Gene Krupa’s drum solo in Sing Sing Sing was the genesis of drum solos for the last hundred years! His misses are the best in the world…

Louis Bellson was a class act, always humble and quick to praise other drummers. I had the good fortune to see his big band in the 1980’s.

Was a great drummer, unique, own style, not a snob like some of them. More talented then other drummers at that time.

Wow🎼🎹🥁🎷🎶🎵🎶🎻never seen like that drumsticks on a bass. WHO WAS ON THE BASS, DRUMS AND 🎹 AND SAX on the first song? WHAT A JOY TO SEE ALL THIS JAZZ BEST. Thank you Unbelievable 🎯 Showmanship galore in every area. BRING IT BACK NOW!!!!! 2022 Also Buddy Rich, but we also had Count Bassie' s drummer, " Hi - HE Fo Fum, Sam Woodward, drums solo. A lot of good rock n rock drummers, a lot jealousy in that arena in music, but that Cris Horn, trumpet player that did a show with Sting, now that drummer, Lee Pierson he is great. ONE THING FOR SURE MANY GREAT MUSCIANS FROM ALL COUNTRIES IN ALL STYLES OF MUSIC GENERAS INCLUDING CLASSICAL . What a generous man Gene Krupa was and good looking to boot.❤Caravan 💋

My Dad played me Sing Sing Sing right before I first picked up a pair of sticks, back in '84. The performance at the beginning of the video, I bought as a cassette in '91 and it was played as often as my Rush albums. Then I find out that amazing live album was filmed! That was a good day. The album was Gene Krupa, Ace Drumming Man. It was yellow.

Rich was off his face most of the time. Bellson and Krupa had way more credibility than arrogant Rich, who's nasty demeanor was due to his weed intake.

What Gene Krupa didn't play on drums didn't need playing......but he wasn't alone....at that time there was a wealth of fine drummers, as you might expect in The Great Age of Jazz. However, Krupa, almost single-handed, thrust the drums into the solo spotlight. Example?...the rideout drumming of the 1938 Carnegie hall, Sing,sing,sing...repeated in subsequent playing of that seminal number, as here. The narrator here is Steve Allan who portrayed Goodman in the film,'The Benny Goodman Story'.

I got weary of Bellson's obvious sour grapes about Krupa, and Bellson trying to "blow his own horn," and had to stop watching this at about the 23-minute mark..."Gene Krupa told me and Buddy that we could play circles around him." "I went to Gene Krupa's house many times, and Krupa was always asking me how I played this or how I played that, he was like a little kid asking me questions." (LOL. When Bellson was 2 years old, Gene Krupa had already begun playing drums professionally.) "Gene Krupa was a solid drummer, but it was mainly just his showmanship that made him stand out." Damn...LOL...Bellson was REALLY sour grapes about Gene Krupa...and it was very obvious.

I"m gonna say it. Gene is a better drummer than Rich. why? because he was so musical in what he did. He understood the band and the audience. He was also way on the cutting edge. I have heard Buddy in a small combo and frankly, in a small combo setting RIch stunk! Rich was good in a big band. Gene could go anywhere and make it good cause he let the music flow baby!

I’ve been saying this for decades. Of course it depends on your preference, but I’ve always leaned towards more musical drummers and Gene was that over Buddy. The ladder had blazing technique and if you’re into that stuff, then you’re gonna prefer him most likely. Joe Morello seems to be a combination of the two which lands him on my number one spot.

Please, there were so many better, Rich was just overexposed in media, especially on the tonight show with his pal Carson. All I hear in a Buddy Rich solo is fast noise, not music. Every top-shelf drummer is fast but you rarely see them playing fast because fast isn't music😮
