Very nice comparison, really highlights the difference -- the ST170 sounds like an electric guitar, the SM57 sounds like a microphone on an electric guitar.

Nice sounding mic. It would be a great choice for folks (like me) that have an audio interface that does not have phantom power that is switchable per input. Might have to pick one of those up. Acoustic recording would be nice to hear as well.

You're supposed to get one of those doo-hickeys that can hold both the ribbon AND the SM-57 and run them parallel into your Focusrite Scarlett.
@Skoora10 ай бұрын
Did you ever have issues trying to deal with phase issues when blending with the 57? I’ve used two mics for years, usually a 421, currently a condenser and a 57 but when I tried with the ST170, no matter how I placed the capsules in relation to each other I would get horrible phase cancellation. Not sure if it’s to do with the figure 8 pattern?
@tedc66942 жыл бұрын
Makes the 57 sound like the 57 has a pillowcase over it. More hugh end than i expected
@VIDS20136 ай бұрын
That's because the SM doesn't have much response above 10kHz.

I purchased this exact mic when it was greatly discounted at MF, but it was backordered for weeks and, after some research I realized that ribbon mics are not good first mics, so I cancelled it. Now that I know that it has a built in lightsaber, I deeply regret it...

Some inside info on sterling audio - they are owned by guitar center. When groove tubes went out of business they bought up all the old gt parts at crazy low prices and repurposed them into budget condenser mics (remember the st55?). Notoriously unreliable and they knew it but still gave bonuses to gc salespeople that sold a certain quota of them every month. Sad tale of the customer’s trust being degraded by pushing high profit margin gear that wasn’t industry standard to unsuspecting customers.
@landonbailey3 жыл бұрын
interesting! this has been a solid MIC. it's been my go to for all my videos since I got it

The recent Sterling mikes are very reliable and sound great. I have used a Sterling SP150 at my desk for Zoom calls since 2021. Dirt cheap, sounds like a much more expensive mic. No problems at all.
@Terry3Gs5 жыл бұрын
I think it has something to do with balancing your shakra's !! he he he he he ;) BUT I must say I like the Sterling for the overall sound ... the sm sounded muffled. And yes the converting customs & such sucks for bying from musicians friend .. i will say though $208 for the mighty mite neck I bought & refinished for my mim strat body was well worth it though vs my ebay & solo music purchases.

It makes little sense to compare the ST 170 with the SM57. The ST 179 costs well over twice as much as the SM57. Yet the SM 57 sounds essentially just as good. IMHO the SM 57 is a much better value.
