Hi Mike I am a great admirer of your work. After two years I plan to upgrade my current budget lathe to something more advanced. My shopping list include stratos fu 230 and record power coronet regent . On a paper two machines are similar. Behind decision for RP is their heritage, plenty of good reviews for stratos fewer reviews (mainly from germany) and strong opinions of some users in my country. So my question is how would you compare both lathes, how stratos behaves after few years and finally what would you go for? If that is not too many questions 😀
@MikeWaldt3 ай бұрын
Hi Macob, while Record Power are a long standing respected company, I have never had a lathe from them. Personally I cannot fault the Stratos and always recommend them. I had the FU 230 for a few years and it never missed a beat. I upgraded to the Stratos XL four and a half years ago, and again have had no issues. So in answer to your question ... it would be the Stratos 🙂

Hello Mike. I’m looking at obtaining one of these lathes, but I’d welcome your view on whether this needs a concrete floor to support its weight. I was going to ask if it was easier to change the belt on this Stratus having already watched your excellent vidio on how you changed it on your old Axminster AT1628VS, but of course you showed how it was a doodle on this lathe. One thing I would like to know, seeing as the inverter box is separate and seems to be able to be fixed in different positions, when the lathe was delivered was the head stock and motor - as well as the tail stock - separate from the bed enabling easier handling out of the box? I got the impression on the AT1628VS because the inverter is hidden under the head stock in the bed it came already attached to the bed making it a pain to man handle alone. You may have sold me on this, having long considered the Ax AT1628VS (or AT406WL as they call it today) I'm looking at this FU 230 with longing. Do you think it's the worth extra price Mike?

That's a wonderful lathe, Mike and very timely as I'm edging towards getting a new machine. If I may just emphasise the importance of zeroing any lathe before turning it off. A year ago I was friction polishing a lovely piece of elm at 2,000 rpm and just switched off the machine. The following day I put on an irregular-shaped piece and simply turned the lathe on forgetting it was still set at 2,000 rpm. Result: wood came off and broke my wrist. Good news was that it healed within 3 weeks and the Doc told me I had the healing properties of a teenager. However, I couldn't drive or turn for that period,

Hi Mike, Thank you for all your videos- essentially I have learnt how to turn from you remotely! Even so I am still a newbie. I have seen your excellent review of the FU230 - my question is the following . I have been given four trees and have an Axminster 1416. I want to use a bowl saver ( for the first time) and could probably get 100 or more bowls out of these trees if I did. It seems to me the Axminster 1416 doesn’t have the drop or the power for the woodcut bowl saver max 3 so I am looking for a new lathe. Are you still happy with the FU 230? Which bowl saving system do you use? Am I correct that I have to move up to a new lathe or could I push the 1416 and it might work and which lathe would you recommend if not the FU 230? Apologies for landing you with too many questions but you are my tutor! Many thanks and obviously love your work. Many thanks, Mark
@MikeWaldt5 жыл бұрын
Hi mark, and thank you for your kind words and support. I would highly recommend the FU230 as I have had nothing put superb performance from it from day one, and with the outboard facility I do not see me needing to change. I have to say that the Axminster I had was a good machine too, but not up to the standard of the FU. I have never used a bowlsaver, but the Woodcut seems to please those that have it. Hope this goes some way to answering your questions. Take care Mike

Great lathe, not to stagger off in another direction, but.. I have watch all your videos almost religiously and I have a question. I have noticed when I finish turning my pieces true and put a mortis or tenant in bottom and reverse it into the four jaw chuck it is no longer true. What am I doing incorrectly?
@MikeWaldt6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Very rarely do you get the piece to run perfectly on the tenon, but a little trick is to bring the tailstock live centre up to the piece with a small amount of pressure before you finally tighten the jaws on the tenon, and this minimises the out of "trueness". Hope this helps Cheers Mike

