Pathetic enforced by wrong actor - Ricard Barton. His way of acting does not correspond to realities. The face never changes from one movie to another. Presumed he is probably much better in theatres, but not in movies.

TREVOR HOWARD would have been a far, far better choice. Maybe a little bit too old for the part, but there was at least an impressive resemblance! -- after all, hadn't Visconti already given him that very (small) part in his 1972 film "Ludwig"? In addition, anyone who remembers the actor as the tyrannical Captain Bligh in the 1960s version of "Mutiny on the Bounty" knows how full of himself he could appear on the screen.

Richard Burton is not a conductor's hang nail, and he looks nothing LIKE Wagner.
