Күн бұрын

A retrospective look at the STRANGE parallels of both Elvis and Led Zeppelin's 1977 US Tour. The King and The British Kings followed similar paths and Peter Grant got help from Colonel Tom Parker himself. There are several connections between these two gigantic artists of the 70s. Musical performances that made them the hottest concert ticket in America are surrounded by coincidences in the competitive market of one the busiest concert calendars ever, from Fleetwood Mac to Emerson Lake and Palmer, so much to tell, let's go back in time to the year of Star Wars and Band Wars. #ledzeppelin #elvispresley #jimmypage #johnpauljones #robertplant

A fresh approach - well done. As a Zep fanatic since '74, one thing grates on me to no end - the constant slagging of Presence. I can't think of another album - from any band - where the release of pent-up force and power explodes off the tracks like this. Not as raw as the first two albums and not as eclectic as the other three, but it's a statement of "where they were" at that time - and that was not a good time at all, the lowest in the band's career except for post Bonzo death. My high school clique was blown away by all of it - the guitar orchestrations on Achilles (13 guitar tracks) and Nobody's Fault (3 for just the melodic opening riff) with great, classic Page riffs elsewhere, the deep sorrow of the lyrics of Tea For One (plus the heart-wrenching guitar solo), the great riffs from the riff master on the rest of the tracks, JPJ's modern Alembic sound, and... BONZO! Go back and listen to Presence paying as much attention as possible to Bonham on every track - I actually can make a case that it is his best work EVER. On top of his killer tone, feel and timing, add in tremendous performances of odd time signatures and weirdly timed stop and go patterns.

Amazing! The first time I heard a theremin being played was justly with Led Zeppelin. "Whole Lotta Love", to be more exact. I remember, when I was a kid, I heard some strange noises on "Whole Lotta Love". And after a LONG time, when I was already an teenager, I discover that that "strange noises" was Jimmy Page managing the theremin.

Jose, I was a huge Zeppelin fan growing up, in 1969 at the age of 5 my brother handed me my first real 45 rpm record, Whole Lotta Love and Heartbreaker/ Living Loving Maid. My brother was 11 years older and had a huge influence on what music I heard. In Jr. High school I knew everything that there was to know about Zeppelin and I got the see the Presence Tour on July 23 1977 in Oakland, CA. My sister bought the tickets and my brother and sister took me to that show. The stage looked like Stonehenge. I was supposed to see Zeppelin in 1975 but Plant's accident canceled the second leg of the Physical Graffiti tour. Zeppelin was my band and now I am older almost 59 years old. You're the best and I thank you for your hard work and put out these videos that brings back memories from a time long ago. Is there any band better than Led Zeppelin, no and there never will be.

@JCM - Led Zeppelin Stories It's actually very cool in the Bay Area it was around 75 degrees that summer day. Seeing a young Judas Priest was ok they became something different a few years later. Rick Derringer put on a good show. The Zeppelin show was good but you could see that something was up. Bonham and Grant beat the crap out of one of Bill Grahams employees. I heard about it after the show on the radio.

Yes Elvis was overworked beyond belief. Shorter performances compared to Zepp? Yes but...the level of pressure a solo artist has nevermind the King. Listening to many bootlegs i was amazed at the loud cheering to his every move and his Voice.....talk about Consistency, he always delivered. Such a crime that his manager gambled so much money at Elvis' expense. Damn it! Sure thing on the episodes needing to be rewatched. I feel you, it was quite a maze working out the script hehe. JCM, the biggest selling albums of 1977 according to Billboard was Rumours by Fleetwood Mac and Hotel California by The Eagles. Saturday Night Fever qualified for 1978 despite its December, 1977 release. Hotel California sold more than Bat Out of Hell in the US alone and sold more than Back In Black from AC/DC in the States. I know the first three songs on Hotel California got tons of radio play but the rest of the album doesn't suffer from burnout factor especially Wasted Time, Victim of Love and The Last Resort (my three favorite songs on the album).

Billboard cannot be your only reference, you need to include other markets. I can understand why they would say Rumours, but nope, it was overall the Bat out of Hell unfortunately. And trust me, i would pick Rumours of Hotel California anyday!

This is stellar work my friend!! Would like to point out how incredible it was that Zep was selling out arenas in three hours back then. Unlike today when a concert sells out fast and folks go online to get their tickets, back then fans would line up at a ticket outlet for days. Waiting for them to go on sale to ensure great seats, wasn't uncommon for a huge band like Zeppelin, Floyd or Who, people would camp out for a week inline waiting for the booth to open at 10am when ticket sales started on that special day. Limits of 2 tickets per person usual and thousands in line in hopes of getting theirs. When truly picturing it, (or remembering being in those lineups) one can only conceive how incredible a sell out that fast was. This is your best work yet imo. A different angle not done before to my knowledge in such depth. Well done and thank-you! Cheers!!

