In the mid-late 1960s, a team at the National Physical Laboratory invented the means by which all data is transferred across networks.
This is the story of packet-switching by the men who pioneered it.

@@TI-ei6hy Not hyperbole - the internet has changed everything. I don't know what many people think - I just think the internet has had a huge impact, and it was enabled chiefly by packet switching.

ThunderAppeal - Perhaps you ought read the NY Times article of Nov 2001 ‘A Paternity Dispute Divides Net Pioneers’ regarding the claim to which you refer. It is clear from this NYT article that the claim you reference was regarded as dishonourable by key players involved historically. Have a nice day.

@@TI-ei6hy Len Kleinrock wrote his thesis in the early 60s and had it published in the mid 60s. What is 'dishonourable' about that? Who were the inventors of the calculus? And did they communicate with one another during its invention? Or did they work separately in tandem one not know about the other? The New York Times is considered a news paper of 'integrity' amongst the self centered echo chambered elitists, what today some will call 'influencers'.

Absolutely ridiculous this is not generally known. Credit is always given to ARPA. Imagine if the Post Office had gone with it instead of being a bloody stick-in-the-mud? Typical of the UK to mess that up.

Look up EPSS and PSS packet switching networks that the Post Office Telecoms launched. Unfortunately there were a lot of senior managers there who saw circuit switching as the future. Also a lot of vested interests from business units that sold modems and leased line data circuits.

Why don't these scientists mention Paul Baran? He invented packet switching first.

Not sure. I know Paul Baran came up with the idea early but it didn't catch on, and then Donald Davies later did as well and it gained traction then. Afaik the two were working independently and Donald Davies' work wasn't based on Paul Baran's, and the technology used in ARPANET was based on Donald Davies' work also so that's probably why Paul Baran isn't talked about much here. At least that's my understanding

He didn't implement it. It was just an idea in a white papaer. Davies built a system, then the Yanks follwed his implementation.

Because Bob Kahn invented TCP/IP, not packet switching, and while Vint Cerf worked on ARPANET & utilised packet switching, he didn't invent it...

Donald Davies was Welsh actually and he always recognised that his discovery was simultaneously discovered by an American colleague.
