Whilst I still maintain that Theodoro in EU4 has one of the hardest starts, this Gothic Invasion has gotten off to an excellent start! So much for the least played nation in EU4! I personally think that it's one of the most interesting based on its location, but not having a mission tree isn't great. I will say that this shows the orthodox religion in EU4 to be OP - as well as one of the strangest things I've ever seen in EU4.

HRE mechanics are weird. So hear me out. There is an incident for the burgundian succession war. That incident triggers at a certain date between the emperor and usually its strongest rival. You were at war with the ottomans, with the emperor, and against their strongest rival. So the incident changed the war goal. But for some reasons, since you are not in the empire, or France was a cobelligerent, you ended up being on the receiving end. That's the only explanation for it. And if itcan be replicated, you found one of the strongest exploit in the game ! Props to you dude

So, what I imagine happened, is somehow, the burgundian succesion triggered while you were at war with the ottomans, and it triggered a succesion war between the Austrians (who inhereited it) and someone else. Now, this person was likely france, cause that is how thew event usually works, which, because france was already at war with Austria, overwrote the current war and changed the wargoal. Ive had something similar happen, where an event that triggers a war changes the wargoal of an ongoing war because of the event starting war between two powers already at war. I beleive this happened in an english campaign I had where the surrender of maine happened while I was already at war with france (it was weird and im not sure how it did, but it happened). But because austria wasnt the primary faction in the war, it gave the wargoal to you for some reason. It sounds strange but that is the best explanation I can think of

I've had that exact thing happen in a Milan-to-Italy game. I was the Emperor and attacking France with Burgundy as my ally in the war. The Burgundian Inheritance happened, forcing Burgundy out of the war, and starting the imperial incident. When the incident resolved with me keeping all of Burgundy, it changed from a conquest war to the Burgundian Succession war, with Burgundy still not being part of the war while their capital was the wargoal.

This is pretty crazy. In one of my games, I finished off France as Aragon and there was an option to vassalize France in the peace treaty for 0% war score. I was very confused but figured why not I’ll click it. Turns out, when I annexed France, my ally Burgundy formed France and became my vassal because of the treaty. It wasn’t a personal union so I started annexing them after 10 years although it took a while since they had 1500 development (They had half of France and half of Germany). So basically I had the #2 great power as a vassal.

I'm pretty sure the cause of the weirdness is the fact that, since Emperor, the Burgundian Succession War has been bizarrely hard coded, and if the correct event choices are picked will _always_ result in an _immediate_ succession war between Austria and France, even disregarding ongoing wars to find any way possible to force that situation. Since both were already at war (in your holy war), the event fired and simply subsumed _your_ war, but I guess they never thought to set it up to change war leaders and therefore you and the Ottomans remained in that role. However, the CB was still "succession war" and the target was still the Burgundian throne, so you as the war leader could still enforce the union - I would put my money on you also being able to _offer_ that union to the Ottomans and create a cursed Muslim-Catholic union. Florryworry had a related thing happen in a recent campaign wherein he vassalised Burgundy mid-inheritance, then the succession war was forced and his own vassal was in the war without him. Sure enough, France beat Austria and PU'd Burgundy out from under him despite him being at peace!

Events and missions usually doesn't (with PU casus belli or events like Iberian wedding) doesn't checks religion. For example, Iberian wedding checks if Castile and Aragon believes same religion and Muslims has to be out of Iberian peninsula. For example if Castile and Aragon are Tengri, Iberian wedding event will still trigger and union will be formed.

@@egric6384 You get a general with a base of, say, 4-8 pips. This base is increased by army tradition, and there are modifiers like "land leader fire +1" which will be added on to those pips. You're not guaranteed to get a good general with high tradition, it's just more likely.

My own Gothic Invasion run was me No-CBing Byz and then going after Venice to steal Venetia and join the HRE, and then slowly eating up the entire empire over the course of the game to get the achievment.

That was a strange glitch but I can top it. Austrian AI using pure luck, no exploits, to inherit England, France, Burgundy, Portugual, Castille/Aragon/Navarra/Naples, Hungary, Bohemia, and Poland before colonialism. I was playing Milan and after seeing that I just quit playing the game for about a year.

In an early patch game as England, I not only won a Personal Union over France, but the game handed me a PU over Portugal and became Emperor of the HRE.

Austria got the union via the HRE event, after a few months they also get a chance to fully inherit for free which triggers the same as a direct inheritance with no succession war, because Austria was at war with a rival when this triggered the game assumed it was a contested Succession with the Ottomans flipping the war goal

The crazy part is i could just dissolve the HRE as france without controlling vienna/being at war with austria. I just could do it without the normal requirments.

After seeing Florry force Vassalize Burgundy from Austria and then Austria give Burgundy to France this doesn't really surprise me... Anyways how it happened was pretty obvious. The game has absolutely no checks for France declaring war on Austria in the Burgundian succession so it literally over rid your war.

I believe another way of exploiting this would be to declare war on Hungary for succession, Austria get the PU through event or war before his own, and then you call Austria into the war, however the AI rarely joins succession wars so... You could also do it if you both have claimed the throne of a country.

I had Burgundian Succession event fire when I already had PU over Burgundy, Flanders, and Brabant. The event forced Flanders and Brabant into a liberation war. It also stole myPU over Burgundy and gave it to France who automatically inherited the throne like 4 years later

Happened to me a while back (1.29 i think) Basicly France get an event to fight Austria for burgundian inheritance but if they are already at war it change the war goal and since you are the war leader you can take burgundy.