Excellent video as always! I'm with you on why Meatloaf's "Bat Out of Hell" became so popular. Never could stand Meatloaf and never will. The Elvis - Led Zep connection is an interesting one for sure. A long time ago, when I was a kid, I got to meet JD Sumner, a gospel singer who was in the Guiness Book of World Records as having the lowest bass voice. He was also a personal friend and mentor of Elvis. This was years after Elvis's death, and I remember him saying how deeply he still felt the hurt of losing his friend. Back then there were still snickers among kids about how Elvis was found dead while sitting on the toilet, but after hearing Mr. Sumner speak about it and being able to see the pain in his eyes, those jokes lost all humor. Anyways, nothing really to do with this video, just my own "Six Degrees of Separation" from The King.

I still think the MeatLoaf effect was a bit fabricated by the label or PR people. I was so excited to get the album years ago and then, what a tough listen that was. The playing is great but the concept, damn it. I agree with you, i hate most jokes on Elvis, because people forget his stardom, his stature as The King, people can be mean and with time, we see he suffered and always gave it all on stage, he was a Professional. Nice story on your six degrees of separation. I appreciate it! Thank you very much for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 premieres next saturday June 10th!

I remember buying Bat Out Of Hell when it came out. It was amazing, everyone at school was talking about it, I'm trying to put my finger on it, what was so different about it. I guess it was the production values. Maybe corporate rock marketing. In Australia Meatloaf toured and it was on the news, the Hell's Angels giving him a motorcycle escort from the airport. The motorbike guitar was a talking point. I guess none of the other songs are ground breaking. I think it's quite an even album. Paradise By The Dashboard Light will light up a party in Australia for those of us of a certain age!

He keeps saying Presences was a flop, it was #1 In both the US & UK and went triple platinum. Obviously, not LZ's biggest seller but hardly a flop. I was about 15 or 16 then and it was definitely the album everyone in my age group were talking about.

I am not saying it was a flop, but the sales figures dropped. I researched the numbers for my Making of Presence 2 episode - series. I personally love the album. The sales figures past the release matter, and well, it wasn't as successful as The Song Remains The Same. Please be aware i have a lot of respect and admiration for the band.

Led Zeppelin III sold fewer copies initially. Presence sold more initially than III but III grew in stature whereas Presence (which is my favorite Zeppelin album) sales curtailed after a while. Presence in fact was my first Zeppelin album at age 9 in November, 1985 (my older sister had 2 and 4 already) and In Through the Out Door was my second then Coda, Houses (Christmas 1985), Physical, Song Remains (10th birthday via my dad), III, II and IV (own copies after my older sister got angry with me permanently borrowing her copies) and I was my last at Christmas 1986. Plus I got The Firm Mean Business in 1986 when it was new and the first two Robert Plant solo albums for my 10th birthday plus the Bad Company original lineup albums AKA The Swan Song Years with S/T, Desolation Angels, Straight Shooter, Rough Diamonds, Run With the Pack and Burnin Sky in that order then Fame and Fortune which was eh. I was no fan of Brian Howe era after a while. The original foursome on the other hand, CLASSIC!

Regarding Ten Years Gone (26:25)....It's true that the guitar part could get kind of wobbly and protracted during that tour, but we might consider that the studio track was recorded with the Olympic White '61 Strat (which somehow got temporarily traded to JPJ for a banjo??), while the '77 tour employed the new B-Bender Tele which initially had the maple neck, later rosewood. It seems JP was coming to terms with the B-Bender, working it out onstage, which is pretty ballsy, but typical JP. RP and JP were big fans of William Blake, who famously said "You never know what is enough unless you know what is more than enough".

Jose great job on this and idea. Love the connection you have made here. I am a fan of the 1977 tour and the recordings that exist. My uncle was at the Chicago show when Page collapsed and then cancelled the rest of the show. Sadly the rescheduled show never happened. 1977 was the year that Rock music was challenged with Punk and Disco. A big turning point definitely and with the death of Elivs , Led Zeppelin abrupt halt and the crash of the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane really gave a blow to to rock. Looking forward to the next episode. thanks for the work you do.

Parker was a perfect example of a Great White Shark - not only hunting down its prey but in this case exploiting its prey for his own personal gain. I saw the tour dates throughout this video. They’re sickening to say the very least. Not one freakin day off for relaxation or a travel day. I often wonder if Elvis had any say in this booking strategy. Maybe he wanted it that way. In the Elvis On Tour DVD Elvis comments himself that “every night there’s a new crowd out there and we’ve got to win them over…I’m never comfortable before a show and I’m sure my band is never too comfortable either.” He kept everyone on their toes. It’s very sad to watch his ending unfold before our very eyes. Vern should have kidnapped his son to an undisclosed location and got him rested and freed from the drug grip. PS: once again Jose, your background music is PHENOMENAL here.

