Good stuff and welcome to the party! One important thing: I would highly recommend learning about the "Golden 40" that leverages the 40Hz capabilities of the Deck's display. Inevitably, you'll often end up worrying if a recent release can run at 60FPS on there. The Golden 40 would massively help here: Due to the fact you can lower the panel's refresh rate to 40Hz through the Quick Action Menu, you are able to go for 40FPS instead of 30. Why you may ask? Despite a 10FPS additional payload to the Deck's graphics APU, 40 FPS is right in the middle between 30 and 60 FPS in terms of frame pacing - meaning a nearly-60 FPS experience. Try it out! If you want to see this in action, feel free to give an older video of mine a shot, where I tried to explain this comprehensively.
@nikitamedvedev4696 Жыл бұрын
Funny how 40Hz/FPS became popular due to steam deck release. I've been using this trick since mid 10 to give almost 60 fps experience on low-mid laptop.
@qlum Жыл бұрын
It also depends on the game, some games you can do a stable 45, others a stable 50 - 55, all of those can be worth it. I personally played nier automata with mostly a 52fps lock.
@deckverse Жыл бұрын
@@qlum But the returns in input latency and frame pacing are not always worth the trade. For instance, the jump in both from 45 to 50 is smaller than from 40 to 45. So at some point you begin to trade in battery life and fan noise versus just a really small amount of improvement here. In the end, again, it's still a thing of personal preference and a nice proof for how flexible both Deck and SteamOS are! :)

I'd enjoy more videos on this bad boi. I've been playing GTAIV on the Steam Deck myself because whatever I did on PC didn't quite feel/look satisfying. On Steam Deck tho? No issues at all. I turned out view distance, traffic density and the last option too (forgot what it was) and put everything on high. FPS sort of jumps around at certain places but honestly I found that there's no point uncapping the fps ever (unless you go into desktop mode and play CS:GO at it, but if the fps dips a lot then I'd cap it too, maybe at 100 in game). You lose battery for no reason really, I personally can't see much if any difference in smoothness, but then when it jumps from 80 to 60, the frame pacing goes out the window. Worth mentioning that Steam Deck's frame pacing is excellent if the hardware can keep up with the game, it does feel like some games play better on the Deck than on PC. For that reason, I am (was) playing Bully on the Deck because quite frankly the 30fps on small screen with excellent frame pacing is... fine... It really is, it feels 5 times as smooth as on my PC with the 60fps fix that would crash all the time anyway. GTA IV gets to 50fps on my settings sometimes when driving really fast through the bridge onto the 2nd island especially, but also in the city, the further I get into the game the more dips I notice so I locked the game to 50fps and it really does still feel great (was on 55 lock for a long time which felt no different to 60 but more dips appeared). It's a great device, I love it.

Im using the Steam Deck over 1 year now and i must say: i love that thing. Many old and some new games runs pretty great. I set some games at 30, 45 or 60 fps and its much smoother than unlimited. Secret hack: you can already use dual boot so that you can switch between Steam OS and Windows 10/11. Useful for older games or games that doesnt run with steam os. But now enjoy your steam deck. It's a good choose!

Thanks for sharing your initial experiences with the Steam Deck! If I needed one, I would gladly buy a Steam Deck, though maybe one with the most possible storage (or at least upgrade the storage manually). Also I would be happy with 30FPS on one of these, plus lowered settings (and possibly power limited settings) in order to conserve battery power, since getting under 2 hours of battery life on a full charge is far from ideal, and pulling a lot of current from the battery will not help its overall longevity; I wouldn't want to be replacing Steam Deck batteries every 12-18 months!

You should render and record the video in a 16:10 aspect ratio, most of the video uses it after all, very good video.

Just got my deck this friday, and this was my exact same question, how would the bad ports run.. so the steam version of gta sa was the first thing i downloaded (which runs like crap on any modern pc) and i was surprised how well it runs. So far everything i've tried runs perfectly, couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Something I think you haven't realized is, the Steam Deck obviously runs Arch Linux and games run with Proton, so the so-called "DXVK fix" is already being utilized, as Proton uses DXVK itself by default, if it was instead using Wine's dxd9 implementation, I doubt you'd be getting more than 10fps. In short, DXVK is Linux software, "ported" to Windows, basically.

