First time I ever saw a "New Game Minus" feature. Interesting stuff 👍🏽

I feel like the most disturbing aspect of the twist is that the villain is a necessary part of the world and removing their influence is enough to render the world you saved uncanny and strange. I sense that the intent may not have been for it to have such disturbing implications, but it does fit with the idea that the protagonist and villain have a dialectical relationship with one another - chaos VS order (or on a more meta level, the game designer and the player). Having the villain be responsible for the mutated creatures you encountered on your journey, only to load the game after winning the conflict and find that they were effectively all subjected to a genocide, regardless of whether you spared "the good ones" during the quest is quite a bleak outcome that would have been at home in an Ultima game (though you'd probably only have been explicitly told what you did a couple of sequels down the line).

Great points! Thanks for sharing! And yeah on Ultima! 😄

Holy shit, I never actually tried loading my save after beating the game. I dunno if it's intended to have implications *that* dark, but wow, what a sucker-punch of a post-game just the same.

This game was great, a lot of first mechanics, yes a little late for the console release, but graphics aren't everything. Hydlide 1 was only terrible on the NES, the original was very inspirational and even inspired Zelda.

Awesome video! It's worth noting that the original PC-8801 version is available on the Switch right now, too, and it even has a full English script! Albeit broken English, but hey, it's neat for a Japan-exclusive release for Japan-exclusive hardware. (Fifth option on the main menu, select it once for English menus and a second time for full English text) It's got some gameplay differences too, definitely worth checking out.
@TieryasXu3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! And I did see that as I was researching this video and definitely have it on my radar. Do you know what the gameplay differences are by any chance?
@DeskoDev3 ай бұрын
@@TieryasXu Off the top of my head, you can't crouch in the PC-88 version, and the only bank in that version's permanently closed until it becomes the sound test in the postgame. Kaizack/Gayzac's fight is also a lot easier on PC88 since you don't need to take out the weak points. I think there's some smaller map differences and probably some more on top of that as well. From my understanding the most content-packed versions of the game are the PC-98 and Sharp X68000 versions, but neither of those have English text or translations unfortunately.

Calling Hydlide one of the worst games ever is unfair. When it came out in 1984 in Japan, it was among the very first ARPGs, and was hugely influential on the genre. The Legend of Zelda took a ton of inspiration from it, as well as Falcom's Ys series. The problem is that it took so long to come West that it was totally outdated by the time we got it. Otherwise, I never played this one. Sounds like it might be worth checking out. Thanks for the review!
@costby11053 ай бұрын
It should be noted that many aspects of game design was changing at a rapid pace back then, a game released a few years prior could easily be very dated. Early Famicom/NES games often fell a lot more dated that later Famicom/NES games.
@jasonblalock44293 ай бұрын
@@costby1105 Yeah, exactly. It's easy to forget that when the Famicom came out in 1983, its primary hardware goal was to play a good version of *Donkey Kong.*

Most positive Super Hydlide/Hydlide 3 video.
@KeiNova3 ай бұрын
The Hydlide everyone says is bad is actually called Hydlide Special. It's the Famicom/Nintendo port. The real Hydlide, and the one that was really good in Japan was released on the NEC PC-6001 and PC-8801. No one even had those systems here, and barely knew of them. Great video though. I love RPG content so bad, and you aren't flailing around swearing and blowing out your mic. So, I approve!

Thanks so much! I Great point on Hydlide. I do enjoy some of those reviews where people are swearing, lol, but I'm glad you approve of the RPG content here.

Interesting video. I didn't know about the opening completed save thing (or the lightsabre for that matter). I wonder if the bleakness was deliberate or just a result programming limitations.

I finished this game when I was 9 and the story really stuck with me. I never thought of the ending as sinister or dystopian. That's an interesting spin you put on it!
@TieryasXu3 ай бұрын
I think the intention was positive by the developers? If after the end and recreation of the universe, the NPCs said the same thing from before all that happened, that might have seemed odd too, ha ha.

I do not have the facility to tell you how much I use to rent Hylide for the NES. To this day I have no idea how to play it properly but I still love it. The fairy start up and dragon fire is engraved in my mind big time. Only played a bit of Super on my emulator though.
@TrueNeutralEvGenius3 ай бұрын
Yes, agreed, Hydlide is a strange game and takes a lot of effort and time to open up. I remember wondering killing tons of slimes and tree-like enemies in the 90s, and only later in 2010+ on emulator finished it. Very odd game design. What about Fatal Labyrinth, it's a good game, finished it in the 90s, and overall it's very important game for the genre dungeon crawler, one of the early one. Well done inventory and different items and effects. Was very good for that timeline.

Never played this game in my life, but this video has me dreading it (in a positive way, mind you). Though your interpretation of it is intriguing, I find myself wondering if the designers necessarily meant it to be a bummer, or if they just thought throwing in a "all the NPC's congratulate your victory" post-game mode was a 'reward' for their audience. Unless we hear from the devs I guess we'll never really know...
@TieryasXu3 ай бұрын
I'm thinking it probably was intended as a post-game reward, but the effect when I first came across it was very unnerving, ha ha.
I think I looked at this game a couple times at the rental store, but never tried it. The story seems pretty deep for the time, and actually kind of reminds me of some of the plot lines from the Xeno series. It would be interesting if this series were revived and remade in a 3D/modern style, similar to how Falcom is doing with their Trails in the Sky remake.
@TieryasXu3 ай бұрын
I'm looking forward to that Trails in the Sky remake!

Once you understand the game and are good with 80s computer styled RPGs it becomes pretty legit. If you hate western styled RPGs and some attempts at doing tabletop RPG things? It's not for you. At the time food, day ight, encumbrance, and morality systems were barely known of in the console world. Like it's only about a year since Dragon Quest came out in the US.
