Dok Yakhdeez: The Epic Story of Romance & Cavalry in Northern Pakistan
Music Credit: Ali Zuhoor Khan Sb (Late)
Dok Yakhdeez is an epic story of romance and cavalry in the folk history of Chitral, northern Pakistan. It originated in the early 18th century from village Yakhdeez in the Torkhow valley, Upper Chitral.
By having a close look, it looks like the story unfolded when the Khushwaqt dynasty ruled over the Gilgit region, and it was a crucial time to defend the borders back then and hence compulsory for each citizen to render voluntary service. That is how the young man from village Dok Yakhdeez proceeded for one year to Yarkand as part of the cavalry.
He journeys to Yarkand reluctantly and gets discouraged along the way, obviously thinking about his heroine. He meets allies and confronts adversaries, gains tools, and returns with full wisdom and trust in himself to share the story. The story also highlights conflicts with various elements in the socio-cultural setup and the hero turns out to be triumphant at the end.
The story has a happy ending, and the plot is not very complicated but calls for an arduous role on the part of the hero and heroine, both have full trust in each other and do not lose hope till the eleventh hour.
It is sheer miracle and perhaps the willpower that the hero overcomes fatal diseases, gets healthy, and returns to join his heroine, and both live together in a successful matrimonial life ever after. Thus, the story turns out for the best for the main protagonists while the villains or antagonists are defeated.
It also underpins the power of love for strengthening the willpower of both the hero and heroine in overcoming the challenges with associated with soldiery, hunger, diseases, stress, and so on.
The story has been derived from Persian literature praising men not only for their roles as powerful kings, commanders, and brave warriors but also for their masculine beauty, chivalry, horsemanship, and their parts in the fervid romances. In similar stories of Persian literature, protagonists frequently tell stories of feasts and feats like that of Dok Yakhdeez.
