That was right here in Albany NY, I grew up here so it was awesome being a kid and still is when shows are in the local area. We had the January 19, 1992 Royal Rumble. October 22, 2000 No Mercy was when Stone Cold came back from a neck injury. Of course January 8, 2006 New Year's Revolution where Edge cashed in on Cena and we had a elimination chamber match here on that same PPV. We have the terrible honor of being the episode where Mike Foley introduced the 24/7 championship with Titus O’Neil becoming the inaugural champion and of course the infamous Beer Truck episode from Stone Cold

@@grellnoble1560 Because Shawn's style at the time was still all based on athleticism. He moved faster, jumped higher and could go full speed better than pretty much anyone in the locker room, prior to the Casket Match at the Royal Rumble. Austin's technical abilities, which at least we got to see for over a year in the WWF, was still ground based, enabling him to more easily and quickly adapt to a more brawling, "stomp a mudhole" style.

It would've obviously been great for Austin's neck to fully heal, but I'd still want him wrestling as a brawler regardless. Far better for the Stone Cold character to just punch & kick the shit out of his opponent than have a mat wrestling contest. HBK's back injury really held him back for this match unfortunately and it's a shame that by the time he came back, Austin's neck issues had already effectively ended his career

@@jp3813 Listen to Bret and Shawn’s 2011 interview with Jim Ross. The day of Survivor Series in Montreal Bret and Shawn were going through the match piece by piece, spot by spot. After discussing the match they had a conversation about respect and both guys talked out how things have spiraled out of control between them and how they didn’t mean for things to become so bad between them. It was the longest they had spoken to each other since WrestleMania XII in 1996. They had a long talk that Shawn was not expecting to have. In many ways they had buried the hatchet just hours before the match in Montreal. This conversation upset Shawn because the whole time he knew what he was about to do to Bret. It had already been set up. That’s one of the things that people don’t know. That’s why Bret had so much hatred for Shawn in the years following Survivor Series. Shawn looked him in the eye and told him that he could trust him in the ring.

I've always thought that the Dumpster Match was underrated & underused. It's a good excuse to have a Casket Match that doesn't involve the Undertaker. Plus, not only is the container big enough to fit tag teams and random weapons, but it's also mobile enough to relocate the action around the arena. Heck, a lock bar can also be used to emphasize the win.

(If you attended a house show you got access to a presale, so it was relatively easy to snag decent seats. Michaels spat in my face after making fun of myself and my girlfriend on the mic at the house show, too.) Michaels got a hell of an ovation as he limped to the back with the help of Hunter and Chyna....not sure if that's ever made it to any video packages...

As we already know, after dropping the gold to Austin here, the next time HBK would pop up on TV is in a brief summer stint as a guest commentator on Raw four months later, before becoming the WWF Commissioner at the end of the year. It was nice of WWF to try and find things for HBK to do, but it's kind of similar to what happened with Daniel Bryan during his two years away from the ring when he became SmackDown General Manager in 2016. The big difference is these fly-in visits as guest commentator and WWF Commissioner didn't help HBK's then-mental state. By contrast, D-Bry enjoyed his role as SmackDown GM.

Austin, apparently, hated the quality of his match here with Shawn Michaels. In a couple of interviews and podcasts, Austin recalls that when he met up with Vince McMahon backstage afterwards, he told Vince _" that match was the drizzlin' s***s."_ McMahon, however, told him not to worry about it, and that business would get even better from there on in. For once, Vince was right. Just 2 weeks later, and after losing for the better part of 2 years, Raw would finally start beating WCW Nitro in the ratings. The rest, as they say, is history. Also, aside from one UK-based event called 'Mayhem in Manchester' shortly afterwards, WM14 was pretty much the swansong for the New Generation logo. By the next PPV, Unforgiven: In Your House (I believe), the Attitude-era scatch logo (aka: the sworn enemy of the World Wildlife Fund) had pretty much taken over all visual branding in the company, microphones, ring aprons, etc.

Eric Bischoff: Steve Austin? That guy wouldn’t be a draw! He can get the heck outta WCW, he won’t be worth anything! My biggest problem with the main event was that there was no reason for Tyson to turn on Shawn or dx, especially with a fast count. I wish they had a spot where either Shawn accidentally hit Tyson or maybe he starts trying to boss Tyson around so that it would make sense for Tyson to make that count at the end. It all worked out obviously due to Austin's popularity and also I think there was an element of Shawn starting to get go away heat at this time
@mskerr187
@mskerr187 Жыл бұрын
I think the message was supposed to be that Tyson was always really with Austin and they outsmarted DX. I also don’t think it was supposed to be a fast count, it was just the Tyson didn’t know any better.
@Michael-cz6ob
@Michael-cz6ob Жыл бұрын
So true. I've been saying it for years that I think Shawn had something to do with Tyson doing that fast count to make Austins win look weak and confusing. I was never expecting Shawn to actually lose clean to Austin with a normal referee performing a clean 3 count so my guess is it was his idea to have Tyson randomly do it and probably told him on the side to count quickly. (I could be wrong tho) But just look at the crowds reaction.. most of them are so confused with what's happening and don't even have chance to count along or get a big pop together for Austins big win
@dunnwell7780
@dunnwell7780 Жыл бұрын
I can't see Tyson doing that for Shawn, he'd apparently been told not to put the shirt over Shawn's face due to the signal this would send out. Why do a fast count to make Shawn look good, then bury him by putting the 3:16 shirt over him?
@mskerr187
@mskerr187 Жыл бұрын
@@Michael-cz6ob I could be wrong, but I don't think that's the case. Shawn stays flat on his back, not moving for a long time after the 3 count selling the Stunner, so fast count or not, he sold being beaten fairly. I think Tyson just got all hyped up and counted faster than he should have.
@Michael-cz6ob
@Michael-cz6ob Жыл бұрын
@@mskerr187 Maybe like I said I could be wrong but just with Shawn's behaviour back then you just don't know what strings he would pull. Again it's a shame they went with tyson making the pin regardless. Should have just had a normal referee do it instead to avoid any confusion and make the win look better

I think Owen suffered from HBK breaking his back. He probably woulda looked stronger during the build and went over in this match but they needed to elevate HHH and make him look strong when he took over as the new leader of DX after Mania.
@melasnexperience
@melasnexperience Жыл бұрын
I don't know... it felt like they were spite-booking him, so I don't think just losing HBK was what hurt him. Between him not getting along with Austin (which... yeah, fair) and not being one of the boss's boys, he was used as a squash mash/quick humiliation match even before that. Vince was really keeping him on the roster out of spite at that point.
@TiVo67
@TiVo67 Жыл бұрын
@@melasnexperience he was being used well but HHH got hurt for a bit and HBK was still involved with Taker so they kinda didn’t have anything for him. Then once the feud got going again HBK was hurt so they had to pivot to make HHH come out looking strong. And yeah, he had no hopes of climbing the ladder to main event status cuz Austin was never gonna work with him. So he was pretty much screwed. But had HBK remained healthy I could see Owen going over at Mania and then working a program with Shawn afterwards.

Gennifer Flowers is a striking example of the WWF being years behind the pop culture times, at the very same time as perhaps the most successful use of celebrity in company history. Hard to imagine it would have appealed to anyone if the McMahons were not Republican partisans, and no reason to remember it except...was that really the first "if ya smell"? I would have thought there was at least one Raw promo preceding this! 100% agreed about Luna. She really shines here.
