The word "save" is a loose translation and has many christian connotations some find confusing. San Seuhn, the Korean buddha master word "save" in the Heart Sutra has lately been translated as "liberate" or "help."

Animals have no blessings to see Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Even we humans cannot see bodhisattvas unless we practice. Animals don't know how to practice, and they don't understand Buddhism either. But we humans can save it, how? It is we who recite the Buddha's name to them.

Because karma of a sentient being cannot be changed unless it suffers through it or develops compassion. No Buddha or a bodhissatva can change karma, unless the being is willing to change. By invoking the name of a bodhissatva u acknowledge this compassion. In their previous lives, those animals were the ones who out of ignorance, commited bad deeds towards others. In the next cycle, those who now kill them for food will be killed as food. The cycle will never break untill a being decides to do it and is at best, reborn as a human being, who can encounter the Buddhas teaching.

Amitabha Buddha is a king, he has two sons, the two sons are now Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthama Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva can manifest as male or female. In order to save sentient beings, he can transform into various forms, and even become Jesus. Both Buddhists and non-Buddhists are equal.