Hey man! Nice to read you, happy Sunday! You are absolutely right on the touring dates being sickening, when i got these i thought, this is not a professional tour, this is like going from one fair to the other. Vernon Presley just didn't have the character type to pull a rescue like that, as much as he wanted to. What puzzles me is NO one in power in the U.S saved the King you know? You needed wealth and political power to release Elvis from Parker's dictatorship really. Thank you very much for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 of 2 premieres June 10th.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories My compliments to you, Jose. 👏👏👏👏⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ If I were to expound I'd be repeating Lonnie's sentiments. I will soundly concur & echoe what Lonnie & so many others have said regarding your work. It is tremendous. Your passion and dedication to musical & cultural history is something to be celebrated. Your own considerably accomplished musical chops puts you in a safe place where viewers can trust what you are doing here. Overall, I'd say you are a bit of a savant, with no trace of any associated impairment. To think you were a child of the 80s, yet are documenting the massive history of Rock, as related to LZ, via tremendous research thru these lush, evocative productions...well it blows my mind and inspires. As a teen in the 70's I grew into myself thru that amazingly prolific musical decade. An older brother had earlier exposed me to Procol Harum, Ten Years After, Tommy James & the Shondells, The Doors, Black Sabbath, CCR, CSNY, others & of course The Beatles. I vaguely remember seeing them on the Ed Sullivan Show. Elvis was a phenomenon my parents experienced; although I have some rather vivid childhood memories of the big stereo phonograph in the living room sending out Elvis music and my young beautiful mom singing along. Happy carefree times! We'd dine at our favorite restaurant and I loved the little tabletop jukebox from which mom would select "Are You Lonesome Tonight" or any other Elvis song du jour. So, unknowingly his voice played as an early soundtrack to my life, giving me a love of voice. His voice was beautiful. His range was wide, power & control always present.

cont'd I would learn decades later the breadth of his talents and depth of his heart. NOONE, absolutely no one ever has a cross word to say about the man. He was loved round the world yet never played outside the States; part of the reason for his early demise. In the mid 70's I was into Pink Floyd, King Crimson, ELO, Manfred Mann, Steely Dan, YES, ELP, Alan Parsons, Genesis, Deep Purple/Rainbow, Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, EJ....and the list goes on. My top three being: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Elton John, with ELO not far behind. I became interested in Elvis more seriously only 3-4 years ago. I have to say, studying his short 22 year musical trajectory has been revelatory. There will never be another human being possessing Elvis' luminescent ethereally beautiful yet deeply masculine looks, his commanding form & posture, his swagger, his magnetism, his humility, humor, his dedication to craft i.e., professionalism and that pitch perfect voice. He broke segregation barriers & brought on a massive cultural shift. Elvis caused a cultural earthquake, leaving conservatives shaking & resistant. He gave his life to the world - not only his fans - but to every person, friend, stranger that asked or didn't ask anything of him. His enormous loving, kind & generous heart and immense aura left a definite impression on everyone he encountered. They say you felt Elvis' energy enter the room before even seeing him. His energy vibe was that electrifying; other-wordly. He was terribly used by everyone in his life with the exception of his mother. period. Even his rather shiftless father misused Elvis, even his calculating wife, his inner circle (MM) & all love interests used Elvis. That disgusting rube of a Carny-barker manager had no clue as to how to artistically nurture & direct the rare, exotic being he contracted to manage: Elvis' first lethal misstep that would prove instrumental to his undoing. Within 22 trailblazing years the man was used up and left to disintegrate before all eyes. Elvis' life was a triumph and a tragedy. Over 80,000 people converged into Memphis upon his untimely death. Florists across the state of Tennessee ran out of flowers. In fact the most flowers sold in US history was the day after E died. It took 100 vans five hours to transport mourner's flowers from Graceland to the Cemetery. His procession had seventeen white limos, many having been sent from from nearby States. Sadly, people my age in the 1970's viewed Elvis as a caricature or as Robert said, "a self parody". If anyone wants to dip their toes into Elvis at his Zenith, watch all the outtakes of his '68 Special. Nothing could top his 1968 tv special or his 1970 Vegas engagement at the International Hotel. I know we are all here to celebrate the Mighty Zepp but I had to come out from the woodwork to offer my insignificant perspective re: these halcyon days parallel to The King. Robert can be pompous at times but the respect he gave to Elvis speaks volumes as to his integrity.

