I absolutely adore this hymn. I learnt it at my school and it has helped me through some dark times. May God continue to bless this hymn so that it can comfort many & lead people to Christ.

I love this hymn. I sang it in a state competition and won 1st place. When I first learned of the hymn and read the words I began to cry only later to understand it's meaning and the writer's reasoning for penning this hymn. Lead Kindly Light will always be dear to my heart.

Thank you Carla for this wonderful and inspiring story of the hymn "Lead, Kindly Light" Before writing further, I wish you a blessed and joyful feast of Cardinal John Henry Newman whose feast it is today. 9th October. I have always dearly loved this man who is now a saint-his brilliant mind and his long and enduring search for the Truth. How I love his hymn which as you said is quite famous throughout the world. God bless you and a blessing too from St. John Henry.

Many thanks for telling the story behind the hymn 'Lead kindly light'. This hymn has been my favourite hymn since my young life while I was at school where we we first sung. The words and the phrases used captured my heart that I learnt the whole song by heart and the memory of those days are still with me.

@@carlacarmichael2978 I highly apreciate your response dear Clara.I am now 86 years old and Istill love the words and phrases .Having done some difficult poems in English Literature as part of the subects makes me apriciate the songs more grasp to spiritual context. Think of the poems like "the Hound of Heaven or "the Grammarian's Funerial and some others . May God bless you.

@@gurmanshergill5363 Oh...may God bless you too my friend. Yes...I have heard "The Hound of Heaven" before. I'm so glad that you still enjoy the old hymns and poems as I do also! When I was 11 years old, my Dad bought me a second-hand piano...and a 25 cent "Army/Navy hymnal" from Salvation Army. Hymns were the first things I learned to play (Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus being the first one I mastered!) and they are still my favorite songs to play these many years later. I still love to sing the verses along as I play...though my voice is not as strong as in times past...but the Bible says "make a joyful noise unto the Lord"...so my feeble efforts still count, right? So nice hearing again from you...and I hope your Christmas season is a special and joyous one for you. Carla

I wonder how these hymes would sound in today's language. If it would change the meaning or make sound more relatable. I find it hard for me comprehend when things are written in language not used today. I gotta a bible app so wonder if I can find this in it. Thank u for this sis.

When I read older hymns, I remind myself that they were written as poems or verse first...then later music was added to turn them into songs. And yes, your're so right, the older useages of language can throw us all a bit. But I learned in school to read each poem...not in a "rhyming" way...but as sentences between the punctuation marks...and breaking it down that way really does make understanding it easier. Also where the words are "contracted"...like "th'encircling gloom"...I actually fill the phrase out to "the encircling gloom" when I read it. I learned that little technique for reading some of the more difficult parts of Scripture...and things like Shakespeare and other ancient writers. I actually prefer to read poetry rather than straight literature. The sing/song nature of how it is written appeals to the music-side of me! I hope this helps Hon.
