In all fairness, Disney isn't necessarily going after the church, but it does tackle on issues like good and evil, Heaven and Hell, religion, and even lust. That was a big one. If I remember correctly, they were originally going to cut the song, "Hellfire". While I am glad they've kept it in, it is still a really uncomfortable song. The whole thing about Frollo's lust for Esmeralda being so strong and she's rejecting him. Sex is such a big no-no for Disney, so the imagery of Esmeralda dancing in the fireplace comes off as kind of surprising. I don't think they went overboard with it, though. Parents might help kids see the good in the thoughtful and caring love and the bad in malice and vengeful lust.

@@JulieSchulerVideos I almost forgot to mention that it also has the issue of heartbreak; the main character doesn't get the girl. I think Esmeralda and Phoebus are kind of an unique Disney couple, and possibly one of my favorite Disney couples. They're not the main characters; it's something we don't see very often.

You know, I came up with a theory. 'Notre-Dame' means 'Our Lady' in French. So 'Notre-Dame de Paris' means 'Our Lady of Paris', which ofc means the cathedral, but can it also stand for Esmeralda, the lady who every man in Paris wants? In Hugo's book the cathedral is described as something pure, divine and beautiful, but disrespected by the city. Most characters in the book are... depraved. But who's described as pure and beautiful? Esmeralda, who's disrespected by the city. Who's responsible for the church's mistreatment? The clergy and the government. Who mistreats Esmeralda? The government and archdeacon Frollo. There's more. The book says that Notre-Dame has kept gothic architecture alive, and with the cathedral withering away gothic architecture is also dying. Now people, who do we think of when we think gothic? Gargoyles. Gargoyles are big and scary-looking. Who else is big and scary looking? Quasimodo, who dies with Esmeralda. The story is not something separate from the 'save Notre-Dame' theme, it is an allegory for it.

Victor Hugo named his novel after the cathedral herself since the cathedral is the main focus just as Esmeralda, Quasimodo and Frollo are

I love both the book and the movie (which I actually haven't watched but I've seen a lot of clips). I personally prefer the book, though, because it truly is beautifully written and I prefer Frollo's character there. Disney or not, I think he's the most interesting character. NGL I got introduced to Hunchback via the hit French musical called Notre Dame de Paris, which is available on KZbin with subtitles. I highly recommend it too!

I don't understand the people who love the book and hate the Disney film. Why not love both? Victor Hugo fans should know that he also wrote the loosely based opera "La Esmeralda", and understood what needed to be changed for a different medium. I'm an adult, but I'll always prefer the Disney film over the book. The book is too depressing, messed up, and Esmeralda is really a horrible character. I know the book is meant to be more realistic, but the Disney film knew there could be an element of hope in the story and to show that not everyone is awful. Also for the Laughton video, its important to know that Disney borrowed a few elements from that film. For Example (theres a scene similar to "God Help the Outcasts")

I don't hate it, but I love the book, 1939 and 1956 versions. Victor Hugo wrote many books, there is the book the man who laughs, Dea is sweet and kind to the deformed Gwynplaine who is a good and kind person. She is a sweet-hearted girl and thankful for Gywnplaine for saving her life. For more likeable characters I choose the man who laughs, but keeps the story dark.

I totally get why people hate the movie. I've read about 4 versions of this book over the years and even the versions differ but one of the biggest issues if the movie as well as this recap is the omission of characters. Removing characters really simplifies Frollo's character. The fact that Esmerelda is married plays a large figurative role. As well as the ages of the characters. Frollo is roughly 35 (depends on the version of the book) and Esmerelda is 14-16 (again depends on the book). The age gap was intentional and in the french version of this book, has word play around the attempted rape scene where Frollo tries to rape Esmerelda while she's in the cell. Also, Disney's need for a happy ending against censors the fact that Esmerelda dies in the end. I liked and disliked this recap. I was hoping this video would stay true to the book and not omit details like the movie but oh well.

In 1869 Victor Hugo wrote the man who laughs, has a history similar to the hunchback of notre dame. And several elements were reincorporated. Esmeralda was kidnapped from her mother, Gwynplaine was kidnapped and her father killed. Esmeralda meets the handsome and manipulative Captain Phoebus who is engaged, Gwynplaine meets the beautiful and sensual Duchess Josiane who is engaged to another man. Both are attracted to beautiful and manipulative people. Esmeralda meets her mother and Gwynplaine meets his older brother. Esmeralda is hanged and then the deformed Quasimodo dies,. the beautiful Dea dies in the deformed Gwynplaine's arms and he commits suicide. Victor Hugo doesn't regret having created Phoebus as a womanizer, he created his female version. The end of the hunchback was similar to the man who laughs. The difference is that Esmeralda doesn't love Quasimodo, but Dea loves gwynplaine.

