Sheela Banerjee's parents gave her a typical English name to feel safe. Sheela Banerjee pulled the threads and found out her parents, with other people, had mass migrated to England. She found out that the British had anglicised her surname because they couldn't pronounce it or couldn't be bothered to pronounce it. Sheela felt that her anglicised surname was tricky to use because of its association with colonialism and oppression.

We have the same culture in Taiwan. Even though we haven't colonized by English-speaking countries in history, some of them think that having an English name is a cool thing. (By the way, my English name is Phoebe, which has the meaning of the Greek goddess of the moon.)

My name comes from a Spanish area called the Basque country where there is another language apart from Spanish which is named "euskera". In this language it means mine or my. Nevertheless, there are others who suggest that its origin is Greek and it's related to the god of the sea daughters, therefore I can choose 😅.

During the typical mass migration, it can be tricky to anglicise one's identity while trying to pull the threads of cultural heritage when some individuals simply can't be bothered.

thanks BBC My summary while listening Our name is an important part of our identity. If you hear someone shout your name in the street, you automatically turn to look but names also reveal cultural and family connections which give us a sense of our history and our place in the world. In this program, we'll be meeting a writer whose name combines two very different sides of her identity, one English and the other Indian - Sheela Banerjee. According to Sheela, she has the name Sheela which is a typical English name for a girl. When she pulls the threads, they lead her to the story of her Bengali parents's migration to England and mass migration from the colonies after the war to England. All these stories also involve colonialism and caste. More from Sheela, her surname is Banerjee which is an Indian name but it's not her real name since Banerjee is an anglicized form of her original name which would have been "Bandyopadhyay" which was changed by the British. They basically couldn't be bothered to pronounce it or couldn't pronounce it. For her, it's always a mixed name because it signifies that her family were colonial subjects so it's a tricky name to carry around.

In many Chinese-speaking countries, there is a unique culture that almost everybody has an English name. The reason why they do this is because they think that foreigners might have difficulties reading Chinese names. Also, some of them think that having an English name is a cool thing.

Beth says"She may have had a typical English name, but with dark skin and hair, Sheela didn't look like some people's image of a typical English girl".I condemn her above comments which are racist. When God made every human of flesh and blood, why some people feel themselves to be superior and look down on others as inferior creatures. I wish the BBC withdrew such controversial comments unconditionally
