ah man, i chuckled when Curbs said he didnt watch the last penalty, i was about 9 years old in one of the corners and i had to look away too! When we did it again in 2019 i was celebrating for days. great memories!

I was there that day as a young 7 year old sunderland fan. All i remember was the long coach journey home talking with my dad to cheer me up, he failed but i always remember his last words as we got off the bus, keep been positive, move forward and next season we will win the league. Turned out he was right and my love for the beautiful game started after the saddest day in the old wembley stadium.

I remember this game like yesterday. I'm a Newcastle fan but it's one of those contests even I felt sorry for Sunderland. I love sport and it's one of those rare occasions where nobody deserves to lose. A cruel fact of sport there has to be a loser. I remember the pain etched in Alan Curbishly's face.

As a safc fan it was cruel bit it was also a blessing because after that day this squad of players had the motivation to win the league the following season and we had a brilliant 2 years after that which has never been matched since the greatest game I’ve seen Sunderland involved which resulted in a loss
