There’s nothing strange about that collection. What’s strange is the owner’s and your expectations being wildly different. Why would he sell off important books from his collection on a piecemeal basis when he obviously doesn’t need the money? He saw a fellow collector and comic book enthusiast and wanted to show off his collection to someone who might appreciate it.

Don't think there is anything strange about the collection. Obviously, he really doesn't want to sell. You mentioned he is well off, so that should be an indication to you. He does not need money. He is still attached to his collection. Pretty typical, until someone is ready to part with childhood memories.

i agree, as im watching this guy it doesnt seem he is truly interested in the stories the comics have to offer but he is truly interested in the profit it could bring.

Not exactly smart putting his slabs near a window, the uv light will slowly fade his books. He needs to put heavier drapes. You can see the sunlight coming through his blinds and reflecting off the slabs and everything else in his room.

The reason why you walked away with nothing is simple. In his eyes at that moment he saw your offers as too cheap and he expected you to pay full blow on that stuff. You should have simply walked away. He figures that stuff is not eating anything and he’s not hurting for the money. The moment that guy said let me think about it that should have been your indication to leave!

Thanks for sharing. I’m surprised you didn’t take the Zatanna book out of the deal to walk away with something. Also, can’t hurt to follow up with him in a few weeks. A successful man like that wouldn’t need to be in a rush.

I don’t think the collection is strange…you collect what you like and what you feel is valuable to you….the strange part was the interaction itself…if you were given the impression he wanted to sell and then left with nothing, I think maybe there needs to be more transparency up front from your end before you even take the time to meet up with a fellow collector. Let him know your intentions during those interactions leading up. Maybe you did that, idk…but that’s a super nice collection imo. Nice video! 👍

Yep, good comment. Sure we all want to show off our collection occasionally. Eh, what works for me is just alot of pictures on the phone a (snapshot of what i have, and looking for). Yes i myself would of talked a little shop before hand ie ah you got a batman 227? , is it in good shape? how much do want for it? i got a hulk 181 you interested?, wana trade? etc on and on, if he wasent giving any prices; then well theres your answer, he was just mainly looking "display". Ha , or you could just "trim the fat" and ask are you a museum? or a trader/seller? -Cheers

