The strange behaviour of auxetic foams

It seems to me that auxetic structures are in a "pre-buckled" state. Perhaps certain non-auxetic materials could be transformed into auxetic materials simply by annealing them in a state of compression?

I saw this on "Tomorrow's World" back in the 1980s. Now I know what it's called. At the time they were looking for a use for it. I don't know if one has been found.