GTA IV was the first game I finished on the Steam Deck, ran like a dream and with a 40 FPS limit you can play quite a while without having to charge it.

I was really surprised when I got my SD and IV was running smooth out of the box, but to be fair, it has been 15 years - I guess we finally caught up to those system requirements. When the PC version of IV came out in late 2008, my then-new and decently powerful rig ran it terribly.

steam deck is genuinely the best way i've found to play saints row 2. there's a few graphics settings that solely tank the settings (like that terrible ingame antialiasing) also HDR is just the color filters so i'd totally recommend that on and ambient occulsion off cause that makes everything grey and plasticy

Can play pc games, but it's not out of this world or anything, the graphical and fps performance isn't wowza tier imo (30fps 720-800p (expect lower then that in anything remotely modern 2022+) even when comparing it to modern mobile games like asphalt 9, grid autosport, alien isolation, wreckfest ( pc games), genshin impact, kartrider drift etc.

It's actually absurd how well the deck does, even with modern games. I've played through the entirety of Cyberpunk, large chunks of hogwarts legacy, Forza Horizon 5 and more AAA games (FF VII remake, AC Oddysey, any of the PS4 ports - like HZD/GoW/... to name a few), which was mostly a good experience. Usually 30 FPS, but sometimes hitting 40 was possible, which is great when you set the screen refresh rate to 40 as well. With AAA games, the only issue really is the storage. While loading from SD cards is okay, installing or updating the games can take ages, even on a decent sd card. Upgrading the SSD is probably the better choice, if possible.

would you even need a dxvk patch for gta 4? it's running through proton so it should already be using dxvk
@gzaos Жыл бұрын
GTA 4 is my most played game on the deck, it was a struggle to mod it with all the remove music radio, but now it's perfect. Maybe in the future I will have the patience to install the pirated version and really mod it as it should. But for now I am happy with the steam version with restore music radio.
@airspeedmph Жыл бұрын
Not 100% sure, but judging from those black spots where reflections/windows/etc should be, you are playing the Linux port and not through DXVK. The Linux port was done by Virtual Programming and uses their proprietary tech. They also ported other several Saints Row releases. In any case, the port is basically the original Windows game with a compatibility layer on top, somewhat similar with what Proton does. One rather big difference in contrast to default Proton is that the old Linux port use OpenGL (there was no Vulkan at the time). So it would be interesting to see the difference between the two, Linux port vs Proton. There is another method to run old DirectX 9 games on Linux, using Gallium Nine, which is an open source implementation of said API, but is seldom used these days after D9VK/DXVK took off. Saint Row 2 in particular ran very well with it, but is more cumbersome to set up and use.

GTA 4 actually ran surprisingly well on the deck, although it just goes to show how better GTA 5 was optimized because it actually runs better lol. I have them both installed right now. Every once in a while I see weird lines across the screen for a split second at the time, but steam does say it has minor graphical glitches.

Just a word of caution for people that have GTAs purchased through Rockstar Social Club - the launchers do not play well with the steamdeck and will often ask you to log in etc with each run. If you rebuy the games through steam (which has oauth token instead of an password), then make sure you do not have the social club linked to your steam account - the games will refuse to run as you can only have one licence per account. It's manageable but you lose large portion of the ease of use the steamos UI offers.

Best purchase I've ever made,I've just bought max payne 3 for a fiver and it still stands up to any AAA title out there and plays amazing,the fact you can run red dead,cyberpunk,elden rings,god of war ect on a handheld device at a good frame rate and it looking phenomenal is amazing but to get one for just over £300 is just the cherry on the cake....

I got a Steam Deck on aforementioned the sale the other day, Doom runs very well on it! I think it's best for 2D/Older games, but most new AAA games will run fine at low graphics. Either way It's still impressive for a £300 handheld!