I'll say this to any people going out buying from collectors. If you low-ball someone right out of the gate, you just burned that bridge. I'll never tell anyone to not haggle. I do sells myself and I think someone is insane if they don't haggle with me over key books or expensive books. If someone haggles with me over the quarter box, I'll tell them where they can go. But I expect people when I'm out selling to haggle with me. If someone throws out a decent price, I'm going to work with them until we meet in the middle. Heck if I get a decent offer, I might not even bother to haggle. But if someone low-balls me and then tries to explain it to me, I'll present them the gate. I know what I've got...I know how much it's worth...I tend to price a little high on some stuff because people ALWAYS want to haggle. If you tell them your final price right off, they'll show YOU the door. So I always price with the expectation of haggling. It can honestly be fun. One thing I learned early when I was flea marketing comics as a kid...Don't take ANYTHING you don't want to let go of. If you're taking to sell, take things you'll sell. I had a bad habit in the early days of taking everything, and of course people want the popular items. So, when I say: "Well, that's got sentimental value.", or "I don't really want to sell that" you get people walking away and never coming back. In the case of this guy, like a lot of other commenters have said, I don't think he wanted to sell. He's just showing off his collection. He's gone to a lot of trouble to make this a showroom as well as a storeroom. I'm betting if you had just asked for some of his doubles or things he didn't seem to have much interest in, he would have sold or tried to ask for some kind of trade for something he wanted. Going after a whole Moon Knight run, when he obviously collects Moon Knight, and trying to talking him down on a slab of Hawkman #4 he has displayed. Bad move. I'm betting if you had gone for his extra New Mutants #98, he might have worked with you. Also, sometimes you have to "break the ice", as those guys on American Pickers say. Anytime I go to a multi-day convention, I try to find something on day one I really like from a seller, buy it with no argument, and then on the last day, if you've made a friend, they might hook you up with some deals. But on a new meet, you've got to be careful to not let the person think you're a rube trying to burn them. Especially if they don't need the money. This dude was obviously well off. When he said he might make a deal, he probably assumed you knew he didn't need the cash and would just ask for some duplicates. Might have been trying to establish a trade relationship. This guy had dough, but I'll offer advice on the people that don't, as well. Know who you're dealing with. If someone is just doing an estate sale and the government is going to catch the cash, go in there and get what you can for as low as you can. And if someone knows what they have but they just don't want it and want to make some cash to do other things with, it's all good. But beware of burning people that don't know what they've got. One of my neighbors used to have a card shop. He also collected comics when he was a kid and he and his son collected when his son was a kid. So, this guy is sitting on tons of Golden and Silver Age. Most of the Golden Age were westerns. It was what he liked. I used to love to just go through them to see all of the cool books I had little knowledge about so I could smarten up. But, while this guy knew baseball cards like the back of his hand, he had eased off of the comic pedal and wasn't up-to-date on the values. He would sell his son's Silver and Bronze Age stuff in the early 90's when the prices were kind of low. And for all he knew, they were still there. He hadn't noticed that huge blast-off in prices after the Marvel movies took off. I was in one day looking for some old western Ghost Rider books, the one thing he didn't really collect, and came on Jonah Hex first appearance in solid condition. I thought I would shoot my shot and ask him what he wanted, to see if we were in the same neighborhood. He tells me: "Ah, for you a dollar." I stop and say: "Man, this book is probably worth four or five hundred dollars in it's condition. You been checking the price guide?" Long story short, I tell him I can't take a deal like that and tell him where to go online to check out the prices on his books, hoping people haven't been taking him. A few weeks later, I go in just to hang out and he thanks me for telling him about the online price guides. Then he tells me: "Hey, I sold a copy of Brave and Bold #28. Wanna know how much I got?" My heart goes boom! I knew he had a bunch of the issues around it, but he didn't like superhero books so the only ones I saw that he had were some Viking Prince issues. Which are still worth some dough, but I'm not into Viking Prince myself. So I ask: "How much did you sell it for?" He sold it for a thousand bucks. Probably a 2.5-3.0. I'm like: "Dang, man, I would have given you more than that!" He was like: "Ah, it wasn't in the best shape and it made the guy happy." So, sometimes, you'll meet someone who knows that they have, but they'll still give you a good deal. You just have to be cool and not take them. They may hook you up just to be nice. This dude had plenty of money, he just liked to help people that were other collectors find stuff they might not get. I even try to follow that example and hook new collectors up with things they might not be able to get for next to nothing to give them a leg up and keep them in the hobby. This has turned into a term paper. In short, I think you two were just not on the same page. You felt misled because it seemed like he wanted to make a deal. And he probably felt misled because he just wanted to show off his stuff and maybe make some deals. It happens. Just be careful in dealing. A local collector I grew up with has made a horrible name for himself by being notoriously hard to deal with for other collectors. I think I'm the only person who will still deal with him. He lives by the price guide and has run off some good deals by being too caught up in it. I'll never forget this one time that this one guy who had started collecting with his kid tried to trade with this dude. His thing was he wanted bulk, just so he and his kid could read them. So, he was a 1-1 guy. Didn't care about value, just wanted an even number swap.This guy I knew told him to hit the road and told him to call me if that was the kind of crap he wanted to do. I said we could meet up. He brought a bunch of boxes of comics to my house and traded me a bunch of Bronze and Copper stuff for a bunch of brand new books. I offered to break out the price guide so he could see what he had and I could give him some more of the new stuff. He wouldn't have it. "No price guides. I don't care. I just want to trade like in the old days." I didn't get any big books...A Silver Age Avengers or two that were not keys and a bunch of late Bronze Age Thor and some Micronauts. But I got some good press from that guy. Pretty much anybody in the area will deal with me. The other guy, I'm about all he has other than stores. And some of them aren't too keen that he tries to haggle every time he goes. The message: Most people accept haggling, but if you low-ball someone in the know, it will bite you in the rear sooner or later. Nobody is going to sell you a Giant-Size X-Men #1 for ten dollars....And there not be consequences. Unless they're doing you a favor. Know who you're dealing with.