Hi Mike. I've just ordered the Axminster 1628 on the strength of your review a while ago. Having just watched this review I'm wondering whether or not to cancel and get the Stratos 370 instead. Is it worth the extra £600? The capacity/spec looks very similar.
@MikeWaldt6 жыл бұрын
Hi David, you mean the FU 230 I'm sure. In my opinion it's worth every penny of the extra .... but I reiterate ... it's my opinion :) Let me know what you decide. Don't forget to mention me to Simon if you decide on the Stratos ... then took get a free sanding arbor kit. Cheers Mike
@davidhorsman12616 жыл бұрын
Thanks for replying Mike, Yes, sorry I did mean the FU 230. I am a bit torn, but I don't think I can justify the extra £800 it would cost me on a like for like basis unless there was a significant improvement over the Axminster. the step up from my existing 1979 Record Power CL2 to the Axminster is going to be quite significant anyway so I will stick with it. If I had seen your review earlier I may have come to a different decision. Regards David

Hi Mike, sorry for the belated comments. I've been looking at at the Stratos- FU180 "Twister" for awhile now and which would replace my decrepid old APCT M900 . I do like the Stratos lathes, are they definately made in Germany and not just made in China and badged as Stratos? BTW, strange that on the Stratos XL lathe they do actually have a facing plate that guards the motor inlet vents from shavings/dust.......................To me personally, I really cannot understand why most lathes have their motor cooling vent backing onto the worst place for shavings/dust ingress.

I agree with your sentiments regarding the motor orientation, but have been assured that it has no negative impact as the unit is a completely sealed unit. Cheers Mike

Hi Mike, I hope you are well. I had hoped to have a chat with you at Harrogate this year, but unfortunately my health prevented me from visiting the show. I have a question for you regarding your decision process that resulted in you choosing the Stratos lathe. You mentioned in your video that you wished to have the ability to turn bigger pieces. But unless I have got this wrong, the increase in the distance between the bed of the lathe to centre is only marginally bigger than the Axminster AT406WL. Can I ask you if you ever considered upgrading to the bigger Axminster Trade AT508WL ? From a price point of view, I can’t imagine that the difference between the bigger Axminster and the stratos you purchased would be a great deal. I am considering an upgrade myself. I have a Hegner HDB200XL lathe at the moment. My shortlist has come down to the two lathes I have mentioned. I would be more than interested to know what your thinking processes were and why you eventually chose the stratos. Keep up the good work Mike, all. The very best, Yours Ricky
@MikeWaldt6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ricky, I didn't make Harrogate this year due to work commitments :( I had the pleasure of turning for three solid days on this lathe at last years Harrogate Show. I was looking to upgrade and space is a big consideration. The stratos offered a very easy and flexible solution for bigger outboard turning, and longer spindle work .. this is what sealed the deal for me personally. Hope this answers your query. Take care Mike

Greetings Mike and congrats on your new lathe. I chose the same model for myself some months ago and I am very happy with it, but it was a hard decision between this one and your previous AT1628 VS, because they are almost the same spec and size, including the outrigger for the larger turning diameter. Why exactly did you change? Was your old one already worn out?
@MikeWaldt6 жыл бұрын
Hi Andreas, my old machine was still working perfectly. I wanted to be able to turn bigger pieces and the Stratos allows you to do this from the side, not just the ends, like my old lathe. Also the bracket system allows easy and quick attachment and removal of the extension bed, plus some other refinements, which were not presemt on the Axminster. Cheers Mike

Hello Mike, It is indeed a sturdy looking piece of kit. Since you are now able to turn whoppers, you have of course increased expectations to match. So, do you think that you will have mastered a 36” long, thin stemmed goblet in time for Ukiws, or maybe just a 30” diameter hollow form? (I can't wait). Will Hope engineering supply the machine, your wonders to perform on? Am I stirring this up enough? Should I try harder. This could be a. new record. Just another thought, if you actually go for it and turn it under tension, will you be able to twang a tune afterwards, by winding the quill in and out, (maybe in willow). Well, anyway, Regards, Glenn. :-)

nice review, however considering the name of the product a disclosure statement at the outset would not go ary ( some people might take the letters F & U in the model name as an acronym for some swear words used in modern vernacular :) )

Hi Mike new subscriber been looking for reviews for this machine. Brilliant review at a steady pace love it Cheers Don Bye the way I noticed that you change your bench grinder from the record power rpbg8. Which model have you got? thank again

Hi, and thanks for subscribing. the stratos is a brilliant lathe in my humble opinion. I changed to the Axminster Trade slow speed grinder, as it has more "grunt" to turn those heavy CBNs of mine :) Cheers Mike
