Great series, a ton of well done research and detailed information on Steely Dan, especially for a newbie like me on this band. It must have taken you a lot of time and hard work to put these together, truly appreciated, thank you. And now, as usual, time for me to do my homework. Based on previous videos I did get 5 of those albums and all of the "good pressings", lucky me! and now on the hunt for the rest.

Another excellent video, many thanks Tim. Love the subtle nod to ‘Rikki don’t Lose that number’ in the background there - another cracking album! That audiophile version of ‘Gold’ looks cool, I bet that sounds great. My UK copy has a bonus four track 12” with it too - and sounds pretty darn good. I wish they’d done a new album to tour around 1993, wouldn’t that have been amazing. I strongly agree, I think ‘Two against nature’ and particularly ‘Everything must go’ are hugely underrated albums I was so pleased to pick those up and listen to them often - plus they are fantastic sounding records.

Your keeping my mail person busy Lol Need to pickup the Northeast Corridor. I’ve never seen Steely Dan Live but they are coming to the Xfinity Comcast Center in Mansfield MA in July which I picked up 2 VIP tickets for 50.00 each with no fees can’t believe it. Now hopefully I’ll have the courage to go with Covid? It’s an open air venue. Thank You Again!

I saw them again in London and during the concert some crazy guy in the audience jumped up on stage and ran all around the stage, jumping over all the cables and equipment. Walter Becker thought it was hilarious.

Good job with the series Tim. Ambitious work, to say the least. I love steely Dan as well and I’m only in my 30’s. My wife gets sick of me playing them, I love the music. I love the music more than the lyrics, there is barely anything better in rock/pop. It stands with the Beatles, Brian Wilson, Dylan, young, etc but darker without getting morose like so many other greats do. RIP Walter Becker Steely Dan doesn’t exist without you. Fagan recently did two nights in my area , but I’m not going at those prices sitting down nonetheless at without half the group.✌🏻

Greetings, Another fantastic part of the Steely Dan series. I learned a great deal about which pressings to look for. I'm fortunate to have very little in terms of Steely Dan vinyl. ...so I can really hunt down the good stuff. Oh and thanks to this series I was pleased to discover that my Canadian pressing of Gold used the same plates as the EU europa pressing you mentioned. ..it has the identical matrix info in the deadwax. Which explains why this pressing sounds so awesome. Keep up the great work. Mark Anthony K Projekt Gemineye

@@Universityofvinyl I liked both ‘08s LPs. I think I’m with you re the UHQRs although I did put them on my Christmas list. I do get a kick out of all the opinions of various vinyl releases - best pressing on mediocre equipment vs poor pressings on the million dollar system, which is best etc. LOL. I also like Giles Martin’s advice “forget the comparisons just listen to the music” but the comparisons are good fun. Thanks for yours.

Cheers Tim on the final chapter of one of rock and roll's most beloved bands in Steely Dan. It's very interesting how their two compilation records, namely, Greatest Hits and Gold don't have any overlap. That's a very rare thing as well as a nice selling point because we know so many bands overlap tracks like there's no tomorrow. Regarding Two Against Nature, Everything Must Go as well as the live record go these records have eluded my collection up until now but they're definitely on the radar thanks to your review, particularly concerning the audiophile quality of them. I had no idea that Two Against Nature had an analogue master tape copy to go with it. Wow, talk about thinking ahead ! Hopefully moving forward we'll see more live and studio recording of the band come out. I can't think of a more deserving band for the large-scale box-set treatment to be released than Steely Dan either. Cheers Tim and thanks again for the amazing detail and effort you put into this 3-part series. Good luck at the Denver record fair to come. On another topic Tim I'm curious if you could identify the model of that nice looking piece of McIntosh gear from your stereo. It appears to be a vintage receiver but I'd like to know the model # of it and you acquired it. Thanks ! Take care !