I actually had this happen to me more than once, he wants to sell at a premium, you pull out all the good hot/relevant stuff for him so he does not have to do the work/research and now he only has to focus in those books, it’s actually really smart but not cool

Nice collection but strange? When that was the title I was expecting Reform School Girl mixed in with 1970s Richie Rich, Golden Age Superman that was for some reason signed by Stan Lee with German language EC comics and a complete set of Fawcett Ibis comics, I was expecting pristine golden age books, not low grade silver and bronze and modern. There was very little in the collection that I don’t see all the time.

I’ve been in situations like this many times. Great collection but in the end they just won’t part with it, or they’ll want way above FMV which is a big no. Especially if you’re a private collector trying to sell an entire collection. These people are kind of a waste of time.

I bought Batman 227 and a bunch of other Neal Adams Batman ( mostly covers)..sometimes he did not do the interiors… back in the early 2000’s for $20 a piece…all in great condition…. FLEEEEXXXX on the GOOSE

I think, if you had made an offer for all the comics, he would have sold them. It seemed he wanted the books out of that room, and just wanted the rest of his stuff to stay put. I almost get a 'buyers regret' vibe from his collection.

My collection would most likely not make sense to a lot of younger collectors because, I do me. I have the blue chips to the modern books and some moderns are important just to me, they have a sentimental aspect that doesn’t universally apply. I.e. the recent Super Sons series I went very deep on because Damian & Jonathan are mirror images of my youngest two sons, that means I have a graded Super Sons 1 1 next to a graded JIM 83…it’s logical to me lol. Most guys who come in to buy comics get hypnotized and we end up chatting for hour’s which is fine by me, I want to sell & downsize now but I’m still passionate and love the hobby which means I’m in no hurry to sell. The interaction is sometimes worth more than the money, but I’ve found that the second time a guy comes in they are laser focused and the purchases happen. It’s a win win because I like to know where my treasures are going. Stay cool. Silver

He’s not your friend scoping out the competition you got 20 grand on you now he knows you’re working with pennies don’t fall for the long shot. hustled he wanted to check out your bankroll to see what you were working with if you don’t got $ $5000🎉 i’m just gonna tell you why you didn’t show the video because the guy probably was hostile towards you and he was trying to rough you up so like a boxing match letting you know he controls things . I’m just saying fake it tell you make it. If you look around the room and you don’t see the chump you’re the sucker. Hmm, I dont really think this is strange at all. Could be that you were coming at this situation from a resellers mindset/yes i know you have a great collection, are a collector BUT you also are a reseller, (lets keep it real) and he was coming at it from a pure collectors angle, lots of personal attachment to books etc, not being fully aware of current value and or not knowing how to wheel and deal. Concerning the slabs, could be just like alot of collectors, I myself have a lot of slabs, like them but its not a big deal, if i have a big book raw o well I just enjoy it as it is and take a peak inside to enjoy it occasionally. I have never sent a book in to be graded Gasp! yes there are a lot of collectors who dont care if there getting the maximum dollar for a book AND all the problems that go along with sending books in. Also keeping it real, it is a job in itself! most collectors are well aware of the issues that can arise when sending books out. PS ; I dont hate graded books, its just not the main goal or priority for some collectors, to each his own. Great vid, Sticky always keeping things entertaining, -Cheers

What a waste of time. It's nice to have an opportunity to look at someone else's books. But, if the expectation is there will be a transaction, then that's different. You didn't come to a museum to look at the artifacts.

Sounds like someone that only buys from eBay and whatnot live streams. I see some people buying like idiots, buying anything. Not even checking out the condition, trusting the eBay streamer who doesn’t know anything.

The "strangest" collection you've seen? That didn't seem strange to me at all. Someone with a big collection and money to spare for it, who bought new and old books he was interested in. Mixed knowledge of books, somewhat unorganized, not huge on slabbing to sell or even slabbing in general. Probably just had a phase or bought random slabs he liked. Sounds like a clickbait title, honestly. LOL. But seeing collections is always cool. Sorry you didn't actually get any books from it.
