I really hope the duke appears in a future resident evil game there is so much mystery to him he is definitely a fan favorite just like the merchant from re4 and re4 remake. I have a small theory about these two mysterious sells man maybe the duke came from a rich merchant family and the owl symbol is their family crest and he decides to go and try his hand in selling and then he travels to Spain and sees the merchant and he shows the duke how to trade and sell to customers 🤔 then they wish each other luck and maybe they will meet again. That is why the duke called the merchant an old friend he probably taught the duke everything about sells goods. 🤔

Despite I really like the idea of The Duke knowing about The Merchant, there's no way to tell if that "old friend" he talks about is The Merchant from RE4, as a merchant he probably knows many other merchants and "What are you buying" is pretty generic. A clear reference from Capcom indeed, but not that clear from The Duke.

Here’s my thought: I think the duke wasn’t infected with the altered cadou parasite, but much like mother Miranda, was infected by the megamycte. This is how he was aware of Ethan winter and rose’s power, as well as the ritual and four lords, but was not crazed as anyone in the village. Perhaps he was the original head of the village and found it. This is also how he was able to defy Miranda without invoking her wrath, and why the lords showed him respect (dukes are higher than lords). However, Instead of using the powers given for ambitions, he went out to enjoy the sense of living (hence his quote “to hunger is to be alive”) which resulted in his merchant occupation and heavy form. He traded, he ate, he hungered for rare things. Somehow, he returns to the village and chooses to help end the nightmare that has grown there (no idea why, but it could be realizing that Miranda would sacrifice the entire village for her child) perhaps he always was defiant of her, creating a benevolent and very human personality to juxtapose the self proclaimed “black god”

I would say that he is not neutral at all given that he is openly selling firearms and ammunition to an enemy of the houses that rule the village. Also he picks Ethan up and takes him to Miranda without any benefit to himself. He is most certainly a character that intends to help Ethan. Let’s also consider that at this point, Ethan is his only customer. I don’t know the exact math, but I think it’s safe to assume that he is actually losing money from trading with Ethan throughout the game.

The Duke is an amazing character, and he also is a good reason Ethan has character in this game, as well. I wish there had been more lore surrounding him, yet, that final scene with him taking Ethan back to Rose just... Made the game, and the story, for me. My theory is The duke is one half of what was the mold hive minds original conciousness who split off long ago when he realized the otherhalfs intention who operates as as polar opposite to his other half and wants to use ethan to help him stop his other half from spreading to the rest of the world or for some other similar purpose like wanting all of the horror gone from the village so he can live in peace. A conciouslly good bioweapon entity that would rather live in peace is something resident evil has never really done before and it would be a super cool plot device. I know the village gets destroyed in the end but I think he expected Ethan to kill Miranada but didn't account for chris redifled showing up to the village and blowing it up sky high. Plus: the epilogue shows an alive ethan. Since ethans a mold construct at least some part of the hive mind must have survived or he wouldnt have been able to be brought back. That part of the mold that survived is the duke. The thing that revived Ethan is the duke. He manages to appear in places that he would never ever be able to reach with the size that he is. So he does what the mold does. Disassembles itself and reassembles itself when it wants to travel anywhere. His power is directly from the mold and not from the parasite inside the other lords so he can do everything mold has been seen doing. And his connection to the mold is why he knows every single last detail of the events that are transpiring in realtime. He also has a voracious appetite and that is one of the defining characteristics of the mold we've seen over and over again. He appears to be well versed in fire arms construction which he could be using knowledge in firearms gained from one of the conciousnesses inside the mold. His horse drawn carriage is not actually a horse drawn carriage. Its a mold construct he uses to keep the appearance that he's just a man trying to make a living. The other lords allow him to come and go as he pleases even when helping ethan which tells me they wish to stop him but is far to powerful for ANY of them to be able to do anything about it. The only part of this theory I cant quite place YET is if he wants to fight his other half there has to be a reason why he can't do it alone and needs ethan and the help of the other good humans. Perhaps the other half is stronger then him? Or theyre equal in strength but the duke has no one because he doesnt believe in enslaving humans to his cause while the other half has an army of lords, werewolves lycans and all kinds of other stuff it uses to carry out its agenda. His whole being has the aura of a lovecraftian unknowable cosmic horror entity and that makes him an absolutely fantastic character and plot key. I'm probably wrong but I think that would be a refreshing plot device instead of just outright rehashing the same "BIO WEAPONS ALL BAD MAIN PROTAGINIST GOOD" plot that has plagued every. single. resident evil game up until now.

Also Desmond Tiny from Darren Shan The fact that he is friendly with the RE4 merchant is even better as he would know a lot about what went on. Perhaps it was only merely a passing mention but I like to think that they were truly friends. The only people to hate Duke are 'gaming journalists' who tend to hate on everything about videogames. So called journalists from things like Polygon claim he is a mockery of overweight people which is strange as nobody except these people have carried on about his weight. These same people will then attack Lady Dimitrescu for being tall and beautiful. Lowliest bunch of hypocrites who somehow get paid to trash the very thing they supposedly like. My personal idea is that the Duke is a being created by the Cadou in a similar manner to Mother Miranda - her 'brother,' if you like. He might have worked with her originally, but I like to think that he had come to disapprove of her work, maybe after kidnapping Rose, and decided to help Ethan in thwarting her. I don't believe there is any evil in the Cadou itself, so it offers a nice balance. No matter the origins, it is hard to dislike the Duke. He's such a fun character.

In the late files we find Spencer’s notes of how he was a student and he didn’t think the Cadou experiments would be ENOUGH.... I think Duke was a successful experiment between Lady Miranda and Spenser however seeing its limitations in a completed successful form, it still wasn’t contagious enough for Spencer. Also Lady Demetriscue’s size is due it high speed regeneration properties, I’m assuming Duke has those same abilities 😉🤔

BUT, I think it's a double translation error. I think "the right (one)"/"the righteous" is more meaningful in English and had been wrongly translated in French with "le droit". If it's the case, a better translation would have been "le digne" or "le juste". "L'argent défend le juste" seems more aligned with how the Duke want to help Ethan...in exchange for valuables.

Given that the merchants know each other, and they happen to just pop up anywhere they are needed and seem to ultimately be neutral - perhaps they are "outside observers" being drawn into the world due to all the damage that was done thanks to infectious fungus with gestalt consciousness and peculiar mutating reanimation viruses being used as bioweapons. Either that or he/they literally "sold" this to the original creators and caused this mess to begin with, being some literal "Satan" that set this up with a 'deal-with-the-devil' scenario. It's worth noting that duke has an owl symbol in his carriage which is hidden for most of the game, owl is often used as a symbol for wisdom and knowledge, owls are creature which silently watch us from far away by their all-knowing eyes... which if you try fit into the game's story fits Duke's character as he knows exactly what's going on around.. Owls also represents change, transformation and death. Think about it how does duke and his horse alive among the bloodthirsty monster he has to have some sort of transformation powers which allows him to stay alive. Remember when Ethan seemingly died duke was the one who picked him and took him to miranda or better said towards his real death/end. Hence he perfectly fits the owl symbol. Maybe we will learn more about him in the DLC.

In RE4 if you killed the merchant on the Professional difficulty he'd stay dead whereas on all the others he just popped up at the next place he set up shop.
