chuukese stick dance and other dances represent our ways of surviving in the past until now.....some culturs are already forgotten. people we must update bring the past to teach our youngsters.

I love stick dancing it's something we Micronesians do. It explains the way we had to survive and I'm from chuuk. I was born and raised there and know I'm in Appleton Wisconsin stick dancing to show my pride and respect of being a Micronesia. check it out on Facebook just search up Gracelo Tekkey and look at the video we did thanks. ;-)

Beautiful culture n dances! my question however is other than kiribati r hip dances native to chuuk? How bout other micronesian islands. I also notice the similarities of chants with main island yapese n the satawalese. Keep up the gud work n preserve this wonderful culture!
@zurieljoker89994 жыл бұрын
Satawal people are actually chuuk descendants from pattiw region to be more specific, but its in yap territory thats why they say its an outter island of yap, but even when they speak it similar with chuukese language.

Yea Satawal just come to yap to copy their culture and go cause they hav no culture

I know I’m 12 years late to reply, but yes, hip dances are native to Chuuk as well lol. They call it “nek”. Not sure about the other Micronesian islands tho.

@@uts4448 that's fine! You weren't too late! These dances are so cool! I'm an anthropology major and me independently studying Pacific cultures for so long, ive been greatly captived. There used to be a Micronesian forum online up until a few years ago. This forum contained a lot of wealthy info on Micronesian history, because so many people from various Micronesian cultures still retained oral history and would just randomly ask whatever questions that were presented. Do you know of any similar forums?
@uts44482 жыл бұрын
@@lerinhar Wow! Interesting I know exactly what forum you're talking about. That's also the place where I got my information on stuff like clans in different Micronesian islands, but i apology, I don't know any other forums (if there were any). I know I've seen some information about some of our islands from Germans like Augustin Kramer. He went into depth about some of our islands and the old culture. It's just everything is in German (I just use google translate lol). But wow, you must know A LOT about the different cultures if you been studying the Pacific cultures for a while. And I agree with your comment that you made 12 years ago. We have to preserve our culture.

It wasn't an assumption. The stick dance group is made up of a bunch of kids from a small town called Lewi in Nett, Pohnpei. The man who taught these guys is from Kuttu, Chuuk. The video is from 1999.
@MwLiera5 жыл бұрын
FYI, this was not in PNI and I hope those kids from Nett who u say are performing the stick dance have Fanapi roots in Chuuk!!! If not, that's cultural appropriation and I have a huge problem with that!!! I know for a fact that some micros make it a habit to perform dances from islands other than their own and try to pass it off as their own #FAIL! How about performing your own and not ripping off other ppls culture? As a Micronesian who was raised in Polynesia, I cringe when I see Micronesians butchering Polynesian dances at public events 🙄 . Have some pride in your own culture and do your own dances, pls!!! 👎

Love Luv, Are you talking about the stick dance? They didn’t steal it from another culture..it’s called tokia
@santospaul81032 жыл бұрын
@@MwLiera let’s not say cultural appropriation because if you go far back you will see that we are all one people. There are clans in Chuuk that originated from Pohnpei and there are clans in Pohnpei that originated from Chuuk. Chuuk and Pohnpei are apart of the same country 🇫🇲 so the sharing of culture nowadays isn’t something that should be looked down upon when they’re all siblings

Pohnpeians do stick dance to
@zurieljoker89994 жыл бұрын
Those pohnpeians might have fanapi blood which is chuuk mortluck islands, stick dance or tokia is from the outter islands because long ago they always had war between each islands so this is their war dance.
@santospaul81032 жыл бұрын
@@zurieljoker8999 I don’t doubt what you’re saying but Pohnpeian stick dances aren’t always necessarily a result of Chuukese influence. Every island in Micronesia has stick dances from Guam to Kiribati. I think it just shows how we are all one people and have more in common then our differences🤷🏽♂️
