​@threesixesinarow8265 there is a little more to it. For one, mixtapes were sold on street and those dealers made a good living doing so. While short lived, it was easy. I bought so many while on the train. If you ordered online, you had to pay 1-3 bucks as a fee. Either way, someone made money off of other people's copyrighted material. You could put your entourage to work instead of paying for them. Second, I can't think of a better marketing plan for an upcoming rapper. Instead of relying on BS A&Rs and the marketing dept of record labels, you could reach the suburbs and rural America without spending needlessly. Mixtapes definitely put the nail into the coffin for record companies. Do you remember 1993? Dres the chronic cost 22 bucks at Sam goody. That's 33 bucks today. Dre didn't get 22 bucks per album. He got maybe 5 bucks per sale. Made MTV irrelevant for music.
