Great demonstration of what happens to shot spun out of a spiral-rifled bore. If you ever pattern snakeshot out of a normal pistol, you get a donut-shaped result with a big blank spot in the middle due to centrifugal force making the shot go all wonky. But not with straight rifling.

Nor with smooth bore. I have a Remington 511 X (If I remember correctly), a rare smooth bore bolt action single shot .22. What you explained in my experience with rifled 22's-vs-the smooth bore is exactly true. I also get more range with the smooth bore. Of course I am referring to .22 "shot shells", often referred to as "rat/snake rounds".

First, that rifle is superb, double rifles (or as we call them in French "express") are always a treat. Second, the purpose of that straight rifling reminds me of the "paradox rifling", patented by col. Fosberry (yes, the same Fosberry behind the self cocking revolver sold by webley). Great video as always! Oddly, I had an idea before I knew that they were made that straight rifling would be better than a smooth bore because of the possibility of a round ball obtaining a forwards or backwards spin or "roll" just like with a baseball a rolling ball flying through the air will always be pushed up if rolling backwards or down if rolling forwards. Straight rifling would prevent this. When you talked about gasses escaping unevenly it seemed to be another mechanism for this to happen. Flame blowby marks on straight walled cases are usually very much longer on the top side when fired because the bottom is lying against the chamber. This could roll a loose ball.

If I’m not mistaken the Taurus Circuit Judge 45/.410 rifle/shotgun had a rifles barrel which would negatively effect the .410s shot, however they did make a straight rifling adapter to thread in like a choke to help stop the spin and correct the flight path of the shot from a circular pattern to more of a traditional smooth bore pattern.

Interesting firearm. The straight rifling is probably a bit of a non sequitur, IMO. Any advantages you get over a smoothbore are kinda mooted. While you are able to shoot both shot and patched ball with reasonable efficiency, you lose the speed loading of paper cartridges in a smoothbore and you also lose some performance with shot. I dont really see the point of it. Id rather just have rifled on top, smooth on the bottom. Like more contemporary combo guns.

The patch box is made out of metal and engraved. The whole rifle is engraved with deer hunting scenes (perhaps also wild boar). Perhaps if I take the barrels off, there are markings under the wood front gard, which is one and the same with stock. The barrels also have some kind of protective, Damascus like finish. Also unsure if both barrels are straight rifled of both slow twist.

Many of the original ball firing rifles had nearly straight rifling of 1 turn in 5.5 to 10 feet. This imparts enough spin to assist the spherical projectile, and marginally stabilize others. With a conical modern bullet it's ineffective. Small slugs at best, balls even better. This would be in the pre-cartridge era, muzzle loaders.

I was told two reasons for straight rifling. The first was for German or Swedish hunting laws. You were only allowed one rifle, so having a straight rifled shotgun barrel kept birdshot tight before chokes were commonplace. The second barrel was for slugs or minet balls. The second reason was that the channels were employed as crud collectors, so blackpowder fouling would be kept to a minimum on the bore surface, and more shots could be taken between cleaning breaks. Increases rate of fire, if you will, but minimal effect on accuracy, hence the second rifled barrel.

In every case, it appears to be the same recurring issue, where anything downrange that happened to be inline w/ the barrel would end up being destroyed in the event of operator induced discharge, invariably involving the manual depression of one or both triggers. As a 2A activist & firearms enthusiast, it pains me to admit that this is exactly the type of device that has no business in civilian hands!
