Hello fellow McLoughlins and most likely we're all distant relatives at some point in time. All my ancestors who came to the US are from Ireland. Greetings from New York 🇺🇸🇮🇪

My great grandmother's name was Mabel Mcloughlin. I always felt the name meant from the land of the lakes, referring to Norway and Scotland.

I took my mom to Ireland. We drove ourself and stopped in quaint little towns and spoke to people. A historian told us that our name from a longer word meant red headed friend from the north - Vikings

When my aunt came back from her trip to Ireland and Scotland, she brought back a scarf of the Tartan of Clan Maclachlan. In my father’s side, I am an Irwin and a Macgregor. Both a lineage of royal descent as is everyone who is apart of these two highland clans.

I'm McLaughlin too. The name originated from Norway or as it was known then, Lochlann. Lochlann means 'Lake Lands because Norway has many lakes. In the 11th century a man called Lochlainn was the King of Ailech (Donegal) and his grandson Donmall had the name Mac Lochlainn. 'Mac' means son of so Mac Lochlainn translated into English means 'Son of Lochlann.' Other spellings of it are Lachlan, Loughlin, Lochlaan or Laughlin. Hope this helps, Lachy Lad

This is so fascinating. I'm a McLaughlin, but have no idea if it's Irish or Scot or where we originated from. My great-grandmother said that she was 100% Irish, but I found out later that Mac and Mc names tend to be Scot, so assumed she was Scots-Irish. It's all so confusing lol. Any help on how to narrow it down would be great!

Our derivation 'McLaughlin' is from the north of Northern Ireland. Around an area called Inniskillin nearish to Donegal. The top three coastal counties of Northern Ireland (probably owing to the two derivations of the family buckle/symbol or a single rook/tower or three, pertaining to the three counties that were also regarded as one) each have a town called McLaughlin The original king "McLaughlin" (as that is far from its original spelling) was a great King over a significant aspect of Northern Ireland around 700AD. There was a significant altercation between the McLaughlins and the O'Neils. The O'Neils decimated the McLaughlin's so badly that they weren't even listed among the official clans in the 1066 cencus. It is written in the history of the slaughter of the McLaughlin's that many people of renown were deeply troubled at the loss of so many McLaughlins. That the McLaughlins had many nobel people of their clan that many other clansmen mourned the loss of.

The McLaughlin's all originated in Ireland. I know my family stayed in Ireland until my Great, Great, Great Grand Mother moved from Ireland to Canada. I spoke with the MacLaughlin Society (Clan MacLaughlin) and our Cousin moved from Ireland to found Clan MacLaughlin and both the MacLaughlin and McLaughlin would go back and forth between Ireland and Scotland so most of us will have some ties to both. when I looked it up we are a branch of the O'Niall (now O'Neal) Both the McLaughlin out of Dongal and the O'Niall are believe to be descendants of Niall of the 9 Hostages en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niall_of_the_Nine_Hostages . I did a DNA test back 10 years ago that said it has DNA from Niall and it match up with my with mine so some their is some truth to the story.

Mc Mac M' do not indicate Scottish or Irish nor does a specific spelling .As an example each is shown on birth records of my wifes family through generations but the spelling changes McRae, McCrae, McCrea ( plus Mc Mac M') In addition the origin myth of many Scottish clans linking to O Neill princes and Kings in Ireland is just that a myth. There is a growing body of opinion that the "loch lands" part of the name refers to Scotland rather than Norway. Parts of Scotland and it's islands are filled with lochs and lochans . These were area's where there was a strong Norse influence in the past so it could still refer to those people in that part of Scotland

It's all the same family you have to remember a lot of people hundreds of years ago did not know how to spell and going to register a birth the registrar would write down how he thought the name was spelt. I have traced My McLaughlin back to 1700s and there are different spellings within the same family. So hello to you all where ever you are from sunny Scotland/Ireland 🏴🍀🙂
@thenextshenanigantownandth43935 жыл бұрын
McLaughlins all originated in Ireland, it's not of Scottish origin. Some of the Irish McLaughlins went to Northern Britain from Ireland gaining territory there.
@scottfuller51943 жыл бұрын
That info is most correct.....every record was hand written by someone who could read and write.....their hearing and phonetic pronounced names would be what was put into ink.....on parchment and or early paper and registries......the written records made are what was entered therein.....and then further subject to the next interpretation of the person who read those transcriptions.....again another “name-filter”......the very early use of Norse dialects are what remain today in place names in modern day Scotland and Ireland and those gaelic names recorded.....!
@thenextshenanigantownandth43935 жыл бұрын
If it originated in Ireland and went to Northern Britain than it's not of Scottish origin, which it isn't.