Yeah the movie sucks, but it is an accurate account of Parker's legal situation. I know that he could not leave the US because he had falsified documents in order to keep a valid visa, and the State Department told him that if he left the US while his case was under review, they would not let him back in. He could not go to Europe because he had gone awol from the military. I don't think the comparison between Grant and Parker (mentioned in the video) was accurate. Grant made sure that the members of Zeppelin got PAID, Parker ripped off Elvis for millions! When Elvis died he had less than 1 million in the bank. Elvis played Vegas for all those years because Parker was a gambling addict, and he would lose advance money as soon as he got it. Parker, was a top shelf POS! Priscilla was the one that turned Elvis's estate into a money making machine. Before Parker died she told him that she would not sue him, if he accepted a buy-out and surrendered all his control over Elvis's music and image rights. He had no choice, she bought him out for a hundred thousand! That estate today, makes millions in merchandising and record sales! Parker was a complete scum bag!

Once again you nailed it Jose! I'm not exactly an Elvis fan but I recognize his importance in music, how he broke taboos with his dancing (Elvis The Pelvis), amazing voice, incendiary presence on stage. Fans only see one side of their idols' lives, they forget that they are human. The greed of businessmen and the public's avidity lead anyone to exhaustion and together with a disorderly life (physical and mental stress, poor diet, drugs and alcohol, among other things). It's a real miracle to see how many are still with us…Elvis' musical legacy is indisputable. I won't talk about Zeppelin, my passion for them makes me suspect to give opinions…thanks for this great job, I look forward to the next episode 😊 (I remember reading somewhere that American TV only showed Elvis from the waist up because his way of dancing was considered “immoral”, I don’t know if that’s true)

John Bindon was not a gentle cat. There's a very interesting documentary about John "Biffo" Bindon here in KZbin centering around his acting career, his relationship with Princess Margaret, and his eventual security work on Zeppelin's '77 tour and the assault in Oakland with Warren Grant, Bonzo, Peter G., and Bill Graham's man, John M. It goes on to explain how John Bindon passed away alone in a tiny Earl's Court flat from AIDS. Great stuff here, Jose. As always. Hello from Seattle. Did you look into Zeppelin's Hammerwood Estate? They intended to make it into their own Headley Grange but the upkeep costs were just too much. But that's where they filmed the guy getting his head removed and the multi colored neon blood squirting out of his neck. I believe that's when Joe Massot was relieved from his duties in favor of Peter Clifton. Peace, and thanks for this. 🌹

I need to check that out Kevin for sure. He was a scary man indeed. I found this on Hammerwood, In 1973, rock band Led Zeppelin bought Hammerwood at auction, intending to turn it into a recording studio and flats. Although the house did make an appearance at the beginning of the film The Song Remains the Same, their plans did not progress. Quick question Kevin, what part is the house featured? I was thinking on the intro, on the Mob Scene? Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode Two, premieres Saturday June 10th.

Love your work!I believe Page's heroin addiction definitely took it's toll.Apparently it can affect not only one's playing but also their hearing as I noticed his scratchiness when he was smacked back at the Forum in '75.

There is no other band where every person in the band is so VIP. They all had the abilities but also the abilities to cooperate with each other and have the success not ruin them. I personally think they would have all been better off had they just owned it, taken a break and came back when they were ready doing whatever they pleased. They could have done a folk tour with no drums and sold out 200k seats a show. Next tour they could have brought 6 different drummers, each studied on an erra, plus Jason for the solo and encore. I know what we are told but I think JP and JPJ would have continuted if RP was willing. RP I think had to carry a lot more of the pressure on his shoulders, living up to his old self, aging in an aging band, recovering from the devistating personal loss of his son as well as the near fatal accident previously, Pagey wasn't in good shape. Nobody in Zep ended up doing anything that remotely compared to their work together. I do understand and history is history, I just personally think they, would have (likely) been better off themselves had they faced it and owned it--- kept the band together - thought about it ---- and then let it evolve. The public would have gone whith them wherever they wanted. One piece of pie is better than no pie. Any Zeppelin is better than no Zeppelin.

Thanks for doing this one!!!! The only thing i ever read was Richard Cole's book about this meeting. From what i heard, the band said his book was a bunch of lies.

Been binging these, thanks for uploading today. From musician to musician, how important is following the changes for page's soloing? I find he is extremely melodic and outlines chords very well, but he also seems to play with abandon. what do you think?

Playing with abandon, such a great way to put it, that's the difficult thing about his style, the light and shade. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode Two, premieres Saturday June 10th.

Mind-blowing connection but it makes so much sense that there would be a huge musical vacuum in '77 because the entire future of music was birthed in this one crazy year. To wit, 1977 was the Great Debut Album Year of all time: Sex Pistols, The Clash, Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, B-52s, XTC, Dire Straits, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, The Pretenders, The Runaways, The Police, Elvis Costello, Motorhead, The Damned, Bjork (as a kid!), George Thorogood, Steve Winwood, and Iggy Pop three times! We are still living in the wake generations later.
