I've been a big band leader since 1981, my father since 1964. To whomever wrote the chart and to all the soloists. Fantastic. you make even 8ths swing in the best possible way. Anybody criticizing where on the beat continuum the solos should fall can go screw. The song was recorded in an era of quantization so making something like this sound human and groove as hard as it does is a accomplishment. And my crusty one foot in the grave 51 year old heart is warmed that there are such able young cats out there. Thanks for putting this in the world. PS im a lead trumpet guy born and raised so its not easy for me to say this.... TROMBONES you crushed! beautiful blend lads.

Not bad, in my opinion I would have preferred if the melodies were a little more laid back and behind the beat. The 1st trumpet to play it in the beginning was a little too straight for my taste. And the saxophone playing it articulated it a little too classically to me. The overall arrangement is great though! My bad - As a hip hop artist with jazz roots, I can be a real jazzhole about jazz interpretations sometimes
@sebskelly5 жыл бұрын
Cheers bro, glad you liked the arrangement. Thanks for the feedback, will bear in mind for next time :)
@rcbuggies575 жыл бұрын
100% agree. I play classical horn but i listen to jazz to just diversify my tastes and my immediate reaction is the flugel solo and all other vocal cover sections should've had some light falls and whatever the jazz term is for "loose" grace notes/turns. Would've far better represented the nature of the pop/jazz singing from gambino in the song.
