What a splendid and classic introduction to the Halloween season. I went monster in movies and books last year. This year I will go Gothic. The lovely damsel/heroine walking down the stone steps of the castle at midnight, holding aloft a candelabra investigating a strange sound.

Interesting that the “N is a Nightmare” picture shows the clock’s hands at 3:00. According to an Ingmar Bergman film, the hour between 3 and 4 a.m. is “the hour of the wolf,” the time when most babies are born, most old people die, and people wake up from nightmares. (Since learning that, I’ve always checked the clock whenever I awoke from a nightmare. The vast majority occur between 3 and 4 a.m.)
