A legendary and iconic aircraft from its service life during the Second World War, the Junkers Ju 87 "Stuka" in fact debuted years before in Southern Europe - during the intensity of the Spanish Civil War. Used as a testing ground by major powers, The Ju 87 set out to prove its effectiveness against the Republicans - this is the Story of the Stuka in the Spanish Civil War.

Was Spain republican govt. Really all that left wing. Was it not what is called today social democratic. The nobody called the tory govt in Ireland nor de valeras govt in the 1930s left wing when they took land from the landlords and gave it to farming tenants.

A minor point, but while the 87's sirens would have certainly have been scary for humans, they were mainly intended to frighten horses. Most of the world's armies in the late '30s, including the German, still relied heavily on horses for towing artillery, supplies and field kitchens. In fact, I think only the armies of Britain, France and the United States were fully mechanised by 1940. While a human could take cover, and usually be relied on to keep their head down, a horse would understandably just bolt, with disastrous results for whatever it had been pulling.

I always heard one of the reasons Hitler didn't use gas was because horses were still the prime movers for much of the German Army. Horses don't respond well to gas masks.

Awesome video on an often glossed-over part of the aircraft's history. Teufelkopf means "Devil's Head", btw, and Totenkopf is "Death's Head", which was the crest used by the SS.

It's a misconception the sirene was called "Jerricho trumpet." JT was the name for using a piece of pipe stuck to the bomb. That made a high pitched sound. Pilots hated the siren because it gave away were they came from.

This brings attention to an often neglected theatre of war, which had important consequences for the World War that followed. A great presentation with lots of context and very good selection of footage!

About the connection with pigs. Any metallic object a German soldier during his service could conceivably encounter, walk past, jump over, climb on or in, hear a vague rumor about from Heinz who works in the mess hall or read about on the wall of a toilet has over the centuries been called an "Eisenschwein" or Iron Pig. With extra points for when the poor object, which may be a mess can or a bedstead or a Leopard 2, seems to have a slightly sturdier build than is common for that type of object. This practice started at the dawn of the iron age in Germania and will continue to the day the sun starts fusing iron, after which it too will be called Eisenschwein, briefly.

The Moscow Gold (Spanish: Oro de Moscú), or alternatively Gold of the Republic (Spanish: Oro de la República), was 510 tonnes of gold, corresponding to 72.6% of the total gold reserves of the Bank of Spain, that were transferred from their original location in Madrid to the Soviet Union a few months after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. This transfer was made by order of the government of the Second Spanish Republic, presided over by Francisco Largo Caballero, through the initiative of his Minister of Finance, Juan Negrín. The term also encompasses the subsequent issues relating with the gold's sale to the USSR and the use of the funds obtained. The remaining quarter of the Bank's gold reserves, 193 tonnes, was transported and exchanged into currency in France, an operation which is also known by analogy as the "Paris Gold".

Oblt. Heinz Böhne, Stfkpt of 2/StG-1 was eventually KIA 2 June, 1940; shot down by Gladiators of No. 263 Sq. after a bombing raid on Narvik. With his port wing on fire, the Ju-87R-1 crashed at Beisfjord (Flyvrak Norway).

I had a German friend kindly give a pronunciation guide on literally every single German word in this video, which I then tried to learn. If I still got it wrong, then it's not for lack of effort.

Put more effort in? That video was well above average for an English speaker attempting German words. I also watch Military Aviation History where a German speaker uses accented English. Well done him for trying hard. Pronouncing foreign words is always tricky and criticism of anyone trying hard is, at best, petty. I could point out that the OP's use of English is, at best, poor. But that would be unworthy. This is an English language channel, where are your standards?

Could you share the sources you’ve drawn your data on crimes in the two sides from? They sound rather incredible. The Nationalistic side was far more murderous than the governmental, republican side. There’s plenty of evidence in this respect, and many good reasons for such a relation. For instance, the Condor Legion to which Ju-87 belonged to, was used to experiment with the bombing of civilian population, not only in Guernica but in other places.

@@Hartley_Hareit was indeed very cruel and savage (and irrational and stupid), but the fascist one was way worse. It was sistematic and cold blooded in a way... much more efective and brutal. Read The Spanish Holocaust, by Paul Preston. Einsatzgruppen levels of savagery in the south of spain. And don't forget they have many more years, even decades, to terrorize... because they won the war. And in fact as someone said. The "white" terror would always be larger than the "red" terror just because they have to reach more people in numerical terms. And I'm no left wing fan before anybody says so.
