I think I've wrote this to someone else in the comment section already but I can't let go of using self doubt as an advantage and what I wrote before was: In so many instances I let go of my self doubt so as to not increase my anxiety and just follow my path and use those same questions to "fuel" my quest for whatever it is that I'm going to tackle next. Ms Hopper, just want to say how refreshing it is to see a new post every time.. that its not about gear/stuff/random experiments but talking about what photography is, not media/content creation/photo geek stuff. Techniques, actual work, light, humanities, journalism, art medium. Another great one for sure.

Also off topic I read your comment on Karin's channel yesterday and completely understand your point but given that she's a personal friend of mine for whom I have a tremendous respect for and know the circumstances in which she acquired that camera I would like to ask if you could please to be a bit "kinder" next time with certain words you use. Not trying to feed into an argument here :) both me and her appreciate constructive criticism and I would also like to say that I appreciate you taking your time to watch my videos and I'm sure she does too with her channel. @@TatianaHopper Haha, oh well. I know making critical comments will end up being blacklisted (I know, I'm kidding).. Its in no way an argument because it was solely on my part to call out something in a critical manner, I'm aware of that. Of course I can't know the circumstances/background to every video.. so you guys have to be fair to understand that part too. Any way to say something in a non-politically correct/filtered way will always result in it sounder worse than it should (especially on text), for that part, its not my intention. There is no way negative feedback can sound nice.. unless it is insincere/dishonest right? When content creators say you are open to constructive criticism, I assume you mean it. The word is literally in the phrase - constructive Criticism. Its not constructive Praise, in this case. On an off topic note as we made clear, its really easy to be enabled in our social media age where only likes are shown and you literally cannot dislike anything on all the biggest media platforms, which means the slightest hint of a strong statement made simply results in some people getting defensive. So in defense, I was simply not putting a filter over my thoughts and delivery.. however if you followed the entire conversation you would have seen my inherent respect for the channel and her choice, and I spoke out in favour as loudly as I criticized. If you'd notice, I made the conscious and deliberate choice to share an encouragement here for a job well done (when I actually do feel so), as you've known that I have also left critical feedback in your past videos. I'm saying all this Only because I felt that I should not have to mince words if I truly did feel negatively about it. And yes, I'm referring to the negative judgement of being hypocritical.. I have already replied and clarified why. I understand making content online is hard, as it brings out some of the worst, I'm not trying to be one of those for the sake of it. Y'all run a channel on photography which is an artistic medium.. It's not like we're talking about accounting.. Don't you think it might be unreasonable for viewers to not be passionate about it? Since you guys are personal friends, you would also know that Karin publicly expressed her views on homophobia recently and made her stand against a viewer who questioned it right? I'm just saying, whoever has chosen to express their views openly, should equally not be able to dictate how someone else should express theirs (unless of course its an offensive move meant as a personal attack). If you can say whatever you want, but someone else can only reply you in a way that you won't feel hurt.. isn't that the concept of censorship? Of course T, we're just talking here it's nothing personal at all. (Believe it or not, I actually learnt quite a bit from Karin's pov and ALL of your past comments to me too) However, if you guys still do feel that this is considered too "unkind", I'm happy to disengage and no hard feelings, of course.

I've been feeling super worthless and super lost, as an artist and human, though I have been grinding hard on the craft. Recently I photographed the aftermath of a police shooting in a Portland park a few weeks back, and today the victims daughter reached out to me and thanked me for photographing the scene and resulting protests and what became a night of rioting against police violence. That gesture was huge for me, especially because I have been feeling so lost. It'll help me keep going another day for sure. Thank you for another amazing video!

Garry Winograd said something like the real problem is making a photograph that is more interesting than what you are photographing. Some people think if the moons don't align you shouldn't take the photo, but I say if something inside you says there is something there I say take the shot and don't worry about it. Great video as usual. Keep up the quality work.

Very good mini documentary of photographer Joel Meyerowitz. I've seen his Cape Light photo book of his beloved 'Cape Cod', and the powerful 'Aftermath'. Of his documenting the searchers and workers at Ground Zero , days after the 11/September/2001 attacks. To think Meyerowitz used an 8x10 film camera is astounding. I had to use an 4x5 view camera for college, it was difficult to carry, set up and photograph with. I can't imagine using an 8x10! A better photographer than I was.

Thanks T. The concept of self-doubt being more than just a self-blocking tool is an interesting one and I'm glad you let it come into a new light. As an autodidact, self-doubt has helped me to to be more critical/analytical of my own work. It doesn't stop me from jacking into an artist's mind space. There is a dynamic where I, the student asks a question of me, the teacher. I think (in my case) self-doubt may be the teacher who says, "you can do better," but doesn't say how.

A thing I've learned (like you said above) is to follow my head, to go where I am looking, not where I think I should be, and in stay in the process until I reach the thing. Oh! I think social media can cause too much self doubt . I posted what I still maintain was one of the best photos of my life the other day to my 1500 theoretical friends on Facebook It received 10 likes ( including my wife and parents ) it’s almost funny but it hurt On one hand it has hit my confidence on the other it has made me look at the photo and say “ sod them yes I’m bloody proud of that “ If and when I do take the best photo of my life do I keep it secret and just frame it on the wall or do I let other be the judge of that ?

I feel like looking at your work and filling fulfilled is imperative, of course the viewer should be taken in consideration but for years and years I took photos and wrote articles and put them online without ever having a greater response, but I still was very proud of what I did and that’s what fuels me and allows me to go, my confidence in my own capacity. When you take the photo of your life, I think you should share it but definitely don’t place importance on numbers and likes, as long as you, the artist / creator is content and you’re not promoting anything bad or hurting anyone, you’re just fine.

Joel Meyerowitz is a great photographer, but, on the philosophy side of things, I find him a little too much. I think he dresses up the meaning behind photography more then it needs to be. I’m a little more like Garry Winogrand when it comes to my philosophy behind photography. Still a great photographer though and still out there taking photos! Amazing.
