Sol Invictus was an awesomely solid album. I toured with them for a little bit when they were doing that album cycle, and I can see they were easily some of the nicest most down to earth people I've ever been on the road with. Mike Patton is the master of a puppets… the guy behind the curtain… the man your mother warned you about. He’s the guy trapped under the thin ice of a shallow frozen lake that you can see screaming at you, but can’t quite hear… searching vehemently for the fracture that will free him. All of his project are on heavy rotation in my life/home, and I still get the same looks from people when they hear a song they’ve never heard with him on vocals just like when I was cranking Mr. bungle in junior high school. It’s awesome. Highly underrated performer/artist. I really wish the best for him and I hope he breaks through that ice one day and gets the credit he deserves.

@@LegendoftheDragonSword egg-sackly. I also think this is why some music listeners are always looking for unique-sounding new music. 1 band I apparently cannot get sick of? They were called Fair to Midland, & their 1st album is almost unlistenable...but after that, everything they made was BRRRILLIANT. They had an EP called The Drawn & Quartered EP that was simply amazing...2 of my 3 favorite FTM songs are on there, & a 3rd song is on my top 7. Only 4 songs on that thing. (1) Granny Niblo, 2) Orphan Anthem 86, 3) Abigail. That's for starters. Everyone seems to like the album Fables From the Mayfly best. I have it @ #3 for me. They released an LP (InterFundaStifle) that contained songs found in the EP while other songs appeared on Fables (w/betterproduction, slightly different versions of the songs). Their last album was kind of an epic...Arrows & Anchors. So many great songs. Whiskey & Ritalin, Musical Chairs, Uh-Oh, Rikki Tikki Tavi, Short-haired Tornado, the Greener Grass...all great, plus more. They also have a couple of demo songs you can find on YT... Sound like...I don't know, maybe if Tool & System of a Down had a love child (just without Serge's weird nasally voice). Speaking of, FTM was on Serge's record label for 2 of those albums. Don't think they liked the experience. I heard Serge kind of bullied his way onstage with them a few times, incl. Coachella, IIRC. AND if you find you like FTM, check out the somewhat similar-sounding Rishloo (starter songs: Freaks & Animals, Scissorlips, Diamond Eyes). Their vocalist is wicked talented, as is Darroh fr. FTM. Back when cds came in an oversized box, I had the Angel Dust album cover on my locker at school which led to a three day suspension! Small Victory is my favorite song and it hits a little different theses. I’ve gained amazing amount of wisdom through great music like Faith No More!

It doesn't surprise me they would do something like suspend you for 3 days over something that silly. I'm so glad people understand music more today than they ever have, but it's also very hard for new artists to blow up "like Nirvana did" because now a days everyone can find some sort of fame do to social media. Everything comes with its ups and downs, here is a perfect example of both. 🤭🙂🙃

A few things: 1) Looks like some other commentors took care of calling attention to the fact - but i shall repeat - that it was "Easy" by The Commodores that FNM covered around the time of Angel Dust. This song was not featured on the original version of Angel Dust - but was, instead, included as a part of an EP - "Songs To Make Love To" which was released (at least here in the US) in 1993. 2) After Jim Martin was fired, Trey Spruance came aboard and helped write King For A Day. Apparently, when he realized how severe the upcoming FNM tour was going to be he excused himself from the band. Dean Menta, who had been a tech for the band filled in. From Wikipedia: "Menta went on to serve as the guitarist for the rock band Faith No More from 1995 to 1996. He had been a keyboard tech for the band, first meeting them in 1991, while working at a San Francisco art gallery. Menta was recruited to handle guitar duties after Trey Spruance declined to tour for the album King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime. He appears in their videos for "Digging the Grave", "Ricochet" and "Evidence". He was replaced as Faith No More guitarist by Jon Hudson." 3) For those who might care to witness it - this is an early FNM performance featuring Courtney Love -- warning -- it is... dated: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n363eJ93haygpK8

Greatest band ever. It’s an interesting story. We (in Australia) embraced the band as did Europe. AD, KFAD, and AOTY we’re all greeted as masterpieces as they were released. It was evident how talented this band was and how they couldn’t be easily constrained to a single genre. Only the US seemingly didn’t get it. Nice to see sentiment changing on albums like AD and KFAD, even if it is 30-ish years too late

Discovering Faith No More (and Mr Bungle) in my teens way back when was a pivotal part of my musical development. They blended and bent genres at will, the music was challenging yet approachable and catchy. Patton is of course inhumanely talented but the rest of the band (past and present) are exceptional musicians and songwriters too. That’s why they have produced such a legacy of wildly varying albums which have only grown in reputation over the decades and continue to influence new generations of musicians. Along those lines, you really should do videos on Mr Bungle and Strapped Young Lad. Both being mostly underground projects - centred around a godly vocalist but also insanely talented musicians - that have disproportionately influenced generations of musicians ever since. Just imagine a Devin Townshend/Mike Patton collaboration! The resultant sound could strip paint from the walls. Assuming the house itself doesn’t implode 😅

The blame for "Album of the Year" being branded a "failure," lies solely on the music critics and journalists that relentlessly panned the album without explanation. That didn't make it any less popular with fans, it was just more of a slow burn than a pop hit (like mainstream turn of "Angel Dust"). Album of the Year's always been my fav FNM album. Patton didn't have a lot to do with it lyrically - it was mostly Gould. An album of grief, sorrow, and dealing with the inhumanity of man and war. The song "Pristina," is about the genocide in the city of Pristina, during the Kosovo War... Along with the rest of the Balkan Wars (Cold War proxy wars). Gould and other band members visited survivors & refugees. A few bands of the time went out there to give proceeds from concerts to SA crisis centers, like Nirvana (primarily Kurt), and were likewise also moved lyrically by witnessing that trauma. Idk what "gatekeepers" were "obsessed" with Nü Metal, especially given Album of the Year came out in *1997* ...where it likely got unfairly lumped-in with the Post-Grunge mvmt that was on its way out in the late-90s. Nü Metal was subversive as hell, started around '94/'95, but wouldn't get any radio play or circulation on MTV until the end '99/2000. In the immediate aftermaths of Post-9/11, it got torn apart by the harshest music censorship since the decades long witch hunt that suppressed Jazz, Blues, & early Rock 'N Roll under "obscenity laws"... Until white racist Elvis Presley ripped everyone off. FNM has consistently paid homage to Jazz on every single album, while the melding of hip hip, funk, and punk/thrash were simultaneously coming-up with fellow cross-genre pioneers Suicidal Tendencies, Bad Brains (briefly shared FNM's first singer), and later _early_ RHCP thanks to Hillel (RIP) & Flea. I love all those bands & Nü Metal. Many later bands branded under the banner of Nü Metal were actually Rap-Rock, but there was a lot of crossover. When we're talking commercialism taking over the genre, that's Papa Roach - dude that got quoted in this video. Deftones fell under the banner because they got mainstream hits while being a rock band, but they don't have any Nü Metal elements. Their sound's a lot more like what what Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Smashing Pumpkins were doing in the late-90s & early 2000s. BTW, it's short-sighted* (not "sided").
