecture for many things. And therefore emulation is required. So it would seem it actually runs those games using Wine, which run the Windows version of the DosBox emulator. Kind of funny when you think about it, since DosBox has native Linux support... :D

@@FeelingShred I know exactly what you mean and that was my biggest concern, but after having it in my hands the screen is not as bad as I thought it would be. And in comparison to ps3/x360 you get the freedom of PC being able to tweak the settings. It is also true these games can be played on a laptop (maybe even connected to older big full hd display), but it is a big difference in comparison to be able to play them on a handheld.