@jameschant2740
@jameschant2740 2 жыл бұрын
@@Universityofvinyl Well Tim, I got to say it looks like you got yourself one heck of vintage amplifier. As you said, this is an integrated amplifier. After doing a little bit of research on it there are some impressive qualities about it. The pre-amplification and amplification units are housed one above the other giving them an effective degree of separation and both are connected from the back with an RCA cord presumably. The circuit boards are absolutely robust and the unit weighs in at a hefty 34 lbs. Originally it sold for $ 700. The unit is rated at 70 watts per channel into 8 ohms. The unit was produced between 1972 and 1979. There are two versions of it. I suspect you have version 1 because yours has a wooden chassis. I wasn't able to pinpoint the particular video where you go into detail on the unit though. It's great to know that you're having a great time with this unit. Bravo !

I picked up both 2VN and EMG when they dropped on RSD. 2VN is one of the best sounding records I own, dead quiet and beautifully balanced. Unfortunately, my copy of EMG does not sound good! There's a whooshing kind of noise throughout a significant chunk of it, and it actually skips in a few places. I cleaned the record, re-adjusted my turntable arm, and tested other records and didn't have any similar problems, so I figured it had to be the copy of the record I had. Luckily the next day the record store actually had one last copy of EMG that had been picked up but decided not to get, and they let me swap it out for hat. Unluckily, it had the same exact sound quality problems and skips in the same places. I've seen a handful of other people on Facebook mention the same issues, so it sounds like there was a run of bad copies, and I don't know of any way to tell the difference between a good one and a bad one. BTW, I'm the guy who posted the video from that 1993 Nashville concert clip you included. Good news, I recently found an earlier generation copy of that video with much better picture quality, so I'll be posting an improved version sometime in the near future! I'm always working on improving the quality of any live recording I can of theirs and sharing it. Also, PLEASE do yourself a favor and give Walter's solo albums a fair shot. 11 Tracks of Whack is a bit of a shock since it has the lofi demo kind of quality to it, but it was a great way to differentiate himself from the Steely Dan sound to try something different. Circus Money has the more traditional full band approach and sounds stunning. Both albums, along with the demos/outtakes/etc. his estate posts regularly on walterbeckermedia.com really give you some insight into just how much he contributed to Steely Dan's sound. You can really pick up his brilliant lyrical tendencies and unexpected chord changes when you go back and listen to those SD records.
@Universityofvinyl
@Universityofvinyl 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, very nice to meet you here - hope you don't mind that I used that brief clip! I am going to give Circus Money a whirl; I actually think I have it somewhere on CD. RE the whooshing on EMG, I've read about it also and have noticed it in a few places on my LP but ONLY between songs thank God. Take care, Tim
@djbelc01
@djbelc01 2 жыл бұрын
@@Universityofvinyl Oh I don't mind at all. It's not like I'm making any money off the videos I'm doing or anything like that. It's a labor of love because I feel like their music is so special that the best quality versions of it possible deserve to be shared with everyone. As for EMG, I unfortunately can hear the whooshing even throughout the music, not just in the gaps. I'm still happy to have it for my collection with the nice big artwork compared to the CD, but still disappointing considering how much it cost even at retail.

a brilliant and informative set of Steely Dan videos...i really much appreciate your work...many thanks Tim. As an aside i saw the band at Wembley Arena back in '96. One of the new tracks (at the time) was Jack Of Speed a major highlight of the concert. However their version on Two Against Nature was a shadow of the live counterpart and, for me, is / was a symptom of the band's last 2 releases. Too lightweight and jazz 'loungy'. Some good music but needed a bit more 'ooomph'.

3 fantastic videos, I love your debt of knowledge of SD and the presentation was truly wonderful. I was really looking forward to Northeast Corridor and was thrilled with the setlist but to me it's ruined by a poor recording. It sounds in places as if there are socks over the mics and the audiences aren't into the concerts at all. It has the same feel for me as Live in America which is my least played SD record. Maybe it's because the studio recordings are so perfectly presented and well over half my music listening is to live recordings. Thanks again for putting up the videos.