Adding to the answer of * Konigsberg Marshal*: 1. Burgundy reached 1500 without triggering the succession, enabling it to choose the first option in the event _Imperial Entrance_ seen on 10:30 because Burgundy was not rivaling Austria. 2. In 1506 Burgundy's ruler dies and the _Burgundian Succession_ event chain gets triggered: 2.1. The option _The von Habsburg Prince will do nicely._ is automatically picked in the _Burgundian Succession_ event chain because Burgundy is now the member of the Empire. 3. The Emperor got _Burgundy Inherited_ event and got a personal union. France got at approximately same time the event _Emperor defiant_ which automatically put France and Austria into a succession war. What I don't understand here is *8+ months delay* between Burgundy being inherited by Austria and both of them entering into a succession war. That got to be a bug. Even the waiting for an event to expire after 3 months does not add up, and the AI probably does not do that. 4. Some war goal and casus belli shenanigans happen explained more thoroughly by *Konigsberg Marshal*. 5. *Profit???* Edit: fixed markdown.

One of my most favorite games was rebuilding the Roman Empire as Genoa- had France, Spain and Austria in PUs and we were unstoppable- toward the end I absorbed France but that turned out to be a bad decision, I learned a lot from that game. The Burgundian succession thing is a recent bug. I’ve seen people mention it in the forums. It happens when you’re in a war with burgundy and France (on opposite sides) and depending on the way the inheritance event goes (Burgundian PU and then France claims burgundy), the wars merge and you get the option to form a union over burgundy in the peace deal.

The succession fired, turning conquest of picardie or something into burgundian succesion war. I was then able to enforce PU on burgundy, even though they were in a PU under austria (my ally lol). My strangest thing in EU4 (1580 h): Friesland pu & integrated ferrara, Papal state vassalised friesland and took over its colonies. Strong protestant venice removed Papal State from Europe. Papal State got vassalised by Miskito. I hoped for Miskito to be vassalised by some Nahuatl nation and Pope being sacrificed (I even marked it as intresting) but maya was too strong in the region. It all happend while my Najd tried to solidify asian trade.

Burgundian Inheritance overrides any war between the holder of the Burgundian throne and France when they contest the union. As they were both in the war on opposite sides it updated the CB even though Austria wasn't the war leader. I've seen it happen to the AI before when Austria and France were fighting each other before the duke of Burgundy died and the CB changed, but this is my first time seeing it happen to a player.

Around 1650 I, as Prussia, had a pretty decent coalition against me, so I wanted to ally the Ottomans, who were ai the entire game, just in case. But when I when I looked at them, they had stopped Teching up around 1550, had no higher than miltary tech 13, and around 30 corruption. It was like the ai noticed at the same time we did, and within 50 years they were completely dismantled.

16:35 the war is already a succession war i think this happens when austria and france are fighting each other and the burgundian inheritance happens and france declares war via the event it happened to me once as i was playing as france, in a war with austria when the succesion happened, when i clicked on declare war in the event the war changed

i found it quite strange today playing as florence and allied to austria the emperor that i lost my alliance with them, and got some warning about being subjected to the emperor and then realised Bregenz, a one province HRE member was now the overlord of Austria...

I've had it once. Way I see it, when you have a war that involves France and the one that got the BI, when France declares war, it changes your war to Burgundian Succession and you can have it, no matter who got it, in the peace deal.

Hey the same thing happened to me when i was playing as Savoy. I was fighting burgundy and then the succession crisis happened while i was fighting them with austria so i was able to get a pu over burgundy.

TO RECREATE: If your ally Austria gets the Burgundian inheritance incident and PUs Burgundy you need to immediately call them into a war against any nation France will defend. With Austria as your ally and secondary faction in the war against enemy nation and France as a secondary participant you can change the war goal and "take" burgundy from Austria for free. **Austria and France should be rivals. **Austria must choose to PU burgundy during imperial incident. **Player, allied with Austria declares war on Provence (example nation that could be allied with France) to call in both powers on opposite sides almost immediately. **France must then, during that war, decide to challenge Austria for the Burgundian throne. If they decide to take the "leave it be" action, the war goal won't change. **As soon as war goal changes, the fight for Burgundy changes to the two war leaders and winner of the war could win the throne. France and Austria then become irrelevant and can peace out without repercussion. (The SS actually peaced France out of the "Burgundian Inheritance" war during this footage) **I cannot explain why it is zero war goal. It should be like 60 percent, I think, if you're defending a disputed throne. I think maybe it is bc it is this special succession. Like if it happened to you in an Austria game, it wouldn't cost anything to keep burgundy for them either bc it's an imperial incident. But otherwise and in any other succession war it would be 60% war score. This is a MAJOR exploit you've stumbled upon. Especially with a healthy burgundy. You should send this file and a bug report to paradox to have it patched. In the meantime, enjoy your super killer thick boy Theo AND burgundy.

I think I can beat that for weirdness. In my first ever England game, I lost the war of the roses intentionally to get the claimant as my monarch. As soon as he took over, I became the holy Roman emperor. In that game I also won the hundred years war and PUed France, so as a result I could add all the English and French land to the HRE which led to me revoking the privilegia super early. Needless to say, all later wars were super easy.

The weirdest thing that ever happened to me was with the extended timeline mod. I had been playing two byzantium runs, one where I reformed the empire as Nicea and one where I prevented Byzantium from losing Anatolia to the seljuk. In one of the runs I was allied to France and in the other I was rivaled to them. Long story short, I was helping my ally France in a war when I decided to hop over to the run where they were my rival. On the first month tick Leon (who had unified Iberia and was allied to France) got a pu and France challenged it. They then proceded to call me in to the war as if I was their ally. I accepted because it was so ridiculous and in the hopes of getting them as an ally, nope, they still hated me. This was all on iron man (because I wouldn't trust myself not to cheat otherwise) and with only the art of war dlc
