Back in the early 1990's came an incredible event, most now, don't remember or know about. It was an event that ended with the sinking of a family cruise ship and an incredible air rescue all while the captain had already escaped. This is the story of the sinking, of the Oceanos.

To be fair if you put the same people who manage and operate cruise ship theatrical productions in charge of operations that include coordinating and moving large numbers of people they would probably do pretty darn well. Actually they have to nowadays in order to work for cruise ships you have to prove to be sea capable and can manage lifeboats and drills

It gets a bit more awkward when you realize that Moss Hills, the guitarist, singer and one of the entertainers, have survived the sinking of two cruise ships, the second being the MS Achille Lauro, which caught fire in the Indian Ocean and started sinking. Moss Hills used what he learned on the Oceanos and helped people to safety. He refuses to stop entertaining on cruise ships and still sails.

@@bjplayz9940 First, because they provided assurance to the passengers that they would assist in keeping them safe in an emergency. That caused the passengers to make their decisions to board under what turned out to be false pretenses. Additional risk was present that the passengers were not aware of when they boarded, and that risk was created by the crew. Second, because the crew took equipment the passengers needed to live, knowing full well their actions could condemn many passengers to death. It was only through herculean efforts that those deaths were prevented.

I wouldn't say attempted murder, more like involuntary murder, which is where you know someone is in a life threatening situation, but don't bother to save them. I feel like that would make more sense, but I agree. The crew should be charged for attempted/involuntary murder.

I actually saw the Oceanos key side in Durban harbour before she embarked, she wasn't a rusty ship at all as you described, I saw freighters in far worse condition than she was in the docks. As a South African we were shocked and couldn't believe what happened but back then our armed forces were very well equipped and trained to deal with these things. We also had 2 of the best open ocean rescue tugs in the Southern hemisphere, they were the "John Ross" and the "Wolrade Woltemade " they were often sent out to tow in damaged commercial shipping vessels. Oh and the pronounciation of Transkei is said as "trans -sky". It is definitely known as the wild coast for it's serious storms and severe currents. Thanks for an awesome video 😁👍🏻👍🏻

Holy cow. This is the most bizarre thing I've ever seen. There's no alarm. Its like a normal day. No search of the ship. "No ROK divers competent enough?" I find that hard to believe. The captain left the ship, but he was helping people off board. No one seems upset. Then Park arrives and the rescuers "pretend" to be working for her benefit. All Park cares about is getting good video feed. She "orders" there to be "no casualties." Really? "Oh, if the president orders it, then we should get to work." I guess the real error is not ordering an abandon ship. Only civilian volunteers bothered to look for bodies. This is BIZARRE.

I study lost ships. The reason is it shows the incredible amount of human courage in the worst of times. Ships are their own enclosed environment, with often only their resources on board to survive. There are extraordinary captains of course, but you'd be surprised at how many of the heroes are simply people who rose to amazing heights. The SS Pennsylvania was saved by a passenger (although he had been a crew member before, credited with saving many lives on the RMS Atlantic, the baker on the Titanic, and so many more. People whom you wouldn't know as amazing until they were. I don't think they knew either until that moment, they simply did what had to be done and became heroes.

With Titanic part of the problem was passengers didn't initially want to get in the boats, especially when it meant leaving their husbands and fathers behind. It was believed by many that the ship was not sinking and that they would have to later return to the ship looking like fools. It was only after the ship started listing heavily that passengers really believed that the ship was sinking and of course by then there weren't many boats left and launching them was more difficult due to the listing. Now they don't do women and children first, but rather keep families together so they are more willing to get into the boats.

You should cover the sinking of the South Korean ferry Sewol from 2014. Over 300 people died, mostly high school students. They were told to stay put in their cabins by the crew. The captain fled the ship as well.

I just watched the New Yorker doc on that. I commented above on the similarities. All but one: the ROK disaster, there were no rescue efforts almost at all. It brought down the government. Well, it got the ball rolling.

Robin Boltman was the best magician I have ever known. He successfully made two ships disappear: Achille Lauro and Oceanos. Boltman’s parrot couldn't stop talking and interrupting his routine. Boltman and the parrot ended up in a lifeboat watching the Oceanos slip beneath the waves and the parrot hasn't said a word. Finally they get to dry land the parrot says. “Ok wise-arse, I give up, where did you hide the ship?”

I remember this when it happened. I was stunned that a modern day cruise ship sunk like that. For those few crew members..the entertainment staff and passengers who stayed on board to help organize and facilitate rescue efforts I can't find enough words to express my profound pride, gratitude and quite frankly hero worship.🤗 To the coast guard crews with their courage under fire and tremendous skills...well just wow.. Thank thank Thank you Thank you... And to all the passengers who just held on..followed instructions, reassuring and encouraging each other, not fighting or trampling, just bravo! 👍👏 To the almighty who answered so many prayers..Thank you. As for that so-called Captain and the bulk of the crew that fled with not a shred of care for the passengers one can only pray there is a reckoning in the next world if not in this one. Spineless wonders...dang jellyfish, each of you should have served lengthy prison sentences at the very least. Post abandonment, dereliction of duty, attempted murder. A prime example of the worst of humanity. An unforgettable amazing event.

My grandparents were on this ship the day it went down. They were rescued by the helicopters and entertainment crew. They are still thankfully doing well and have recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. The main crew also apparently went through and looted everyones cabins for valuables before getting into the life boats. During this time all passengers were in the entertainment area. Our family doesn’t go near ships now for obvious reasons.
