In western media it's usual to blame Soviet Union for the Aral sea disaster, which is partially true, but now Uzbekistan is doing nothing to save and protect Aral. Instead, Uzbekistan 1) established cotton mafia in Karakalpakstan and growing so much cotton, and exporting it to other countries and gaining a lot of revenue) 2) extracting gas and oil from the seabed 3) keeps the water of Amudaria in Muynak and thus letting the Aral sea die 4) abuses money granted by UN, EU and other international organisations to ameliorate life in Karakalpakstan and solve the Aral sea crisis. What Uzbekistan government likes to do is always blaming Soviet Union, while uz itself has stolen so much money given by international organisations. Ecosystem (salt and dust storms, desertification, pesticides, herbicides), water quality (saline) and health conditions didn't improve in Karakalpakstan. Uzbekistan is lying to the world presenting itself as a victim of Soviet Union, while Uz itself is just oppressing and worsening life and heavily assimilating Karakalpaks in Karakalpakstan.

Because the soviets needed cotton and didn’t necessarily look into what would happen if they disrupted the ecosystems on that level because they didn’t really care and were worried short term not long term. Especially since the USSR collapsed and now you can’t really hold them accountable since they don’t really exist, and Russia certainly won’t provide aid since they’d rather militaristic and take back there former land through force not aid.

the USSR were an evil empire. It makes you understand why the west is so afraid about communist expansion. They would literally destroy the world if they had control over it.

Here’s a very simple and feasible solution now.. to move forward: 1st, the ones responsable should be heavily held responsable. 2, stop investing in pointless wars and blaming climate change for everything and Instead, focus on practical measures. Use barges or pipelines to desalinate water and pump it into reservoirs for 3-6 months until they are refilled-it’s been done in other places, so it’s entirely possible. Alternatively, use bulldozers to construct artificial rivers from the nearest seas and refill them that way. All we see are documentaries, interviews, and finger-pointing about pollution, or what has been in the past..but that doesn’t solve anything. Nature follows its own course, and if we want change that benefits us without disrupting nature’s balance, it’s time to roll up our sleeves, take real action, and fix the problem making sure it never happens again.
