I know he was mocked etc. by trolls and was seriously mentally ill, but clearly the fact he made this, on his own, from the ground up he was claraly skilled at programming. I mean making a Kernel, C Variant, JIT and some debugging isn't generally a single person job. Linux has thousands of people to do that

what? in almost 10 years I haven't seen a single instance of King Terry being mocked or trolled, sure people would mention here and there his illness and the issues it brought, the closest thing to mocking I've seen is dismissing the OS as "a bad clone of DOS", he was and still is regarded as one of (if not The) greatest programmers in history

The sad reality is genius and insanity are close bed fellows. A lot of people misunderstand what TempleOS is. In many ways this is a one man skyscraper in the form of a love letter to computer science and programming. Despite its obvious quirks, I don't think there's a serious coder out there who doesn't have ton of respect for what he was able to accomplish. I'm just thankful he shared it with all of us and it's not just buried on old hard drives that'll never the light of day again. I'm sure there are a number of mind blowing projects by brilliant, troubled people that will be forever lost.

I hope that one day we find a permanent cure for schizophrenia. Terry really was an extremely intelligent person with many thought provoking things to say. It's a shame that his lucid moments have gone under the radar for the most part, though.

“An idiot admires complexity, a genius admires simplicity, a physicist tries to make it simple, for an idiot anything the more complicated it is the more he will admire it, if you make something so clusterfucked he can't understand it he's gonna think you're a god cause you made it so complicated nobody can understand it. That's how they write journals in Academics, they try to make it so complicated people think you're a genius” ―Terry Davis, Creator of Temple OS

Temple OS is quite interesting. As is the programming language it uses, called Holy C. Iirc, you can actually embed 3D models directly into the Holy C source code and stuff like that. You can see this at around 6:58.

Yeah that blew my mind. I absolutely love when developers give the middle finger to conventional thinking. "Why can't I have assets rendered in the source code?" "Because we don't do that." "Well then I'm doing it."

You know, he made a physics simulation app for Windows, in the 9x era, which was just amazing. I could have been so happy with that app back in the 2000s, like seriously. I think he used a lot of the routines for the physics engine of said app throughout the entire TempleOS' games. But seriously, that app even comes with a language interpreter for custom behaviors of physics objects, just amazing.

Seeing these cases I sometimes ask myself if the profets of old weren't just schizophrenic people who got taken seriously.
@Xvladin2 ай бұрын
Probably not the real ones, like Jesus, the Buddha, etc. They have a coherent narrative and lessons that are constantly in their teachings. The ramblings of a genuine schizophrenic are significantly disjointed, and even if there are some threads or themes to follow, they're often contradicted and not genuinely useful or super well thought out. I could definitely see the archetype of the tribal shaman coming from schizoid thinking.

@vidal97472 ай бұрын
I think his paranoia and schizophrenia contributed to this. I am not saying he was perfect, but his conditions make me cut some slack. But I am happy you can separate the work from the author. My college recently moved the 100 years of quantum mechanics celebration to another year because Schrödinger was a PDF file. While he was horrible, his work was fantastic and is still teached everywhere.