@@JulieSchulerVideos The Man who laughs: www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/12587 Gwynplaine who is deformed and Dea who is blind, both say that they are happy and that they love each other. Their adoptive father warns them that the world is too cruel to people, especially the excluded, and that it could destroy their happiness. Despite the poverty, the difficulties, the girl is blind and the boy deformed, they are still happy. But the world is a cruel place. ------------- "Oh! you love me," said Gwynplaine. "I, too, have but you on earth. You are all in all to me. Dea, what would you have me do? What do you desire? What do you want?" Dea answered,- "I do not know. I am happy." "Oh," replied Gwynplaine, "we are happy." Ursus raised his voice severely,- "Oh, you are happy, are you? That's a crime. I have warned you already. You are happy! Then take care you aren't seen. Take up as little room as you can. Happiness ought to stuff itself into a hole. Make yourselves still less than you are, if that can be. God measures the greatness of happiness by the littleness of the happy. The happy should conceal themselves like malefactors. Oh, only shine out like the wretched glowworms that you are, and you'll be trodden on; and quite right too! What do you mean by all that love-making nonsense? I'm no duenna, whose business it is to watch lovers billing and cooing. I'm tired of it all, I tell you; and you may both go to the devil." And feeling that his harsh tones were melting into tenderness, he drowned his emotion in a loud grumble. "Father," said Dea, "how roughly you scold!" "It's because I don't like to see people too happy." Here Homo re-echoed Ursus. His growl was heard from beneath the lovers' feet. Ursus stooped down, and placed his hand on Homo's head. "That's right; you're in bad humour, too. You growl. The bristles are all on end on your wolf's pate. You don't like all this love-making. That's because you are wise. Hold your tongue, all the same. You have had your say and given your opinion; be it so. Now be silent."

The man who laughs and the hunchback of Notre Dame are very great stories! Love the characters in both of them. I think the two main characters in both stories yes I’m talking about Disney’s hunchback of Notre Dame and Victor Hugo is the man who laughs. Are very likable and gentle and kind and polite. And I think that both main characters in both stories have a way of speech. And it’s hard to explain but they all have something about them that makes them attractive with their personalities.

Aww. The second half really gets me in the feels. So tragic. I did recenlty listen to the audiobook. I did realize something. Pheobus is a jerk in the book version. The Disney version is a lot nicer. Yet I wonder if some of the jerk quality was carried over. That would explain why Phoebus has such bad chemistry. I ship Quasimodo and Esmeralda. I think that applies to the book as well as the movie. Quasimodo is really the only suitor that really cared for Esmeralda. He would have even loved her. If only Esmeralda loved him back. In the Disney version Quasimodo shows Esmeralda around the belltower after the festeval. there is so much wonderful chemistry and bonding. Things get pretty romantic towards the end. The couple sees a sunset. Then Esmeralda kisses Quasimodo on the cheek. Then after she escapes, he sings a romantic song. It is good stuff. There is a similar scene in the book after Quasimodo saves Esmeralda from hanging. It isn't quite as romantic, but it is still touching nonetheless. Both characters are hated for the way they look, and there is a connection there. Quasimodo is hated for being monsterous and deformed. That is just like how Esmeralda gets hatred for being Romani. Hatred of monsters is useful as an allegory for racism or some other kind of discrimination. Nobody loves Esmeralda like Quasimodo does. Phebus is good looking. However he is way too aloof in both versions. Frollo lusts after Esmeralda and simultaneously hates her guts. That doesn't count as love. Then there is Pierre, who only appears in the book. He seems caring at first. However in Esmeralda's time of greatest need, he chooses to save the goat instead. That is a jerk move. That guy likes the goat too much, and it comes off as creepy. Quasimodo and Esmeralda forever.

For those who didn’t read the book: Esmeralda: Basic bitch. Phoebus: Basic bro. Quasimodo: A beta male who betrays his guardian angel and his brother Jehan Frollo because of the love of a woman who would NEVER love him back. EVER. Frollo: Ingenious-alpha character who is the only character that is genuinely written by Hugo. He has his weaknesses, of course, because he is a man of the cloth. There are rules he can't break. Lost his parents and had to become both mother and father to his stupid brother Jehan. What's more? Hang on, he is the ONLY one who truly loves that basic bitch Esmeralda in the book. Could’ve been a scientist if it were as influential back in those days. On the other hand, he is compassionate. The ugly creature is saved, taught, and fed by Frollo and in return, Quasimodo kills his savior's brother. That is what I call loyalty man! Such a shame really he is only known as a “villain” in this pop culture.

