"Thravada Tripitaka" is the best and the oldest... Because it's the holy book in Buddhism of Buddha and his teachings. Because other people written books can give wrong and different definitions to Buddha and his teachings. Cause I found some wrong buddhist books which are different from the real teachings of Buddha. So try "Thravada Tripitaka"

The best would be to travel back in time and sit with our Lord Buddha. Second would be to read the scriptures in their original Pali. Since I have not been able to do either of these yet I recommend these three books. " What the Buddha taught" by Theravadin Walpola Rahula.