Honestly, even as someone who read the book in high school, I prefer the stage musical and movie over it. While I have nothing against sad or dark stories and endings when done right, the book was super mean spirited for no reason. If you're gonna make something dark, have it serve a purpose otherwise it's no better than some edgy teenager's grim dark fanfiction. In the book, it's just that. The characters are so mean spirited and do such shitty things that it becomes kinda silly. On top of that, the characters were one dimensional, the prose were awkward even in the original French and the less I talk about the racism surrounding Esmeralda, the better. I think Les Misérables (at least the actual musical) is a lot better. While the movie has problems like the tonal issues and the annoying comic relief, it's more hopeful and has more of meaning behind the darkness. The characters are more fleshed out. Esmeralda is actually Romani. Hellfire is still one of the best Disney villain songs. The ending just seems more fitting and wraps everything up better. The stage musical takes that and goes even further with it, making Frollo even more terrifying and real. If that version nixed the tragic ending and added in the romance between Phoebus/Esmeralda more, then it would be perfect.

Unrequited love at its finest! The way she describes Quasimodo‘s reactions! I can almost picture that happening in a Disney movie or in the novel. Quasimodo suppresses tears because he hates that he’s not handsome like Esmeralda‘s lover PHOEBUS. Esmeralda van urges him to go, she cries with joy and urges Quasimodo to go. He immediately breaks down sobbing in Esmeralda‘s arms and starts to confess his feelings for her. He latches onto her tightly as he cries. He bluntly tells her he’s not going to get PHOEBUS for her because he knows that he loves her. He then tells her that he loves her so much that he wants to stay with her. Then he throws himself into her arms buries his face in her shoulder and cries sharply as the feelings of pain and heartache and love tighten his chest. Then Quasimodo refuses to let go of Esmeralda who is disgusted with him. As she would be. But he doesn’t care, he lets out a sharp cry and refuses to speak because his feelings are too overwhelming for words to explain how he feels. He begins to rub Esmeralda‘s back and shoulders and Esmeralda refuses Quasimodo once more but he does not refuse her. He is rubbing her back and shoulders and still deeply in love with Esmeralda. To the point where he refuses to leave her. Meanwhile, PHOEBUS comes looking for Esmeralda, he then finds hersell, opens her door, and sees the light on! He is horrified at what he sees. He sees Quasimodo embracing Esmeralda and his arms and rubbing her back! The guard captain becomes very very jealous of the bell ringer, so he takes Esmeralda away from Quasimodo and tries to leave the room. Quasimodo then faints! Esmeralda leaves with the guard captain and slams the door and the bell ringers face. Quasimodo collapses to the ground crying sharply as the pain in his chest overcomes him! He is on the floor trembling like a leaf when his master comes into the cell. He then finds Quasimodo crying in a state of hysteria, so his impulses act without him. He picks up the younger man and holds him close, then he begins to rub his back and starts to sing something in Latin to try to calm his nerves and emotions. When he realizes that Quasimodo is deeply in love with Esmeralda, he is disgusted! And he takes Quasimodo on a walk to solve the problem. And Quasi through his tears tells his master everything that’s going on in the cell. His voice soft and sweet like the flute ALL be it as shaky as a leaf, but as YOUTHFUL as a child, begins to tell FROLLO everything to his surprise the priest listens and puts his arms around the young man who is suddenly frightened and scared. Then, the priest takes him in to the Notre Dame cathedral bell tower and, knowing that it is time for mass, rings the bells for Quasimodo who is listening and here’s the bells and the priest singing. Then they sit up on the roof of the bell tower and Quasimodo here’s Frolo comforting him and he cries quietly, while Frolo only comforts Quasimodo who is now with his master. Then Esmeralda comes up to the bell tower to find the two of them bonding and having a moment together, she is disgusted with both of them and runs off in fear. Anyways I just came up with this entire scenario entire chain of events while hearing the way the actions of Quasimodo have been described in the novel. And I just created an entire story about it. And I actually got the inspiration from hearing those descriptors in the video. And, even better yet, I kept most of the characters in character. As much as I could, and, even better yet if I was able to make Quasimodo as kind and as sweet as his Disney counterpart, so what I did was I kept his ability to be kind and sweet and his ability to hear, and his sweet quiet voice and lovable nature from the Disney movie only putting him in the situation of the novel scenario. With all the other characters the way they are in the novel. Anyways what are your thoughts. I want the person who made this video to be able to read this comment and see how she thinks about it and what she thinks about it? And how emotional this guy. I wish that the scene was in the novel because I said as it would be to read it would be a great scene in the novel.

The disney movie is much more suitable for children, it makes the story enjoyable for ithem. But I can't appreciate the film because it seems like a very idealistic ending. It is a naive development suitable for children, but I am not a child and I cannot appreciate it because it seems too artificial. It could be a happy ending, but a little less happy. I remember the story of Petrus Gonsalvus who never had social acceptance and he lived almost 100 years after the story of the book. He lived in isolation with his family. I even have resistance with certain idealized characters of Victor Hugo. I like Dostoevsky more for exploring facets darker and less idealized of being human being.
